All nine Peetz hitters reached base safely at least once, Bradey Holtz put in a 152-pitch performance, and the Bulldogs (1-1) were able to turn back the No. 2 ranked Class 1A team in the state 11-9 on the Caliche Buffaloes (0-1) own ground Tuesday afternoon. Leyton's setter supreme Katy Ernest has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball and study at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff this fall. Ernest is headed to a program that has developed a strong tradition for winning in recent years. While a winter-like storm raged outside, the Creek Valley Storm track and field team was warm and comfortable inside as it competed at the Nelson Physical Activities Building in Chadron on Saturday. As mostly clear skies and a warm sun greeted the first day of spring it was the perfect setting for the Peetz Bulldogs and Merino Rams to welcome the season with the schedule's first baseball game. Unfortunately for the visiting 'Dogs the fifth inning got away from the young squad. The Rams went on to win a 12-3 non-league contest on Thursday. We made it! Today is the first day of spring, and even if the weather sometimes doesn’t reflect it winter is done. Practice is underway for the spring sports season, when weather allows. Students from Peetz High School hit the track on Wednesday. Creek Valley senior Lane Godfrey has comitted to play basketball and golf at Hastings College this fall. Godfrey was the Storm basketball team's leader in several statistical categories this past season and a qualifier for the NSAA Boys State Golf Tournament last spring. For the second straight year Spencer Ellwanger of Sidney has been named to the 2014 Nebraska Trapshooting Association State Team. Ellwanger, 15, earned his place on the state team in the sub-junior category after qualifying in three different disciplines. To qualify for the team in the sub-junior age group one must have a minimum of 1,000 targets from the 16-yard line, 1,000 targets from the shooter's handicap yardage (18-27 yards) and 500 doubles targets (two targets at one time). Perhaps it was just too close to St. Patricks day to deny the Irish. Though the Leyton Warriors won three of the four quarters, a 23-4 edge for Falls City Sacred Heart in the second quarter, turned out to be the backbreaker as the Irish won the first-round game in the NSAA Boys Basketball Championships at Southeast High School in Lincoln 58-50.
