A man who shot and killed a Sidney woman three years ago will be sentenced next month in Cheyenne County District Court on his first-degree murder conviction. Larry Martinez was convicted in March 2014 in the murder of Mandy Kershman. The first actual "museum" in Lodgepole was established and organized in 1959 by Mrs. Fern Lindley, a Girl Scout leader, and her troops. It was held in the First State Bank on Old Settlers weekend. The young Creek Valley Storm (0-1) struggled all night against a powerful Sedgwick County (Colo.) team as it fell 94-8 in Chappell. The Nebraska Rural Electric Association's Job Training and Safety Coordinator Bob Cooper, along with the Wheat Belt Public Power District, held a dedication ceremony in memory of Don Winkelman on Thursday at Wheat Belt's linemen training field north of Sidney. Winkelman was an integral part of Wheat Belt's team for more than 42 years. He retired as operations manager in July 2003. He enjoyed his retirement until his passing on Oct. 31, 2011. On Tuesday, all 81 Runza Restaurants in Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Kansas donated 15 percent of sales to purchase books for libraries, schools and school foundations in communities with a Runza location. Average retail gasoline prices in Nebraska have fallen 2.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.69 per gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 1,150 gas outlets in Nebraska. InterContinental Hotels Group has signed a management agreement with Sidney Hospitality to build an 82-room, four-story Holiday Inn Express in Sidney. A hearing has been set for Sept. 15 by the South Platte Natural Resources District to hear public testimony for the proposed irrigation allocations. The SPNRD board took action during its meeting earlier this month to set preliminary numbers for each subarea in the district for the next allocation period that runs from 2016 through 2018. Grain dealers and producers should be aware that changes to the Grain Dealer Act become effective Aug. 30. In May, the Legislature passed LB 183 modifying certain portions of the act. With the effective date just weeks away, the Nebraska Public Service Commission wants those affected to be prepared.
