    The Nebraska State Patrol will be conducting high visibility enforcement efforts over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday in an effort to crack down on impaired driving and reduce the potential for alcohol related crashes. Troopers and communication specialists for the Nebraska State Patrol will be putting in overtime hours beginning Thursday, March 13 through Monday, March 17.   • Local grad sets UNK record in 800 meters

    Sidney graduate Kaitlyn Wells, junior at University of Nebraska-Kearney, broke the meet record at the Concordia Indoor Invitational on Feb. 14 in the 800 meter run, setting a new mark of 2.18:58. She is also a member of the 4 X 400 relay team which broke the meet record with 3.55:64. On March 2 at the MIAA Conference Championships in Joplin, Mo., the 4x4 relay team placed second with a time of 3:53:31.     The birds of the southwestern Panhandle of Nebraska will be highlighted during a two-month series of Watchable Wildlife Tours sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory and the Kimball County Tourism Department. The series, titled “For the Birds,” will run March 15-May 15. All tours will depart from the High Point Welcome Center at exit 20 along Interstate 80.     Two Sidney High School graduates were place winners for the Chadron State College track and field team last weekend at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Adams State at Alamosa, Colo. Senior Brandon Segelke was second in the 200-meter dash in 22.18 seconds and sophomore Barrett Browne was sixth in the long jump at 22-5 ¾ (three-fourths if the fraction doesn't come through).     The Cheyenne County Community Center is taking Youth Soccer registrations until Mar. 10. Anyone signing up after that date will be put on a waiting list. The cost of signing up is $25 plus an additional $30 for uniforms. Uniforms include a reversable jersey and red and blue socks if needed. The program will be divided into three divisions. Division I will be U6, Division II U8 and U10 and Division III for U12. Games will be played Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.     Sidney's schools will be dismissed at 2 p.m. on Wednesday March 5 and will not be in session on Thursday and Friday. The closure allows students, faculty and staff to support the Red Raiders basketball team in this year's state tournament in Lincoln.     The Sidney Jaycees will present a Super Shooters competition at the Cheyenne County Community Center on Sunday at 2 p.m. Super Shooters, which is being sponsored by Miller Office Products, is an individual timed basketball competition.
