Discussions about the pros and cons of annexing portions of land adjacent to the city were discussed at city council and planning commission meetings last month. The state’s annexation roles have changed in the past five years, making it a more intensive process than in the past. Annexation simply means incorporating ground currently adjacent to Sidney into the city limits. Some areas outside the city limit are under the city’s two mile zoning inf...

    Dave Faries|Jan 13, 2014

When TeamMates mentor Rhonda Douglas shoots hoops with Allie, a Sidney middle school student, the outcome is predictable. "Allie usually wins," Douglas admits. Fortunately for the mentor's self-esteem, the pair only occasionally take to the court. For the most part they meet for lunch, read books or look up information on the Internet. • No Till Notes: 'Opportunity'

    Mark Watson - Resources Conservationist|Jan 13, 2014

As most of you are probably aware, I’m pretty excited about the opportunities yellow field peas provide for producers here in western Nebraska and around our region. We have been growing yellow field peas successfully on our farm for several years now and I’m convinced the field peas will prove to be a profitable crop for producers in this area. The best opportunities for field peas are in our dry land cropping systems and limited irrigation crop rotations. There are many agronomic benefits to including a legume in our cropping rotations. Stephen McKay|Jan 13, 2014

Despite holding an 8-point lead at halftime, Sidney was forced to make a fourth quarter comeback attempt that just fell short against the McCook Bison on Saturday night. For the Raiders (6-5, 4-1) the 54-52 loss at McCook (7-6, 2-0) was just their first district loss of the season. The Raiders also completed a three-game stretch in as many days in which they went 1-2. But for a few breaks, they could have gone 3-0 as they lost two games by a combined 3 points. On Friday night the Kimball...

  • Porter sets school record as Sidney downs Bulldogs

    Stephen McKay|Jan 13, 2014

Fueled by a 12-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters, the Raiders turned back a strong Gering Bulldogs squad 39-31 Friday night at the Cabela's Athletic Facility. Though the season has not yet reached its halfway point, Sidney's Abbi Porter set a new standard for blocks in a season, registering her 47th. During the 2010-11 campaign Majorie Keeton set the old mark of 46. Earlier this season Porter broke Keeton's single-game record by blocking 8. "It feels pretty good to get the...

  • Coyotes win wild one at South Platte

    Dave Faries|Jan 13, 2014

After building up a 5 point halftime lead, Potter-Dix hung on to claim a 36-35 win at South Platte on Saturday. But the outcome was hardly certain in the game’s waning moments. The home side took a 35-34 lead with 1:22 remaining and clung to the narrow advantage for almost a minute. With just over 30 seconds on the clock, Taylor Juelfs forced her way into the paint, issued a quick turn and drained a critical jumper. “That’s the only move I’ve got,” Juelfs said of the pivot that opened the shot. Forced to foul, South Platte sent Juelfs to the li...

  • Potter-Dix holds off Knights

    Dave Faries|Jan 13, 2014

The Coyotes’ 66-56 road win over South Platte on Saturday was not as cushy as the score might indicate. Potter-Dix jumped out to a 19-12 lead at the end of the first period and extended it to 36-22 at the half, thanks largely to on target shooting by Tyler Magninie, Bryant Knigge and big Trevor Harms. But, as Knigge pointed out, “once we’d get a comfortable lead, we’d get too comfortable.” South Platte came roaring out of the break. They slapped the Coyotes with an 11-3 run to reel the gap back within reach at 41-34. The Knights finished...
