On Nov. 22, 1963, as the 113 classmates were enjoying a Friday free from classes because of teacher conferences, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.     Ethan Nelson, a senior in high school who is attending dual credit classes at Western Nebraska Community College, is the Cheyenne County Art Guild "Artist of the Month" for September.   • Work to begin on I-80 from Bushnell to Kimball

    Work is scheduled to begin next week on I-80 from Bushnell to the west Kimball interchange, on the westbound lanes only, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads. Werner Construction of Hasting has the $2,099,199 contract for concrete repair, milling and resurfacing. The highway improvement project will involve the repair of concrete pavement, removal and replacement of asphalt and installation of new rumble strips on both shoulders.   • Road closure begins on 10th Avenue

    Beginning today, 10th Avenue at the intersections of Newton and Osage streets will be closed as part of the final phase of the road improvement project. Traffic will be detoured to 13th Avenue using Pine Street to access that part of Sidney, north of the BNSF railroad tracks. The 10th Avenue intersections with Jackson, Linden and Maple streets are open to traffic, as well as 10th Avenue between Illinois and Jackson and Linden and Maple.     Rick Larson of Potter was elected chairman of the Nebraska Wheat Board at a recent NWB meeting. Brent Robertson of Elsie was elected vice chairman. Larson is in his third term on the NWB board of directors and has served since 2003. A representative of District 2, Rick and his wife Diane live and farm in Banner and Kimball counties.     The Wide Awake Circle of the King’s Daughter’s in Sidney, which was founded in 1891, is gearing up for its annual donation drive. The charity, which is more than a century old provides various types of assistance for those in the Sidney area. The King’s Daughters might contribute to rent, utilities or medical bills.     The Nebraska State Patrol conducted checks of underage tobacco compliance as part of the Tobacco Free in the Panhandles comprehensive plan to keep youth from starting to use tobacco products. Officers – with the assistance of youth under the age of 18 – checked 12 convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores throughout Cheyenne County in August.     Construction as part of the Fort Sidney Road improvement project is going to make traveling that route a little slower in the next two months. Beginning Tuesday, the existing asphalt will be removed and replaced with a new surface from Highway 30 to 11th Avenue.     Cabela’s Inc. plans to open an 82,000-square-foot store in West Chester, Ohio, serving the greater Cincinnati area.     The city of Sidney Parks Department will conduct initial mosquito spraying on Sunday evening July 28th. Weather permitting, spraying will continue each Sunday evening from approximately 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., into early September, or as needed based on weather and mosquito populations.
