There was a line in an old sitcom--I think it was M*A*S*H*--that went something like this: “Do you have anything to add, General?” “No, although I would like to add that I have nothing to add.” That’s kind of how I feel now. I have nothing to say. I thought I might find something interesting this morning by looking at web sights that say things about today in history. I thought that might loosen some sports memory that I might find interesting to share. It so happens today is one of the most boring days in human history. Certainly it seems to...

Over the roughly 11 weeks of the fall sports season there were plenty of ups and downs, with good days and bad days for all. During that journey, many of our area athletes have shined with brilliant performances that may be long remembered. Week One The fall season began in Peetz where the Bulldogs volleyball team came back from two sets down to win their opening match of the season. Senior Morgan Burns' strong game at the net, with 11 kills and 4 blocks helped lead the charge. Mikenna Curlee...

The No. 4 Dukes upended the No. 1 Gretna Dragons on their home ground 12-7 after converting a fourth quarter turnover into the winning touchdown. Gretna advanced to the semis with a last-minute score against visiting Sidney the week before. Though York managed only four yards rushing, its quarterback...
The Norris Titans won the Nebraska Class B High School Volleyball Championship on Saturday with a 3-0 win over the Elkhorn South Storm at Grand Island’s Heartland Event Center. Both Norris (30-8) and Elkhorn South (22-14) proved to be giant killers as both made it to the finals from the bottom of the bracket. Elkhorn South qualified at No. 8 and Norris was installed as the No. 6 team. On its way to the final Elkhorn South defeated top seeded Pius X 3-2 and Omaha Skutt Catholic 3-2. Norris made its way to the final by erasing third seeded Waverl...

After eliminating the Warriors, Giltner edged No. 6 Sterling in five sets before meeting Stuart in the finals....
Despite another outstanding season the Leyton Warriors were eliminated from the Class D2 state volleyball tournament in straight sets by the Giltner Hornets on Thursday. The second seeded Hornets topped the No. 7 Warriors at Grand Island Central Catholic by set scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-17. Undeterred by the travel distance between Dalton and Grand Island, a large group of supporters made the long journey to root on their hometown Warriors. Giltner advances to play No. 6 Sterling on Friday a...
With the Leyton Warriors exit from the state volleyball tournament yesterday morning, the fall sports season for the Sun-Telegraph is now officially over. Now it's on to basketball and wrestling, and good luck to all. There was some exciting playoff action for many of the teams in our area. That the Warriors volleyball team was the last one standing is not a great surprise. It was the third year in a row and the fifth time in the last six years the Warriors have made the big dance. Congrats to...

Ever since the Leyton Warriors (30-2) volleyball team lost a 2-1 decision to the Pine Bluffs Hornets on Oct. 12, the champions of Class D2 District 6 have reeled off 10 straight victories without dropping so much as a set. Perhaps the Warriors are peaking at just the right time. After a well-deserved pep rally and send off from Dalton tomorrow at 9 a.m., the Warriors will travel east for the third consecutive year to do battle in the Nebraska D2 State Championships. The seventh seeded Warriors w...
It's hard to know exactly how Class B's top ranked football team in the state viewed the Red Raiders before their quarterfinal playoff game on Friday. But there was no mistaking how the host Gretna Dragons felt afterwards. In an extremely close game that wasn't decided until the final seconds, the top seeded Dragons prevailed over No. 8 Sidney 24-17 to advance to the semi-final round this Friday. Once the game was over Gretna's senior running back and defensive back Travis Agagah rushed over to...
Facing all the challenges of a state-playoff match, the Red Raiders season came to an end at Beatrice on Saturday with a 3-0 loss to the Orange in a sub state pairing. Unlike in past years, district champions no longer earn automatic bids to state. Instead, a system was put in place whereby the top 16 teams - based on season-long power points - would be seeded for preliminary matches. The higher seeds were given home-court advantage. As the ninth seed, Sidney was required to make the long trip...

The Coyotes' drive for a berth in the state tournament came up one game short as they fell to the Brady Eagles in the Class D1-6 final at Garden County High School in Oshkosh Thursday night. Though the Coyotes were stopped in three sets, they showed the same brand of tenacity that earned them a sub district title last week by knocking off two higher seeds. Despite the scrap they showed, Brady ended Potter-Dix's season by set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17. Leading into the District final the...

After their 36-26 win over the Blair Bears last Friday at Weymouth Field, the Red Raiders have found themselves in a place they haven't been in 20 years. But how much does that really matter when none of the players on the present team had even been born until after 1993? By virtue of knocking off the ninth seeded Bears, the Raiders earned the right to meet top-seeded Gretna at their place Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. CST. The Dragons (10-0) ended 16th seeded Gross Catholic's season last week...
