    Lucas Rosenbaum, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Rosenbaum of Sidney, Nebraska, and Savannah Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Jackson of Valentine, Nebraska, have been named the 2014 recipients of the Charles E. and Myrtle Slagle Fund Scholarships, each in the amount of $2,000. The scholarships are awarded to a member of both the Order of DeMolay and the Order of Job’s Daughters who belong to a chapter or Bethel located in the geographical area in Nebraska served by the Alliance Scottish Rite Bodies.     Two players and two coaches with ties to the Sidney area were part of a Seward team that won the 2014 Nebraska USSSA 9U AA Gold State Baseball Championship on June 29. Drew Covalt, formerly of Sidney, and Parker Hammond, great-grandson of Bill Hammond of Sidney and grandson of Chuck and Pat Hammond of Dalton, are members of the 9U Seward Junior Jays baseball team.     Sidney's Stingrays swim team sent 71 members to Bridgeport last weekend to compete in the medal meet marking the end of the summer season. In all, 47 individual swimmers won a total of 145 medals. Jonathan Kruse, Tiffany Sweetser, Dawson Sharman, Caitlyn Mueller, Cameron Leeling and Brady Sweetser came away with the most hardware, claiming six medals each. Full list in Sports.... Full story

    The Potter-Dix Children's Theater will be performing a musical, "The Great American Duck Parade," on the evening of July 18 at the Potter American Legion Hall. A silent auction and carnival games for young children will be available before the performance.     Table of Grace Mobile Food Pantry is collecting back-to-school supplies for the 2014/2015 school year. They are “rounding up” school supplies to distribute to area students in need.     The Nebraska State Patrol Troop E- Scottsbluff with assistance from local law enforcement will continue its efforts to “Drive to Save Lives” by holding special enforcement activities during an upcoming summer celebration. High visibility patrols and DUI checkpoints will be carried out in conjunction with the Oregon Trail Days celebration in Gering.     Mosquito pools from the Panhandle have recently tested positive for West Nile Virus. “Finding the virus in mosquito’s serves as a warning that the virus continues to pose a risk to people in the Panhandle,” said Tabi Prochazka, Environmental Health Coordinator for Panhandle Public Health District.
