  • Bulldogs ground Briggsdale in straight sets

    Stephen McKay|Sep 30, 2013

The Peetz Bulldogs volleyball team upped its record to 6-5 overall and 3-1 at home with a straight set victory over the visiting Briggsdale Falcons (4-4) on Saturday. On homecoming weekend, the Bulldogs dispensed with Briggsdale in this district match 25-6, 25-19 and 25-13. The win advances the Bulldogs record to 5-1 in the district. Mikenna Curlee (14) and Morgan Burns (10) were a strong tandem at the net with a combined 24 kills. Melissa Schumacher provided consistency from the service line as Peetz scored 14 points in her 18 serve attempts....

  • Hayes records another career low at Bridgeport

    Stephen McKay|Sep 27, 2013

One of the first things Tabetha Hayes thought to say after her third career-low round in her last four matches was "I kind of want to go to sleep now." Despite a restless night and waking up with a sore throat due to allergies Hayes, a junior, fired a front-nine 51 on her way to a 110 at Courthouse and Jail Rock Golf Course in Bridgeport. Storm freshman Maddy Johnson followed her teammate with the best round of her young career with 126. Her round included 63s on both nines. For Hayes, her...

  • Raiders roll over Gering, Kimball

    Stephen McKay|Sep 27, 2013

After blowing past two opponents at the Gering triangular meet last night - perhaps in celebration of senior hitter Abbi Porter's 18th birthday - the Sidney Red Raiders volleyball team have won eight of its past 11 matches. But the Raiders would rather look at it like they're just starting out. "We decided today was a new season, so we're 2-0," said Sidney Head Coach Sarah Wilson. By virtue of their three-set victory (18-25, 25-14 and 25-18) over Gering (5-10, 1-4) in the first of two matches la...

  • Talking Sports

    Stephen McKay|Sep 26, 2013

There are an interesting slate of games approaching on the local sports calendar this week. Of all the battles on tap this week the most intriguing just might be the on the volleyball court. On back-to-back nights Creek Valley and Leyton will renew a rivalry that has already produced high drama this season. But I like to save the best for last - so more on this later. But here's a look at some of the other exciting match ups this week. Football: Leyton at Hay Springs. Thursday @ 7 p.m. - The gridiron action starts early this week with the...

  • Raiders, McCook share physical football style

    Stephen McKay|Sep 26, 2013

With an all-day rain on Monday, it was the perfect time for the Sidney Red Raiders football team to get last Friday night's loss to second ranked Aurora out of its system. The sodden afternoon allowed coach Todd Ekart to gather his troops inside for an extended film session. Once the lessons were learned and the film session over, there could be no more time for dwelling on the past. For what awaits Sidney at Weymouth Field this Friday night at 7 p.m. is another tough opponent in the McCook...

  • Potter-Dix drops two at Paxton

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

Though 1-0 in district play, the young Potter-Dix Coyotes volleyball team's overall record slipped to 2-7 after dropping a pair of matches at a Paxton triangular meet last night. Host Paxton (6-5) first handed the Coyotes a straight set loss 25-15 and 25-9. In the nightcap, Potter-Dix gave the Wallace Wildcats (6-3) a fierce battle. In the end, however, the Coyotes dropped a three setter 13-25, 25-16 and 22-25. "We really struggled to get going tonight. We had way too many unforced errors against Paxton," said Coyotes Head Coach Kristi Jung....

  • Peetz head into homecoming weekend on a roll

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

The Peetz volleyball team reached the .500 mark last night with a 3-1 win over the visiting Pawnee Coyotes. After opening the season with stiff out-of-district competition, the Bulldogs have fared well in district play with a 4-1 mark. Setters Jessica Uhl and Jodie Schumacher helped the hitters have a good night with 22 and 20 assists respectively. The biggest beneficiaries at the net were Mikenna Curlee and Morgan Burns with 16 and 14 kills. Mallori Bjerke had six kills and Melissa Schumacher five. Curlee had a strong night at the service...

  • Warriors sweep Bayard triangular

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

Though it wasn't always easy, the Leyton Warriors volleyball team swept two matches in a triangular meet at Bayard last night. While the Warriors (11-1) easily dispatched Garden County (3-10) in straight sets 25-13 and 25-17, the host team gave them all they could handle. Bayard edged Leyton in overtime in set one 26-24. After turning back the hosts in game two 25-17, the game for all the marbles went into overtime. This time Leyton turned the tables on the Tigers 26-24 to capture the all-import...

  • Sidney finishes strong in loss to Chase County

    Stephen McKay|Sep 25, 2013

Down two sets to none and trailing 24-22 in the third set at Chase County's home gym, the Raiders volleyball team called time out. That must have been when they decided they weren't going to go down without a fight. Whether as simply stated as Yogi's, "It isn't over 'til its over," or as poetic as Dylan Thomas' "Don't go gentle into that good night," Sidney refused to leave Imperial without showing a little bit of what they are made of. Though the Raiders (6-5) fell to the Longhorns (8-3) in...

  • Petik's round helps Raiders to third at Ogallala

    Stephen McKay|Sep 24, 2013

Led by Rachel Petik's 88, the Sidney Red Raiders golf team side-stepped most of the rainy weather to finish third at the Ogallala Invite at the Bayside Golf Course on Monday. Scottsbluff, which had five players medal, put in another strong showing to take top honors with a 340-stroke total. McCook wound up in second place by seven strokes over Sidney, 372-379. North Platte (416) and Ogallala (437) finished fourth and fifth. "The scores all seemed pretty high. It wasn't just my girls so it's hard...

  • Sidney hits the road for a battle of the unbeatens

    Stephen McKay|Sep 19, 2013

If you love Sidney football, Friday just might be the night to take a little road trip to the not so far east. In a battle of undefeated teams, the 3-0 Red Raiders travel to Aurora to meet the 3-0 Huskies at 7 p.m. CDT. The Associated Press has the Huskies ranked second in Nebraska Class B while Sidney is ranked ninth. Last season Aurora defeated Sidney at Weymouth Field 41-14. But it has already become abundently clear this is not the 2012 Raiders. All the results against Sidney's first three...

  • The big game

    Stephen McKay|Sep 19, 2013

When I was in high school, hardly anybody came to our home football games. Certainly even fewer traveled to the away games - and our games were seldom more than 30 miles distant. I grew up on an island. It was 118 miles miles long and no more than 23 miles wide at any point. But for state tournaments, we never left that island - and still there weren't many who would travel the few miles required to make an away game. When the Red Raiders took on Chase County and before that Grand Island Northwest at Weymouth Field - I was amazed at how big...

  • Campbell's 84 leads Sidney to second place at Gering

    Stephen McKay|Sep 18, 2013

Led by Jessica Campbell's lowest round of the season, the Red Raiders golf team was the runner-up finisher in the Gering Invite at the picturesque Monument Shadows Golf Course on Tuesday. Scottsbluff, which placed four golfers in the top eight and three in the top four, was the runnaway winner with a 326 total. Sidney came in at 360. Gering (381), Bridgeport (398) and Mitchell (441) rounded out the top five. The 360 was Sidney's lowest team total of the season so far. Megan Pilkington of...

  • Potter-Dix loses 3-1 to Burns

    Stephen McKay|Sep 18, 2013

The Potter-Dix Coyotes volleyball team's record fell to 1-5 after dropping a 3-1 decision in four close sets to Burns, Wyo. (5-1-1) Tuesday night. After winning the first set 25-21, the Coyotes dropped the final three in painful fashion. Despite having the Burns Broncs down in sets two and three, Potter-Dix fell short 26-24, 25-23 and 25-20. "Credit to Burns for their effort on the defensive front," said Coyotes Head Coach Kristi Jung. "They dug the ball really well and we just got frustrated."...

  • Raiders JV finishes strong at Chadron

    Stephen McKay|Sep 17, 2013

The Sidney Red Raiders junior varsity girls cross country team finished third while the boys were sixth at the Chadron HIgh School Cross Country Meet on Saturday morning. The Gering Bulldogs won both portions of the meet with 20 points to edge the host Chadron Cardinals by a single point in the girls competition. The Bulldogs 26 points were enough to get the job done in the boys competition while Chadron (45) was again the runnerup. With a sixth-place finish Genessa Schilz was the top girls...

  • Sidney golfers take third in Scottsbluff

    Stephen McKay|Sep 16, 2013

With a third-place finish, the Sidney golf team had a two-match winning streak stopped at the Scottsbluff Invite on Saturday. Sidney earned its third-place finish with a 381 total at Scotts Bluff Country Club. The host Bearcats took top honors with a 351 total while the Bulldogs of Gering were the runner up at 375. The Scotts Bluff Country Club is somewhat more difficult than the nine-hole Ridgeview Golf Course in Chadron the Raiders played last week. Though there are no dramatic elevation...

  • Raiders strong all-around in 32-13 romp over Chase County

    Stephen McKay|Sep 16, 2013

After the Sidney Red Raiders football team defeated the Chase County Longhorns 32-13 in a non-league contest at Weymouth Field Friday night, senior Logan Lewis greeted family and friends near the south end zone. As he accepted a steady stream of congratulations, back slaps and good wishes, he looked just about as he's always does after the final gun - tired but satisfield. With another 30-plus carry night, Lewis gained a hard fought 161 yards on the ground and 59 more receiving to help power...

  • Bulldogs rebound, down Pawnee in four

    Stephen McKay|Sep 16, 2013

After dropping the first set, the Peetz Bulldogs (3-5) reeled off three consecutive wins to upend the Pawnee Coyotes (4-4) 3-1 on Friday at Grover, Colo. In what turned out to be a close match from the start, Pawnee edged Peetz 25-23 in the first set. Though the Bulldogs won the next three games all were nearly as close. The Bulldogs took the final three sets 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17. Morgan Burns had another strong night at the net as she led the Dogs in kills with 21. Mikenna Curlee added another 10. Curlee proved to be strong on defense too...

    Stephen McKay|Sep 16, 2013

The Peetz Bulldogs football team broke open tie game in the third quarter by scoring 22 points on its way to a 44-26 win in Grover, Colo. Friday night. The Dogs (3-0) second-half outburst preserved their perfect record thus far in the young season. The Coyotes fell to 0-3. The Bulldogs more proficient blocking allowed Jordan Nelson to run for 247 yards and four touchdowns on just 24 carries. Logan Vach had another strong game...

  • Raiders roll over Sutherland in four sets

    Stephen McKay|Sep 13, 2013

Though she was at the top of only one statistical category last night, Sidney's Sarah Mahr had something to say in just about every phase of the contest. With their 3-1 victory, the Red Raiders volleyball team spoiled the home opener of non-conference Sutherland last night. The win advances Sidney's record to 2-2 while the Sailors fall to 1-3. None of the sets was close as the Raiders bounced Sutherland in games one (25-12), three (25-16) and four (25-11) while the Sailors had all the answers...

  • Say it ain't so

    Stephen McKay|Sep 12, 2013

There was a list compiled by ESPN not long ago that settled on the top-10 American sports upsets of all time. Of course the list was wrong. Not only because I say so, but also because you say so. Since everybody would have their own list, mine would be wrong too - at least according to yours. Top-10 lists are always fun for sports fans. Perhaps it's why those top-10 sports shows do so well. While most of us probably don't know when such shows are on, we'll stop the clicker when spinning through the channels. ESPN airs such programming. So does...

  • Raiders hope to keep streak alive on homecoming

    Stephen McKay|Sep 12, 2013

Though the home venues have changed, the Sidney Red Raiders football schedule is exactly the same as it was in 2012. The results, however, have been anything but the same. With the Homecoming game scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night at Weymouth Field, the hometown rooters hope that trend continues. After reversing fortunes against its first two opponents from 2012, Grand Island Northwest and Holdrege, they try for the three-peat on Friday night against Chase County (1-0). The Longhorns upended...
