    Five seminarians from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago recently spent eight days in the Sidney area as the “hands on” portion of a course on rural ministry. The course is offered yearly by the seminary. This year marks its twelfth year running.     By the numbers, the 2014 NTA Western Zone shoot, held at Sidney Shooting Park, was a sizable affair. After all, 34 trap shooters from Nebraska, 5 shooters from Colorado, and 1 shooter from Wyoming fired at a total of 14,700 registered trap targets during the competition on June 7 and 8.     Just two years ago at age 12, Nick Edwards joined thelocal gun club in Soldotna, Alaska. He began shooting Trap and Skeet with other youth on a Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) team.     The North trounced the South 30-7 in the Shrine Bowl, an annual all-star football game held in Kearney on Saturday. One reason: Sidney’s Tucker Wintholz, who recorded two tackles, as well as a sack on defense. Offensively, the North threw for 247 yards behind solid protection.     Dalton hosted a one mile youth run, followed by a 4.5 mile obstacle course on Saturday to raised funds for repairs at the Leyton Elementary/Junior High School playground in Gurley. Some 230 people participated in the event, which raised about $15,000--including $5,500 from a Cabela's Emerging Leaders team, $1,000 from Matt Mitchell's Get Fit, Stay Fit Challenge money and $2,000 from an anonymous donor.... Full story

    Caitlyn Deal kicks off the first meeting of the Cool Kids Club 4-H gardening project group. Deal and her brothers, Jeffrey and Zach, wrote a grant for their Junior Leader 4-H Club to start a community gardening project with a learning component. They teamed up with the Cool Kids Club. Balandran evened the score for Sidney, thanks to a pass from offensive right winger Hannah Rawley. Sterling again struck beating Riggs and her defensive line. Rowley stated that she would be attending Chadron State Collage this fall and participate in the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP), a cooperative agreement between Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.     A new sign has been erected at the Grand Prairie Cemetery, located about two miles south of Sidney. Volunteers taking care of the location decided age and weather made replacing the sign a necessity. The present Grand Prairie Cemetery was associated with the Dunkard Church. The first burial was July 31, 1888 of Mrs. W. C. Teeter. The Dunkard Church moved to Sidney in 1890 and ceased to exist in October 1918.
