  • Runza to hold 13th Annual Great Books for Great Kids fundraiser

    Runza Restaurants will conduct its 13th annual Great Books for Great Kids fundraiser on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The money will benefit local libraries, schools and literacy organizations and be used to purchase children’s books. Last year, more than $42,000 was raised to benefit children in communities with Runza locations, and in the past 10 years, more than $361,000 has been donated.     The John Henry Hinrichs farm in Sidney recently received an award from the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation and the Nebraska Farm Bureau that honors families with 100 years of farm ownership. The Hinrichs' farm consists of 160 acres and was originally acquired on June 27, 1900.     Sidney High School will hold its annual Gatorade scrimmages on Friday, Aug. 27. The evening begins with the Lady Raiders’ volleyball team taking to the Cabela’s Athletic Facility court at 5:30 p.m. After volleyball, the action will move outside to Weymouth Field where the Raiders’ football squad will take to the gridiron for a 7 p.m. start.     Average retail gasoline prices in Nebraska have risen 8.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.70 per gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 1,150 gas outlets in Nebraska.     The driver of a tractor-trailer died Saturday morning after a single-vehicle accident off I-80 east of Sidney.     Bridge work is scheduled to begin on L-17B – known as the Potter Link – on Aug. 17, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads.   • Apparent fight in car leads to death of Sidney man in Wyoming crash

    A single-vehicle crash in Wyoming last week resulted in the death of 34-year-old Sidney resident Daniel T. Poole. The crash occurred on July 29 at about 10:35 p.m. on Interstate 25 approximately seven miles south of Douglas, Wyo. Poole was the front-seat passenger in a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by his wife, 28-year-old Brittany Poole.
