  • Peetz battles, falls short

    Stephen McKay|Mar 3, 2014

The Bulldogs saw their season come to an abrupt end in the third-place game of the 1A District 4 playoffs with a 73-60 loss to the Briggsdale Falcons on Saturday morning at Sterling High School. While the Falcons made several runs throughout the game to gain a big lead, the Bulldogs just as often reeled them back in with their own scoring bursts--at least until the later stages of the game. "In this league it's always a game of runs," said the Bulldogs leading scorer Josh Fiscus. "We've always...

  • Raiders outpace Alliance, 48-36

    Stephen McKay|Feb 28, 2014

They were a little slow to get started, but the Red Raiders turned up the heat in the second quarter to bring themselves to the doorstep of the state tournament. Top seeded Sidney ended No. 4 Alliance's season 48-36 at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff on Thursday night to advance to the finals of the Girls Basketball District B-6 finals. For the Raiders it was the fourth time this season they defeated the Bulldogs. If the Raiders are to reach the promised land in Lincoln they wi...

  • Talking Sports: There and getting there

    Stephen McKay|Feb 27, 2014

The NSAA sure knows how to throw a party. At least it may have seemed like a party to the thousands who were in attendance during the three-day 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships. This particular event was held at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Though capacity can fluctuate depending on the event, CenturyLink lists its capacity as 18,300. It’s a big place. When the evening sessions were underway, with all four classes wrestling at the same time, it was hard to spot an open seat from the floor. From the cheap seats, the view is even m...

  • Peetz advances after romp over Pawnee

    Stephen McKay|Feb 27, 2014

They may have emerged from their kennel quietly but it wasn't long before the growl of the Bulldogs could be heard loud and clear. After falling behind 6-2 early, the No. 2 Peetz Bulldogs cruised to a 60-40 first-round win over the No. 7 Pawnee Mustangs in the Class 1A District 4 Tournament at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. Wednesday night. The Bulldogs now stand at 11-9. Peetz next prepares to meet a tough challenge against the No. 3 Caliche Buffaloes (18-2) on Thursday in a...

  • Whirlwind second quarter propels Potter-Dix past Creek Valley

    Stephen McKay|Feb 26, 2014

When Jake Johnson opened the second quarter by completing a three-point play for the Coyotes Tuesday night, it proved to be the beginning of an ill wind for Creek Valley. Second seeded Potter-Dix parlayed their sharpshooting touch of the second period into a 69-56 win over the third seed Storm the D1-12 sub-districts at Mitchell High School. The Coyotes (10-11) move on to the championship game at MHS on Thursday where they will meet No. 1 Hemingford (17-6) at 6:30 p.m. The Bobcats had little tro...

  • Sidney wrestler wants more after a season of accomplishments

    Stephen McKay|Feb 25, 2014

Despite a season that included 36 wins and a spot in the state tournament, Sidney wrestler Michael Muggli was understandably disappointed by the final results. Muggli fell agonizingly short of medaling at the state tournament, held last weekend at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. After winning two of his first three matches at 145 lbs., the Sidney junior was one win away from the Saturday brackets. That match, against Cory Washburn of Ashland-Greenwood, went into three overtimes before being...

  • Muggli falls in epic match

    Stephen McKay|Feb 24, 2014

In wrestling parlance they call it sudden victory, but for many it can be sudden agony. Despite being the aggressor throughout much of the match, Michael Muggli of Sidney High School suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in triple overtime, ending his bid for a medal at the 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships on Friday. With one more win needed to assure a medal in the Class B 145 lbs. division, Muggli had the upper hand through much of the match against Ashland-Greenwood's Cory Washburn. But...

  • Muggli still in medal contention

    Stephen McKay|Feb 21, 2014

Sidney's Michael Muggli remains in the hunt for a medal at the 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships in Omaha's CenturyLink Center. The Sidney 145 lb. competitor defeated Chase Nelson of Beatrice 7-3 on Friday morning to move on in his bid for third place. If he wins one more match he will be at least assured of a medal. Shortly after eliminating Nelson, he quickly moved to an adjacent match to watch Cory Washburn of Ashland-Greenland eliminate Brad Lenz of Blair 4-1. Muggli and Washburn will...

  • Talking Sports: The short list

    Stephen McKay|Feb 20, 2014

It’s been a while now - I don’t know how long. But I came across a list of the 10 greatest sports speeches ever made. The top one on the list was a poem by Muhammad Ali he read before fighting George Foreman in Africa - “The Rumble in the Jungle” they called it in 1974. Right away I knew it wasn’t a list to be taken seriously. I can only remember one sports speech in my lifetime that was especially memorable - at least for me. The March 3, 1993 ESPYs speech of Jim Valvano. Sure Valvano’s speech was on the list, but somewhere in the middle. For...

  • Muggli wins opening match at state

    Stephen McKay|Feb 20, 2014

At precisely 9:30 a.m., Omaha time, on Thursday morning 10 mats were whistled into action as the 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships got underway at CenturyLink Center. Just about 90 minutes after the mats came alive Sidney's Michael Muggli was called to Mat No. 1 where he ultimately defteated Tyler Berner of Syracuse in overtime 4-2. Muggli wrestles in Class B at 145 lbs. "It doesn't get any easier," said Raiders Head Coach John Ganser. "This kid he will see in the next round is about as... Full story

  • Late Storm surge drowns Morrill

    Stephen McKay|Feb 19, 2014

Fans didn't need a scoreboard to tell the winner of Tuesday night's sub-district battle between Creek Valley and Morrill. They just needed to catch the broad smiles on the faces of Storm seniors Summer Mueller and Jerry Straber as they emerged from the post-game locker room. But what their expressions didn't reveal was how difficult a road they had just traveled. It took 30:11 for No. 2 Creek Valley to gain their first lead of the game. From that point on, the Storm played their best...

  • Strong start not enough for Coyotes

    Stephen McKay|Feb 19, 2014

Facing the big and talented No. 1 seed Hemingford was a tough way to start post season play. Though Potter-Dix took it to the Bobcats early, Hemingford soon seized control and completed a 65-23 win in the sub-district semifinals on Tuesday night in Mitchell. The Bobcats will face No. 2 Creek Valley on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in the sub-district final at the same venue. Though the Coyotes ended their season with a record of 10-11, four seniors--Tiffany Lewis, Taylor Juelfs, Morgan Wolff and L...

  • Ehler had "no clue" when he broke school scoring mark

    Stephen McKay|Feb 18, 2014

In the town he once called home, Sidney senior basketball player Paxton Ehler broke the Red Raiders’ career scoring record. The moment occurred during a game on Feb 7 at Gering. Ehler broke the record previously held by Paul Hamilton, who scored 848 points between 2004-2007. Depite the historic mark, Ehler was unaware of his accomplishment at the time. In fact, he wasn’t informed of his achievement until the next day. “I had no clue I was even that close,” said Ehler. “I seem to remember me and my Dad talking about it last summer. It seemed li...

The Shrine game is scheduled for June 7, at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field in Kearney.
