  • Talking Sports: Shady circumstances

    Stephen McKay|Mar 27, 2014

As I walked under the highway overpass I first noticed him. Scruffy looking with an unclean beard, unkempt appearance and tatoos all over his body. But that’s not why I came to dislike him so much. We’re in between sports seasons now. Winter season is over and spring sports are just getting started. Maybe this space should be occupied by a “best of” or some kind of a rerun at these times of the year. Instead, I’ll just take a departure from sports for the day and recall that con man and a few other characters I met while hitchiking across th...

  • Bulldogs beat down second-ranked Caliche

    Stephen McKay|Mar 26, 2014

All nine Peetz hitters reached base safely at least once, Bradey Holtz put in a 152-pitch performance, and the Bulldogs (1-1) were able to turn back the No. 2 ranked Class 1A team in the state 11-9 on the Caliche Buffaloes (0-1) own ground Tuesday afternoon. Holtz, who went the distance to earn the win, had his pitch count inflated by 13 strikeouts and 8 walks. Additionaly, some defensive miscues in the final innings helped prolong the junior hurler's outing as Caliche plated four runs. "I feel...

  • Winning tradition drew Ernest to WNCC

    Stephen McKay|Mar 25, 2014

Leyton's setter supreme Katy Ernest has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball and study at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff this fall. Ernest is headed to a program that has developed a strong tradition for winning in recent years. Under two different head coaches the Cougars have not finished below third place at nationals for seven consecutive years. During that span WNCC has captured a pair of junior college national championships, in 2007 and 2010. "I was looking for...

  • Rosenbaum sets school mark at Chadron indoor event

    Stephen McKay|Mar 24, 2014

Despite the snow and wind that fell outside, the Chadron State College Indoor High School Invite went off as planned on Saturday. With competitors from 15 teams, three states and seven different classes, it was an event more about testing the waters of competition more so than team vs. team. Though there were many Raiders highlights, especially in boys field events, the moments when Sidney's Lucas Rosenbaum grabbed the attention of nearly all in the Nelson Physical Center in Chadron on...

  • Storm undaunted by larger schools

    Stephen McKay|Mar 24, 2014

While a winter-like storm raged outside, the Creek Valley Storm track and field team was warm and comfortable inside as it competed at the Nelson Physical Activities Building in Chadron on Saturday. Despite facing 14 other schools, most much larger, the Storm were more than willing to test their competitive spirit at the Chadron State College High School Invite on Saturday. In addition to Cody-Kilgore and Morrill, Creek Valley was one of just three Nebraska Class D schools in attendance. There were also five Class B schools, two class C teams...

  • One inning unravels otherwise solid opening day for Peetz

    Stephen McKay|Mar 21, 2014

As mostly clear skies and a warm sun greeted the first day of spring it was the perfect setting for the Peetz Bulldogs and Merino Rams to welcome the season with the schedule's first baseball game. Unfortunately for the visiting 'Dogs the fifth inning got away from the young squad. The Rams went on to win a 12-3 non-league contest on Thursday. Before the game unravelled in the fifth, Peetz pitcher Bradey Holtz was sailing along with a 3-2 lead. He threw mostly fastballs, mixing in a diet of...

  • Talking Sports: Season's greetings

    Stephen McKay|Mar 20, 2014

We made it! Today is the first day of spring, and even if the weather sometimes doesn’t reflect it winter is done. As President Gerald Ford once said, “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.” OK, so it’s a bit strong to say that winter is a nightmare and I think Mr. Ford had something else on his mind back in August, 1974. Come to think of it, if you’ve ever spent a sweltering August day in Washington, D.C., you just might not mind a little touch of winter. But still, I think most everybody’s favorite season is spring. Pro...

  • Ten to Remember

    Stephen McKay|Mar 19, 2014

The Sidney Sun-Telegraph was treated to many an exciting game during this past season. We saw clutch last-second shots, dramatic comebacks, exciting wins and even a few heart breaking losses. There was even an emotional win for a beloved coach who was temporarily sent to the sidelines. Here, then is our top-10 list in no particular order - with one clear exception. Sidney 45, Gering 43 (Girls) at WNCC - Feb. 28 Considering how much was on the line and how unlikely the task, it's hard to look...

    Stephen McKay|Mar 18, 2014

Creek Valley senior Lane Godfrey has comitted to play basketball and golf at Hastings College this fall. Godfrey was the Storm basketball team's leader in several statistical categories this past season and a qualifier for the NSAA Boys State Golf Tournament last spring. On the court Godfrey was tops for Creek Valley in scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounds (8.0 rpg), assists (3.9 apg) and steals (3.2 spg). On the links Godfrey filled the number one slot for Creek Valley in 2013 and was a threat to...

  • Local shooter named to state

    Stephen McKay|Mar 18, 2014

For the second straight year Spencer Ellwanger of Sidney has been named to the 2014 Nebraska Trapshooting Association State Team. Ellwanger, 15, earned his place on the state team in the sub-junior category after qualifying in three different disciplines. To qualify for the team in the sub-junior age group one must have a minimum of 1,000 targets from the 16-yard line, 1,000 targets from the shooter's handicap yardage (18-27 yards) and 500 doubles targets (two targets at one time). • Leyton comeback falls short

    Stephen McKay|Mar 13, 2014

Perhaps it was just too close to St. Patricks day to deny the Irish. Though the Leyton Warriors won three of the four quarters, a 23-4 edge for Falls City Sacred Heart in the second quarter, turned out to be the backbreaker as the Irish won the first-round game in the NSAA Boys Basketball Championships at Southeast High School in Lincoln 58-50. Second-quarter struggles left Leyton in a 31-16 halftime rut, yet there were no heads hanging as they came out for the second half. Cruise set the tone...

  • Talking Sports: The stuff dreams are made of

    Stephen McKay|Mar 13, 2014

Another Lincoln hotel room the night before a championship bout. There's an eastward view of the city from the third-floor window of this room. The sky is clear, the moon bright and the city lights more than strong enough to blot out the stellar constellations above. But at ground level in Lincoln this weekend the big arena lights at several venues will serve to illuminate the stars of Nebraska high school basketball. My quarters are three floors above the front desk - near the elevator. It's...
