  • Holding Criminal Illegal Aliens Accountable

    Pete Ricketts, U.S. Senator Nebraska|Jan 16, 2025

The federal government has a fundamental responsibility to secure our borders. President Biden utterly failed to do that. Criminal illegal aliens have been allowed to enter and roam our country. Americans like Laken Riley died as a result. This week, I voted to advance legislation I co-lead to hold criminal illegal aliens accountable. I'm going to keep fighting until we secure our border. President Biden's open border policies created a national security, humanitarian, and drug catastrophe. CBP...

  • The Loose Thread

Bryan Golden, American Writer and Columnist|Jan 16, 2025

Pull on a loose thread dangling from a carpet and the entire carpet can unravel. Some seemingly small things in life can have the same effect. Left untended they can lead to much greater consequences than imagined. Human tendency is to ignore small things in order to give our attention to larger issues that have already reached the crisis stage. These emergency situations scream for attention. The minor ones, the loose threads, fall by the wayside. Since they carry no immediate consequences, we...

  • Quotes on the Ancient Romans

    William H. Benson, Columnist|Jan 16, 2025

Recognizable quotes on the ancient Romans: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." "All roads lead to Rome." "Rome was not built in a day." Caesar Augustus boasted, "I found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble." The poet Virgil observed, "So vast a toil it was to found the State of Rome." In ancient times, the city of Rome astonished everyone. The Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus, the Forum, the Temple of Vespasian, the Palace of the Caesars on the Palatine, the tens of...

'To the victor goes the spoils'. 'Victor' is a word that denotes God's Character. "Before honor is humility." Proverbs 15:33 First recorded in Genesis 12. Abram is greeted by Melchizedek with wine and bread – communion. Abram gives tithes of all. Notice! he doesn't accept anything from the rogue king lest that king say he had made Abram rich. • Is buying a home always the right move?

    Jan 16, 2025

It’s widely thought that home ownership is a key to building wealth — but is it? And should you consistently make sacrifices to buy your own home? Let’s start with the first question: Is owning a home essential to building wealth? It would probably be more accurate to say that home ownership can be helpful in building wealth. Building home equity — essentially, the difference between the size of your home’s value and what you still owe — is certainly valuable. Plus, the bigger your equity, the less you might have to take out in a new mortgag...

  • Partnership in the Gospel

    Jan 16, 2025

As I sit and write this I am currently on a trip with some men from our local church in the state of Louisiana, visiting with a number of partner churches that have a heart to see Jesus made non-ignorable in Sidney and surrounding rural areas. We traveled here because in partnership in 2025, we will be bringing a men’s and women’s retreat to Sidney. A time of ministry to see Christ exalted and lives changed. I am so very thankful for friendships and partnerships in the gospel. If it wasn’t for the many partners around the U.S., we would...

  • Verbal Leases: What happens when someone dies?

    Jan 16, 2025

By Jessica Groskopf, Nebraska Extension ag economist At a recent farmland leasing workshop, the question was raised, "I am a landlord with a handshake lease agreement. What happens if I die?" At the time, I gave the simple answer, "The new owners of the land will be subject to the lease." Although this is technically correct, the situation is more nuanced than it appears. Depending on how the land is owned and passed on, there may be a period of uncertainty regarding who is responsible for the...

They propose that new federal investments in agriculture wind up in the hands of farmers in rural communities. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen said he is cautiously optimistic about how rural policy will look in the new administration, but said it will start with fair competition in the agriculture markets. "The markets are not...

  • Benish Signs With Doane University Multi-Sport Star Signs with Tigers for Basketbal

    Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Jan 16, 2025

DALTON--It was a time of celebration and some tears as Leyton senior Zaili Benish signed a letter of commitment to attend Doane University and to play for the Lady Tigers Basketball team. Benish is a multi-sport standout, excellent in volleyball, basketball, and Track & Field. However, she is going to focus athletically on basketball at Doane, which seems appropriate as she hit nine three-point shots in the previous night's win over Paxton. A big turnout was on hand for the signing, with Benish...

  • Lady Raiders Start New Year with Four Wins

    Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Jan 16, 2025

SIDNEY--2024 didn't have the best ending for Sidney's Lady Raider Basketball team as the girls dropped a hard-fought game against Cheyenne East in overtime on December 21. But a new year brought some much-needed confidence, and the girls have run through their initial 2025 schedule with four straight wins. The girls started the new year on January 3, when they traveled to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Alliance. This contest wasn't even close as the Lady Raider turned an early 19-to-0 run into a...

  • Warriors Open New Year with Losses

    Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Jan 16, 2025

DALTON--The Leyton Warrior Boys Basketball team is struggling for wins, despite the talent they have on the court. The team will look dominating one moment, and then can’t get out of its own way the next. With great athletes like Alec Watchorn and a genuine big-man in the center with Kaleb Miller, it’s surprising that this team only has two wins. However, this is a team that looks like it can “click” at any moment and go on a significant winning streak. Don’t rule out the Warriors just yet-...

  • Lady Warriors Keep Rolling Through Competition

    Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Jan 16, 2025

DALTON--Leyton’s Lady Warrior Basketball team had a strong opening to the season, with competitors offering little resistance to the Lady Warrior machine that plays fast, scores in every way possible, and plays shut-down defense. Head Coach Jed Benish was a little concerned going into the January 9 match-up against Paxton, as the Lady Warriors had a significant layoff over the holidays, and lack of players make it difficult for the girls to scrimmage against each other. Although the Lady T...

  • Coyotes Tame Tigers; Fall to Blue Knights

    Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Jan 16, 2025

POTTER--The Potter-Dix Coyote Boy’s Basketball team is another team in the panhandle that should have a better record this far in the season. Loaded with talent like junior Landon Gasseling and junior Dylan Tabor, this is another team that just needs to get settled and play together better. They have the athletes and the coaching is there, it just seems that a combination of bad luck, bad timing on their schedule, and a few losses that could and should have been wins, have kept the Coyotes f...

  • Lady Coyote's Skid Continues

    Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Jan 16, 2025

POTTER--The Lady Coyotes have struggled so far this year with only two wins, and they came against bottom-ranked teams Creek Valley and Banner County. With losses to Bayard and South Platte to start the year, the upcoming schedule had the Lady Coyotes traveling to Kimball on Tuesday in the hopes of grabbing a win against the 1-and-9 Kimball Lady Longhorns. If not, the girls will have to wait January 18 for a win when they take on the 5-and-5 Hay Springs Lady Hawks. They do have a game before...
