After a predominantly back-and-forth contest defined the first half, the Bulldogs (4-3) blew open a close game in the second half to win 83-45 over Creek Valley (2-6) in non-district boys baskeball action Tuesday night. Despite having to play without starting freshman guard Brett Godfrey, the young Storm team put up a strong fight in their home gym throughout the first half. Godfrey had injured his ankle last Friday in the game against Haxtun. He expects to be back in practice within a few days...

With three games in as many days coming up against three strong and unique opponents, Sidney Red Raiders boys basketball head coach Erik Kohl faces an interesting challenge. How will he prepare his team to face one of the best players in the state and then be ready to face two dangerous district opponents in the days to follow? The Raiders long weekend begins on Thursday when Mike Daum leads the undefeated Kimball Longhorns (6-0) into Cabela's Athletic Facility. Already committed to Division I S...

    Stephen McKay|Jan 7, 2014

Paxton Ehler, a senior guard and four-year varsity baskeball player at Sidney High School, has given a verbal commitment to attend and play for Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln next fall. While Ehler has been recruited by about 10 schools since the beginning of last basketball season, he only recently decided on Wesleyan. Ehler will have about half his school paid for by acacemic scholarships. "Me and my family have traveled to Lincoln a few times every year and I've always liked Lincoln,...

The Raiders (5-3) lost a chance to meet Gering in the championship game on Friday when they were downed by Laramie 63-52. Both the Raiders weekend games were at the Cabela's Athletic Facility. Sidney split their final two games at the Cabela's Holiday Shootout over the weekend, finishing on a good note with a 41-38 victory over the Gothenburg Swedes (3-6) at the Sidney Middle School gym on Saturday morning. On Friday the Raiders (5-3) third quarter offensive struggles were part of the story in their 39-26 defeat to the Hershey Panthers (9-1) at the same venue. "We didn't have an easy run in this tournament but all-in-all these three days are going to make us a better team," said...

    Stephen McKay|Jan 3, 2014

After a drive of more than five hours from Central City, the visiting Bison put up a brave front against the Sidney Red Raiders in the opening round of the Cabela's Holiday Shootout Thursday night. But in the end the Raiders asserted their dominance and pulled away in the late stages to earn a 68-53 win. The Raiders secured their victory with a balanced scoring attack in which 10 Sidney players scored. Paxton Ehler and Logan Lewis did much of the damage, tallying 14 points apiece. Lane Harvey...

  • Sidney's slow start mars first round effort

    Stephen McKay|Jan 3, 2014

After going on an offensive tear in its final game before the holiday break, the Sidney Red Raiders girls baskeball team struggled to find that same explosive touch on their return to the court Thursday night. With an offense that failed to generate a point until Abbi Porter's layup after 13:20 had elapsed in the game, Sidney dropped its opening round contest in the Cabela's Holiday Shootout 35-27 to the Central City Bison at the Cabala's Athletic Facility. The Raiders record slipped to 4-2...

  • Talking Sports: A tournament to welcome the new athletic year

    Stephen McKay|Jan 2, 2014

Hopefully by now the effects of tryptofan, heavy gravy and overspending have worn off and we can all get back to some sports. Most of all I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday and Happy New Year. As for sports, the holiday period is somewhat extended by the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout, which begins Thursday afternoon. The venues are Cabela’s Athletic Facility and the Sidney Middle School gym. Sixteen teams, including eight boys and girls teams, will compete. The host teams take center stage at the High School Thursday night. The...

During the second week of the fall sports season, Sidney Public Schools Technology Facilitator Matt McKay came across a webcast featuring a football game between the Alliance Bulldogs and the Aurora Huskies. "Maybe we should be doing that," he thought. In just three week's time his thoughts had turned to reality, when McKay and a small group of volunteers streamed live the varsity football game between McCook and Sidney from Weymouth Field on Sept. 27. With a heavy rainfall being blown sideways...

The Raiders (2-2) scoring amounted to Alex Linneman with 5 points, Zach Means with 4 and Joab Olsen, Jarod Luptak and Ryan Aurich each with 2. In the early going Sidney managed to stay with the Bulldogs. Though they quickly fell behind 6-1, with just a foul shot dropped by Alex Linneman, Zach Means helped get the Raiders back into...

Despite holding two 16-point leads in the second quarter, Sidney Red was forced to survive a furious comeback by the Chase County Longhorns to win a 56-49 non league contest Friday night. In front of the home faithful at Cabela's Athletic Facility, the Red Raiders (2-2) sent the Class C1 Longhorns (3-1) to their first defeat of the young season. • Low records a high finish

    Stephen McKay|Dec 16, 2013

As the only member of his team to travel to the Banner County Invitational on Saturday, Creek Valley wrestler Mason Low did his team proud with a second-place finish. Since the Storm were represented only by Low, Creek Valley was not a factor in the team competition. While Low’s effort earned the Storm 14 points to finish 11th of 13 teams, Sedgwick-County Fleming was the runaway winner with 165 points. Kimball finished second with 89 points and Lingle-Ft. Laramie was third at 79.5. Low captured his second-place showing in the 195 lbs. pound c...
