AMES, Iowa – Chappell’s McKenzie Steger was one of 4,345 students who received degrees at Iowa State’s spring commencement. Locals Cody McKay of Leyton High and Jill Behrends of Creek Valley High will represent the local area in the Mid Plains Area All-Star games will be held June 5, at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium in North Platte. The girls game is set to begin at 6 p.m. CDT with the boys game to follow about 7:30. The Sidney senior American Legion team struggled through its first two games at the Gering Tournament over the weekend before salvaging the final game against Hershland. After winning the finale, Sidney finished the tournament in fifth among the six teams entered. Meanwhile, the juniors split a doubleheader with Ogallala on Saturday in which they played the first game with a lineup made up primarily of Sidney Babe Ruth players. Both Sidney High School Red Raiders boys’ and girls’ track teams finished a successful season as the girls tied with Scottsbluff for the District B-6 championship while the boys won a state title for the first time since 1970. Two-thirds (66 percent) of Americans still don’t know what a 529 plan is, according to the annual 529 Plan Awareness Survey from financial services firm Edward Jones. In its fourth year monitoring college savings awareness, the survey found that only 34 percent of Americans could correctly identify a 529 plan as a college savings tool from among four potential options, up slightly from 30 percent in 2014 but down compared to the inaugural 2012 survey (37 percent). After twice being rained out of their home opener last weekend, the Sidney American Legion program opened up its 2015 campaign in Gordon with a junior-senior doubleheader sweep over the Regulators. The Juniors took the field in the opener and won by the count of 14-4 while the seniors completed the sweep with a 19-3 victory. Both contests went four innings because of the mercy rule. Average retail gasoline prices in Nebraska have risen 3.9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.59 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 1,150 gas outlets in Nebraska. Sidney’s Raine M. Gartner and Chappell’s Jillian Kepler have both received college scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year. Gartner’s award is to Missouri State University and came as part of the Midwest Student Exchange Program. Students were selected based on their ACT scores, GPA, standing in graduating class and leadership shown in community and school activities.
