In our church calendar the Gospel reading for today relates the story of the wedding at Cana. It is a familiar story to Christians but its very familiarity can obscure one of its main points and that is, that God’s methods are unfamiliar to us. Through the prophet Isaiah the Lord told His people “ my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways My ways.” Nevertheless knowing a thing intellectually is very different from experiencing it. John Henry Newman said that experiencing god’s work within the world is, for humans, like waiting...
Look out, the “fixers” are coming. Top corporate chieftains and Wall Street gamblers want to tell Washington how to fix our national debt, so they’ve created a front group called “Fix the Debt” to push their agenda. Unfortunately, they’re using “fix” in the same way your veterinarian uses it — their core demand is for Washington to spay Social Security, castrate Medicare and geld Medicaid. Who’s behind this piece of crude surgery on the retirement and health programs that most Americans count on? Pete Peterson, for one. For years, this Wall St...
This past Sunday night, we faced a bit of a dilemma in our house. The English drawing room, cucumber sandwich and Earl Grey tea sipping drama, “Downton Abbey,” was scheduled to return for its third season, while at the same time, on another channel, was the dirty, dumb hillbilly reality show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo!” Halloween special. My wife was torn. I did not have a dog in this hunt. My wife controls the remote, so for the most part we watch TV shows where women try on wedding dresses, couples go apartment shopping and housewi...
These stories from the past first appeared in The Sidney Telegraph. Contractor Goodhand will arrive as soon as the stairs are here and will not be long after that in completing the building. C. M. With every new year comes a flood of New Year’s resolutions. Some of these resolutions involve promises to become healthier and to attend the gym more. At the Cheyenne County Community Center 11 workout classes are offered for those who want to take their personal workout to the next level. One of those classes is step aerobics. The class is held every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the center and Carla Orr, the class instructor, encourages members of the community to join the class at any time. L...
WASHINGTON — Supporters of President Barack Obama’s gun-control proposals are planning a methodical, state-by-state campaign to try to persuade key lawmakers that it’s in their political interest to back his sweeping effort to crack down on firearms and ammunition sales and expand criminal background checks. To succeed will require overturning two decades of conventional wisdom that gun control is bad politics. The National Rifle Association is confident that argument won’t sell. But with polls showing majorities supporting new gun laws a...
OMAHA (AP) — An Omaha woman serving a life sentence for strangling her landlord has died in prison. The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York says Monique Lee died Friday morning. The cause of death has not been determined. Officials say Lee collapsed in the center’s medical unit after complaining last night that she did not feel well. Lee was convicted in August of first-degree murder in the death of Karen Jenkins. Prosecutors say Lee used a vacuum cleaner cord to kill Jenkins, who had evicted Lee. Jenkins’ body was found near an ab...
LINCOLN (AP) — A Nebraska man must register as a sex offender despite never being convicted of a sex crime, the Nebraska Supreme Court said Friday in upholding a lower court’s ruling. The state’s high court asked the Buffalo County District Court in January 2012 to review all evidence from a hearing to decide whether 33-year-old Chad Norman’s crime involved sexual contact with his ex-girlfriend’s 11-year-old son. The high court said the district court found clear and convincing evidence that Norman’s crime involved sexual contact with the bo...
LINCOLN (AP) — Farmers, manufacturers and shipping companies could lose millions of dollars’ worth of sales tax breaks under plans announced Friday by Gov. Dave Heineman, but their income tax burden would also vanish. The Republican governor unveiled two possible tax-reform packages, both of which would eliminate corporate income taxes and make up the lost revenue by ending the state sales-tax exemptions. But the two measures differ in both their scope and who would benefit. Heineman said he submitted both to initiate a public discussion wit...
The first business addressed by the South Platte Natural Resources District at its first meeting of 2013 was the administration of oaths of office to four board members re-elected in November. Directors taking their oaths were Bill Halligan, representing Subdistrict 1; Tim Maas, Subdistrict 3; Keith Rexroth, Subdistrict 5; and Larry Rutt, Subdistrict 7. The board also elected its leaders, choosing to retain Rexroth as board chair. Tom Biggs, representative for Subdistrict 6, remains vice-chair, and Paul Hutchison, Subdistrict 4, is secretary....
As the Nebraska State Legislature returned to session this January there were many proposed bills attracting statewide attention. The proposed tax relief bill is one of them. However, there are some bills being proposed that are less known to the public, such as one dealing with the question of where tax dollars for schools are being spent. Senator Jeremy Nordquist introduced the Education Compensation Transparency Act, LB 274, to the legislature this Wednesday. According to a press release by Nordquist, the proposed bill “will require full d...
CHICAGO (AP) — Lance Armstrong finally cracked. Not while expressing deep remorse or regrets, though there was plenty of that in Friday night’s second part of Armstrong’s interview with Oprah Winfrey. It wasn’t over the $75 million in sponsorship deals that evaporated over the course of two days, or having to walk away from the Livestrong cancer charity he founded and called his “sixth child.” It wasn’t even about his lifetime ban from competition, though he said that was more than he deser...
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Three days after news broke about his fake dead girlfriend, Manti Te’o is still mum and Notre Dame has urged the star linebacker to speak up — and soon. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the school has encouraged the Heisman Trophy finalist to talk publicly about a hoax that turned the feel-good story of the college football season into one of the most bizarre in memory. During the taping of his weekly radio show, posted online Friday, Swarbrick called on Te’o to explain exactly how he was duped into an online...
BRIDGEPORT – Sarah Mahr scored 14 first-half points, and Sidney High School’s girls basketball team used its depth and pressure to smother host Bridgeport, 65-37, Friday night. “Mahr’s our little energizer,” SHS coach Tyler Shaw said. “She comes in and runs the floor and provides us with some solid defense. Tonight, she was able to score for us.” SHS (11-3) wore down the Lady Bulldogs (5-8) in waves: Shaw was constantly switching up his 10-player rotation – five at a time - and while the hosts t...
BRIDGEPORT – Paxton Ehler carried the Sidney High School boys basketball team early, and it was enough for the Red Raiders to hang on for a 56-43 road victory Friday night. Ehler scored a game-high 22 points, including his team’s first 13 points. But it was a sequence of three consecutive 3-pointers from the junior that turned the tide for good after the Bulldogs had taken an 8-7 lead. “Paxton came out hot for us,” SHS coach Erik Kohl said. “We knew Bridgeport would come out pumped up for this g...
