  • Raiders' dramatic rally falls short

    Stephen McKay|Jan 29, 2014

Sometimes you learn more about the soul of a team through its losses than its wins. After a wild fourth quarter the Red Raiders came up just short of a near miracle finish, falling 62-61 to the Sterling Tigers in a non-league basketball game in Wally Post Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Though the Raiders trailed by 9 points with 6:29 left in the final period, they managed to storm back to take a 3-point lead. Despite the effort behind their hard earned advantage, it took only seconds for fortune...

  • Sidney bowlers qualify for state

    Stephen McKay|Jan 28, 2014

There may have been a little nail biting going on before the word became official, but both the Sidney boys and girls bowling teams qualified for state. By virtue of their runnerup finishes at the district tournament, held at Cedar Bowl in North Platte on Saturday, the Sidney squads will head for Lincoln where they will compete for state honors Feb. 7-8, at Hollywood Bowl. It's the second year in a row that both teams have qualified for state. Last year the girls team was the Class C2 district...

The Red Raiders continued their solid run of district play by upending the Scottsbluff Bearcats 44-41 on Saturday to up their record to 5-1 in Class B District 6 competition. The win also gives the Raiders their fourth consecutive overall, which leaves them at 10-5 mark overall. Saturday marked the second time this season that Sidney has defeated Scottsbluff (1-13). Depite the Bearcats record of struggles this season, they came in hungry to Cabela's Athletic Facility. In a game that was close...

A talented group of class C2 basketball players from Bridgeport invaded Cabela's Athletic Facility on Friday night to try their hand against one of the panhandle's most dangerous Class B opponents. Although the Bulldogs (11-3) fought Sidney to a near draw after one half of play, Sidney wore down their guests the rest of the way, to claim a 44-34 victory. For Sidney (11-3) their school record winning streak reached seven. The Raiders have also won 10 of their last 11, with their only blemish...

  • Top seeds fall in MAC

    Stephen McKay|Jan 24, 2014

The last time the Minatare Indians lost a game prior to the semi-final of the MAC tournament Thursday night was in last season's sub districts. Potter-Dix did the damage on that occasion. For the Coyotes it was deja vu, all over again. Their 61-53 upset of the Indians at Sidney Middle School stopped Minatare's (9-1) nine game winning streak. The win earns the Coyotes (7-5) the right to meet local nemisis Leyton in the MAC finals on Friday. The Leyton Warriors punched their ticket to the final...

  • Potter-Dix brushes past the Eagles to reach title game

    Stephen McKay|Jan 24, 2014

The Potter-Dix girls made sure that the finals of the MAC Tournament on Saturday night would be represented by combatants wearing the same colors in both the boys and girls games. As Leyton and Potter-Dix was earlier established to be the boys MAC final, so too will be the girls title game. Potter-Dix insured their place with a 39-29 win over Garden County at Sidney Middle School on Thursday night. Earlier, the Leyton Warriors eliminated the defending MAC champion and top seeded Creek Valley...

  • Leyton overcomes slow start, batters Garden County

    Stephen McKay|Jan 24, 2014

For the Warriors, three times will have to be the charm if they are to capture the 2014 MAC Tournament title Saturday night. After a sluggish beginning the Warriors (9-3) earned passage to the MAC finals with a 53-36 semi-final win over the Garden County Eagles (5-6) at Sidney Middle School on Thursday night. "It looked to me at times like we were playing in sand," said Warriors Head Coach Gary Oltmann. "But we got our job done on defense." After fighting through the first quarter to a 12-12...

  • Sidney student earns prestigious RHOP scholarship

    Stephen McKay|Jan 23, 2014

According to those who know her best, Sidney High School senior Cody Rowley is a bright, hard working, involved and well organized student with deep-set roots in the community. In other words, those in the know considered her a perfect candidate for Chadron State College's selective Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP). Not long after Rowley completed the RHOP application and interview process, the decision makers at Chadron State and the University of Nebraska Medical Center came to the same conclusion. The major driving force behind...

  • Talking Sports: The talk and the walk

    Stephen McKay|Jan 23, 2014

I confess I’d never heard of Richard Sherman before last Sunday. I wasn’t able to watch a lot of NFL football this season and what I did see was mostly confined to the NFL Red Zone Channel. But last weekend I was excited to watch the Broncos play the Patriots and the Seahawks do battle with the 49ers. My football Sunday was made extra enjoyable when the two teams I wanted to win came through. Despite my New York upbringing and New England roots, I don’t like the Patriots but I appreciate Peyton Manning - and Archie and Eli too. I rooted for t...

    Stephen McKay|Jan 22, 2014

After eight lead changes and four ties in the first 21 minutes of play, Leyton's Kelsey Waite dropped in a third-quarter layuup that proved to be the final momentum reversal of the night. Though not secure until the last quarter of play, the fourth seeded Warriors held on to the final lead change with a bull-dog grip on their way to a 44-37 victory over the No. 5 South Platte Blue Knights in round one of the MAC girls basketball tournament at Dalton. The win sets up a date with No. 1 seed Creek...

  • Raiders too strong for Lexington

    Stephen McKay|Jan 20, 2014

With their second strong fourth-quarter foul shooting exhibition in as many days, the Raiders gave Lexington no chance for a big comeback, handing the visitors a 51-35 clubbing in a non-district contest Saturday afternoon. After shooting 15-18 from the foul line in the fourth quarter the night before in Ogallala, the Raiders went 13-16 at the Cabela's Athletic Facility less than 24 hours later. Despite two different venues with dramatically different lighting conditions, the Raiders again...
