  • Sidney Legion teams continue skid

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jul 2, 2015

ALLIANCE, Neb. – The Sidney American Legion teams traveled the road to Alliance and finished on the short end of both ends of a junior-senior doubleheader Wednesday evening. Though mostly a well-played game defensively on both sides of the juniors game, the Sidney pitchers struggled to keep runners off base as the Spartans won 13-5 in five innings. With control being part of the issue, starter Zack Means failed to get out of the first inning in taking the loss. Meanwhile, Means combined with B...

  • Sidney swept by Gering

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jul 1, 2015

GERING, Neb. – Though the Sidney Legion Post #17 seniors came off a successful stretch by winning three of four games at their own tournament last weekend, they used a lot of pitching in the process As a result, Sidney's tired arms and difficulty dealing with the Gering starter led to an 8-0 defeat in five innings on Tuesday evening at Oregon Trail Park. On the other hand, the juniors have not played a game in six days and may have needed a little time to shake off some of the rust. With the j...

HERSHEY, Neb. – With both games ending by way of the mercy rule, it was mission accomplished for the Sidney American Legion teams on Wednesday evening as they swept a junior-senior doubleheader on the road against district opponent Hershey. The juniors erased a short-lived 1-0 deficit in game one with a six-run second to conquer the Trojans 12-2 in five innings. The juniors record now stands at 10-7 on the season. Though the juniors proved a tough act to follow, the seniors were up to the c...

  • Legion teams swept on road vs. McCook

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 23, 2015

MCCOOK, Neb. – With the outcomes of both games each largely influenced by a single sloppy inning, the road back from McCook must have seemed long and frustrating for the Sidney American Legion teams on Monday night as they dropped both ends of a junior-senior doubleheader. The juniors were within a run (4-3) before they were foiled by a four-run fourth inning on their way to a 9-3 defeat. Meanwhile, the seniors allowed six to cross the plate in the third as they were undone 8-0 in five i...

  • Sidney juniors win Gering tourney

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 22, 2015

GERING – If winning the Gering Juniors Tournament wasn’t enough, Sidney Post #17 put an extra stamp of approval on its accomplishment with three straight wins over district opponents. After topping Chadron, Alliance and Gering on Friday and Saturday, Sidney had already clinched the tournament championship before it began play on Sunday. Despite letting an 8-2 lead slip away in the finale to Bridgeport in an 11-8 loss, Sidney advanced its record to 9-6 on the year. “It was a big weekend,” said Sidney head coach Ray Witt. “We played clean bas...

  • Post #17 seniors split DH with Laramie

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 22, 2015

By the time Keaton Wakefield stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning of a tie game in the second game of a doubleheader at Legion Field on Sunday, it had already been a long afternoon for the Sidney American Legion seniors. After one ugly inning cost Sidney the opener against the Laramie Rangers, 9-3, Wakefield capped off a late-inning rally by ripping a double to bring home Brett Jaggers with the gam- winning run for the 2-1 win in the nightcap. With the doubleheader split,...

  • Sidney seniors handle Westco

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 19, 2015

About 24 hours before the Sidney senior American Legion team played the Class A Westco (Scottsbluff) Zephyrs at Legion Field Thursday night, Kyle Burton made it clear to the coaching staff, he wanted the ball. Though Burton didn't receive his answer until shortly before he threw his first pitch, it soon became clear the coaches' confidence in him was well placed. With six strong innings from Burton and an outstanding finish by closer Jake Heeren, the Post #17 seniors defeated Westco for the...

  • Talking Sports: Sidney's title in 1945 was welcomed distraction

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 18, 2015

In the winter of 1945, there were more important things going on in the world than the Sidney High School basketball team's drive for a state championship. Perhaps that's what made the '45 Maroons such a perfect diversion for a distracted community. While La Verne Couch was leading the Sidney High team to its first state championship in front of large and boisterous crowds all season, the bloodiest war in human history still raged across Europe and Asia. Despite the madness of a world at war, it...

    Stephen McKay|Jun 18, 2015

The Sidney American Legion squads made a clean sweep of the Gordon Regulators at Legion Park on Wednesday night with the juniors taking the opener 7-3 and the seniors winning the nightcap by the count of 9-1 in five innings. Sidney pitchers Zach Holtz, Brett Jaggers and Jackson Witt combined to stymie the Post 34 juniors in the opener. Holtz – the starter – picked up the win after going three innings while giving up one run on three hits and three walks. Gordon travelled to Sidney with just nin...

  • Miscues plague Sidney juniors team

    Stephen McKay|Jun 17, 2015

After being involved in a pitchers duel for about five innings, defensive miscues by Sidney and a few timely hits by Chadron conspired to upend the Post #17 juniors 6-2 at Legion Field on Tuesday night. Though the juniors were scheduled to be the opening act in a junior-senior doubleheader, the senior game was halted by lightning after just a half inning. Zack Means pitched a perfect top of the first before umpires called a halt to the proceedings at the first sign of lightning. After a delay...

  • Improvement the mantra for local Stingrays

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 16, 2015

BRIDGEPORT – When 8-year-old Kayla Westby finished the 25-meter breaststroke event at the B.R.A.T.S. Swim Meet in Bridgeport on Saturday, the first thing she wanted to know was how fast she went. Though she won the race by a fair margin, Westby didn't seem as interested in how she did against the others in the pool as much as whether or not she beat her sister Megan's team record. For about four decades or more, multitudes of Sidney youth have been benefitting from what is now called the S...

  • SIDNEY WOOD BAT TOURNAMENT

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 15, 2015

With a mixture of enthusiasm, pink wooden bats and pink shirts all stirred by an abundance of good will, the Sidney 12U baseball program and the Cheyenne County Community Center welcomed in five other teams to Legion Park for the Sidney Wood Bat Tournament over the weekend. With more than just baseball on its mind, the wood bat tournament benefitted two worthy causes. The Sidney 12U program not only helped fund its own program, but also raised more than $400 for the Sidney Regional Medical...

  • Talking Sports: Youth baseball tourney brings attention to cancer

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 11, 2015

My Mom, G-Ma Packer, S. Schroeder, Aunt Cheryl, Dr. Shaw, Aunt Janine, Aunt Char, DaNelle, Grandma Menken, Grandma Mary, Brooke's Mom, My Best Friend, Mom & Kim. Unfortunately, even many 12-year-olds have known someone who has had breast cancer. That's evident by the above list of names that will be printed on the back of the pink jerseys worn by the Sidney 12U baseball players at this weekend's Wood Bat Tournament in Legion Park. Those names represent people the players know personally. The...

  • Harvey, McKay square off in Red-Blue game

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 8, 2015

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – With only about a day to prepare, not much effort was put into devising defensive schemes by either coaching staff in an effort to combat the deep level of talent on both sides in the annual Panhandle Prep All-Star Baskeball game. With locals Cody McKay of Leyton and Lane Harvey of Sidney suiting up, McKay’s Blue team scored 63 points in the second half to win 110-98 at WNCC’s Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff on Saturday night. Among the players on both rosters were some of the best recently graduated seniors in the Panha...

  • Sidney teams swept by Buckley

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 8, 2015

Despite signs of improvement from the two teams' previous encounter, the Sidney senior American Legion team's defensive lapses Sunday foiled any hopes the locals had of beating the Buckley Bombers,. Though Post 17 lost 10-1 in their earlier meeting last month, it narrowed the difference to 6-3 Sunday night at Legion Field, and seven errors compromised any chance Sidney had of claiming victory. The loss drops Post 17 to 2-6 on the year. Meanwhile the juniors (4-3) struggled to get going...

  • Sidney girls battle in All-Star tilt

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 8, 2015

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – After playing on the same side since they were kids, it was a strange sensation for twin sisters Ashley and Maddie Stafford and teammate Savanna Rosenbaum to suddenly be thrust into a position of opposition. Though Ashley took some bragging rights home from WNCC’s Cougar Palace after her Red team toppled the Blue 62-54, it’s a game built more around fun than serious competition. But for a group of recently graduated high school athletes, there’s always a little competitiveness bubbling beneath the surface no matter the sta...

  • Local soccer league provides chance to compete for all ages

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 5, 2015

The seven-team league has two teams from Sidney, four from Sterling, Colo., and another from Alliance. They play a seven-week schedule with a two-week po...

  • Talking Sports: State track ending similar to '52 finish

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jun 4, 2015

When Sidney's Don Sabin heard about the Sidney Red Raiders boys' victory in the state track and field championships, he was just as surprised and nearly as happy as when he himself contributed to a state title for Sidney High School in 1952. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Just as it was for the Sidney Red Raiders at the state track and field championships in 2015, so it was for the Sidney Maroons in 1952 when they competed in Lincoln. The Raiders needed to win the...
