The Sidney Red Raider football team couldn't have gotten off to a stronger start to the 2014 season than its 48-0 drubbing of the Chadron Cardinals last week at home. But week two figures to be a bit tougher for the Red Raiders. They'll square off tonight against the Adams Central Patriots at Weymouth Field at 7 p.m. Adams Central is coming off a 34-7 home whipping at the hands of Grand Island Northwest. But make no mistake – this team is significantly better than Chadron, with more impact p...
Let’s be real here for a moment. Michael Sam, who is now the first openly gay player ever to play in the National Football League, fell to the seventh round and the 249th overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft in May for a reason. Don’t let anyone try to tell you that his draft position accurately reflected his ability as a football player compared to other draftees. Sure, he’s only 6-foot, 2-inches and weighs just 261 pounds. That’s probably too small to be an effective defensive end and although he definitely has the size to be a sturdy...
The Sidney High Lady Raider volleyball team will make the 123-mile drive on I-80 East to begin its season with a triangular match against North Platte and Ogallala on Thursday at North Platte High School. Sidney hasn't beaten either North Platte or Ogallala in any of the three seasons head coach Sarah Wilson has been on the Lady Raider sideline. North Platte and Ogallala combined for a record of 54-18 last season. As the new season is about to get underway, Wilson is hoping to change that. But...

Senior quarterback Lane Harvey threw for two touchdowns, while Chance Anglin piled up 70 rushing yards, a touchdown and also intercepted a pass, as the Sidney Red Raiders walloped the Chadron Cardinals 48-0 in both teams' season opener Friday night at Weymouth Field. By the numbers, Sidney played about as close to a perfect game as a high school team could. Its defense was lights out from Chadron's opening snap and the Cardinals managed only 51 yards of total offense on the night. Sidney head co...
The Sidney High School girl's golf team once again performed well on its home course Friday morning at the conference tournament. Just as they did on last Tuesday, the Red Raiders placed third out of six teams. Head coach Dani Kuchar saw a noticeable improvement from her team and was pleased with its showing. "Overall, I thought as a team we came out aggressive and did well," Kuchar said. "Almost each varsity girl dropped their score a few shots from Tuesday. We were right where I wanted us to...

The Colorado Rockies still have 30 games left to play this season. But with a dismal 53-79 record – hey, it’s still better than my Texas Rangers’ record so Rickies’ fans pat yourselves on the back – the team might start thinking about its plan of attack this offseason. Teams can begin signing free agents 10 days after the World Series concludes. The time frame between then and the start of spring training in February will be far more important to the Rockies than anything that transpired over this sorry season. The roster could be in serious fl...

Entering into her final year in the Sidney volleyball program, senior middle blocker Savanna Rosenbaum has had plenty of time to watch and learn from a long line of talented and charismatic players who have gone before her. Now it's her turn to take the reins and try to lead Sidney to glory this season. "I've had a really good opportunity to suit up for varsity all four years of my high school career," Rosenbaum said. "I've seen how past leaders have done and I'm hoping we can take the team and...
More and more in today’s Major League Baseball, starting pitchers are suffering the consequences of overuse and extended periods of fatigue. The game has evolved so much from the early 20th century days of the two- or three-man rotations. One probably would have seen a complete game from the legendary Cy Young listed in every other day’s box score. A fan reading the July 3, 1962, edition of just about any paper in Milwaukee and San Francisco – heck, probably all over the nation – might remember seeing a “16” under the Giants’ Juan Marichal...

The United States men’s national basketball team’s FIBA roster is getting closer to finalization and the squad will play its first exhibition game against Brazil at the United Center in Chicago on August 16. The U.S will also face off against the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico with both games under the world-famous lights of Madison Square Garden in New York. There are still four cuts to go to get down to 12 players and these exhibition games will go a long way towards deciding which players will and will not be representing the Stars and...
Sophomore wide receiver Alex Linneman will be taking on a much larger role with the Sidney Red Raider football team this season. The passing game figures to be a more potent weapon this year, so Linneman will get every opportunity to continue to shine with the same brightness that impressed his coaches so much in fall camp. "Last year I was just watching the games and now I'm a part of it and on the field," Linneman said. Linneman may only be a sophomore, but that doesn't mean he's a step...
