Sidney’s Raine M. Gartner and Chappell’s Jillian Kepler have both received college scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year. Gartner’s award is to Missouri State University and came as part of the Midwest Student Exchange Program. Students were selected based on their ACT scores, GPA, standing in graduating class and leadership shown in community and school activities. Kepler received the F and E Richards Memorial scholarship to Chadron State College for $1,000. She is a senior at CSC studying elementary education.... Full story
The City of Sidney will be closed on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day. All city departments will be closed including the landfill and the library. The Dial-a-ride bus and Stage Line bus will not be running. The Solid Waste Department will be collecting Monday’s trash on Tuesday and Tuesday’s trash on Wednesday. The Sidney Sun-Telegraph offices will also be closed on Monday and no edition will be printed that day. The newspaper offices will reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m.... Full story
Court Appointed Special Advocates was the recipient of the March "Dress Down Day" funds. Cheyenne County CASA is a private, nonprofit volunteer organization that assist abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system. Peetz Cub Scout Pack #36 held its Blue and Gold Awards ceremony on last week at the Peetz Community Church. An "Outing in Scouting" was the theme for the night as the scouts helped construct a camping scene. The Chad Nienhueser Memorial Scholarship is given to area high school students who will pursue a college education and have demonstrated leadership skills. Chad was a Sidney native majoring in civin engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City. This year's scholarship goes to Raine Gartner, Tanner Nienhueser and Joacob Peterson, all graduating seniors at Sidney High School. GERING – The Scotts Bluff National Monument will expand hours for the summer beginning this Saturday. To better serve visitors, the summer hours at the monument will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Summit Road will be open for uphill traffic from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and the grounds will be open sunrise to sunset. Creek Valley Storm golfer Brett Godfrey carded an 86 – his best score of the season – at the Oregon Trail Golf Course in Sutherland to qualify for the state tournament as an individual. The team struggled to a ninth-place finish at the Class D-5 District tournament on Monday. At its monthly meeting, the South Platte Natural Resources District board of directors received an analysis review of the Western Water Use Management Model, commissioned to aid in determining the effects of actions on aquifers within the District. The review was the second seen by the directors, who saw initial modeling results at a special meeting at the end of April. The Peetz Bulldogs track teams concluded their season at the State Track and Field Championships at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood, Colo., on Saturday. The Bulldogs qualified three athletes for individual events and five relay teams. Table of Grace Food Pantry in Sidney has received a $2,000 grant to help meet the hunger needs of lower-income residents in Cheyenne, Garden and Deuel counties. The grant is provided through Farm Credit Services of America’s “Working Here Fund.” The Table of Grace Food Pantry provides food to residents of all ages within its 35-mile service area.
