    Stephen McKay|Jan 24, 2014

Five Sidney wrestlers won their matches in a dual meet with Sedgwick County on Thursday night, but the Raiders came up short in the team event by a count of 48-21 at Ovid, Colo. Sedgewick County, a strong team which won the recently held 15-team Chase County Invite, captured nine weight classes. The Cougars won two of their matches by forfeit as they had a representative for each of the 14 weight classes. The Raiders match winners included: Kane Taylor at 195 lbs., who shutout Jimmy Horalek 4-0; Jake Heeren, who pinned Jordan Thompson in 1:33...

  • Sidney student earns prestigious RHOP scholarship

    Stephen McKay|Jan 23, 2014

According to those who know her best, Sidney High School senior Cody Rowley is a bright, hard working, involved and well organized student with deep-set roots in the community. In other words, those in the know considered her a perfect candidate for Chadron State College's selective Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP). Not long after Rowley completed the RHOP application and interview process, the decision makers at Chadron State and the University of Nebraska Medical Center came to the same conclusion. The major driving force behind...

  • Talking Sports: The talk and the walk

    Stephen McKay|Jan 23, 2014

I confess I’d never heard of Richard Sherman before last Sunday. I wasn’t able to watch a lot of NFL football this season and what I did see was mostly confined to the NFL Red Zone Channel. But last weekend I was excited to watch the Broncos play the Patriots and the Seahawks do battle with the 49ers. My football Sunday was made extra enjoyable when the two teams I wanted to win came through. Despite my New York upbringing and New England roots, I don’t like the Patriots but I appreciate Peyton Manning - and Archie and Eli too. I rooted for t...

  • Waite spurs late Warriors charge

    Stephen McKay|Jan 22, 2014

After eight lead changes and four ties in the first 21 minutes of play, Leyton's Kelsey Waite dropped in a third-quarter layuup that proved to be the final momentum reversal of the night. Though not secure until the last quarter of play, the fourth seeded Warriors held on to the final lead change with a bull-dog grip on their way to a 44-37 victory over the No. 5 South Platte Blue Knights in round one of the MAC girls basketball tournament at Dalton. The win sets up a date with No. 1 seed Creek...

  • Leyton has little trouble in first round

    Stephen McKay|Jan 22, 2014

The Leyton Warriors took their first step towards a MAC boys basketball title with little interference from the South Platte Blue Knights on Tuesday night in Dalton. The No. 2 Warriors jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 49-15 first-round win. The victory earns Leyton a trip to Sidney on Thursday for a matchup with No. 3 Garden County. The Eagles stalled Creek Valley's title hopes, 61-42. No. 4 Potter-Dix also advanced after beating fifth seeded Banner County...

  • Sidney knocks off Minutemen sixth consecutive win

    Stephen McKay|Jan 20, 2014

Add another win for the streaking Sidney boys basketball team as their 60-40 effort over the Lexington Minutemen at Cabela's Athletic Facility on Saturday was sixth in a row. With wins in nine of their last 10 contests the Raiders record now stands at 10-3. The Minutemen, another Class B squad which plays in District 5, fell to 5-8. For Sidney, the run is said to be a school record for boys basketball. Sidney was never in serious danger against Lexington. Tyler Wintholz's two and Paxton Ehler's...

  • Raiders too strong for Lexington

    Stephen McKay|Jan 20, 2014

With their second strong fourth-quarter foul shooting exhibition in as many days, the Raiders gave Lexington no chance for a big comeback, handing the visitors a 51-35 clubbing in a non-district contest Saturday afternoon. After shooting 15-18 from the foul line in the fourth quarter the night before in Ogallala, the Raiders went 13-16 at the Cabela's Athletic Facility less than 24 hours later. Despite two different venues with dramatically different lighting conditions, the Raiders again...

  • Torrid free throw shooting nudges Raiders past stingy Ogallala squad

    Stephen McKay|Jan 20, 2014

Without the benefit of a single field goal in the final eight minutes,Sidney still managed their most productive offensive quarter of the night to break open a close contest at Ogallala on Friday night. On the strength of 15-for-18 foul shooting in the fourth, the Red Raiders claimed a 41-34 victory over the Indians in a non-district game. Sidney finished the game with a record of 7-5 while the loss dropped the hosts to 5-7. “That’s the difference between winning and losing,” said Raiders Head Coach Tyler Shaw of the Raiders foul shoot...

Sidney's total of 107 points put them behind Sedgwick County (217), Gordon-Rushville (167.5) and Cambridge (122). Again, as they did in a dual meet last Thurdsay, the Raiders edged out Bridgeport, who finished with 100 points for a fifth-place finish. Kane Taylor (195 lbs.) and Cody Hofrock (182) led the Raiders to second and third place finishes, respectively. The leading...

Though the Raiders topped the Bulldogs in the team match, the host team--Bridgeport--managed to pull out one of the most anticipated matches of the night. Midway through the meet, Sidney's Michael Muggli faced the Bulldogs Brandon Nichols at 145 lbs. Both are highly ranked and veterans of last year's state tournament. Muggli qual...

  • Late Storm surge falls short at Paxton

    Stephen McKay|Jan 17, 2014

After trailing by 14 points at the half, Creek Valley rallied in the third quarter but still fell short at the Paxton Tigers in girls basketball action on Thursday night. With the 59-48 loss, the Storm’s record fell to 7-3. Paxton upped their mark to 4-7 after the non-district game. Summer Mueller was at the top of the scoresheet with 20 points. • Tigers drop Creek Valley

    Stephen McKay|Jan 17, 2014

While visiting Creek Valley stayed with the more experienced Paxton squad during stretches last night, the Tigers (10-1) ultimately wore down the Storm 66-44 in a non-district boys basketball game. “We played a very good first 10 minutes and then the game kind of got away from us,” said Storm Head Coach Roger Behrends. “Their inside game took over. We competed hard and the kids keep getting better.” Sophomore Colin Brott had a strong all-around performance as he led the Storm in scoring (15 points) and rebounds (9). • Talking Sports: Super woes

    Stephen McKay|Jan 16, 2014

I hope there’s snow, freezing rain, hail storms, record low temperatures and the first ever monsoon to hit the east coast of the United States on Feb. 2. I hope the islands of Manhattan, Staten, Long, Bedloe’s and all the rest of them float out to sea for several hours on that day leaving everyone high and wet in East Rutherford, New Jersey. I don’t like the idea that they’re going to hold the Super Bowl in a cold-weather city in an outdoor Stadium. Feb. 2, of course is the date of the 2014 Super Bowl. I know it’s not called the 2014 Super Bow...

  • Warriors dump Bridgeport

    Stephen McKay|Jan 15, 2014

For the first nine minutes it looked as though it could be a long night for the Warriors. But as the second quarter got underway, Leyton turned up the heat offensively and clamped down on the other end of the court to wrest control over the Bridgeport Bulldogs and claim a 44-37 decision in a non-district battle on the road Tuesday night. Though opening the second half the Bulldogs threatened to undo all the Warriors hard work of the previous period, Leyton turned back the brief challenge after w...

  • Bulldogs' second quarter run dooms Leyton

    Stephen McKay|Jan 15, 2014

After an early defensive battle the Bridgeport Bulldogs broke open a close game with Leyton in the second quarter to post a 60-36 win on Tuesday night in a non-district boys basketball contest. Though Bridgeport hails from Class C2 and Leyton D2, the proximity of their towns has created a rivalry of sorts that goes back decades. The advantage in school size - at least in the present situation - has also led to an advantage in team size. With the win the Bulldogs are now 10-1 on the year and main...

  • Sidney's high school bowlers balance mental, physical challenges of sport

    Stephen McKay|Jan 14, 2014

There comes a time in every sport when - despite all the hard work and sacrifice that went before - a moment of truth arrives. In football close games are often settled in the final two minutes making the previous 46 minutes seem almost irrelevant by comparison. In golf a whole day can come down to the final hole, the final putt. A basketball game or even a championship can be decided with not a second left on the clock - when a ball still in the air can define an entire season of struggle. In...

  • Sidney tops Bison on the road

    Stephen McKay|Jan 13, 2014

Despite the slower pace from the night before against Gering, the Raiders won their fifth game in six tries following the Christmas break Saturday night, with a 47-32 take down of the McCook Bison in a District B6 matchup. Going back to before the vacation period the Raiders (8-3, 4-1) have won seven of their last eight. For the Bison (6-5) it was their first challenge this season from a district opponent. In addition to showing they can adapt to different game paces Sidney also proved they...
