  • Wind plagues Class D tourney; Gorsuch, Godfrey in top 40 after first round

    Stephen McKay|May 22, 2013

Somewhere over the thick blanket of clouds that hung over Kearney yesterday, there must have been long-dead lads of old Scotland snickering gleefully over American teenagers struggling with the game which they had wrought. With relentless and cool winds blowing between 20-25 mph and gusts exceeding 30, the 2013 Boys Class D State Golf Tournament opened yesterday at the par-71 Meadowlark Hills Golf Course. Like the name says, Meadowlark Hills is full of rolling hills and several elevation...

  • Making a statement

    Stephen McKay|May 16, 2013

“Oh you should see the Colosseum, Spaniard,” said Oliver Reed’s character Proximo to Russell Crowe’s Maximus in the 2000 movie, “Gladiator.” To many of the freshmen and other first-time competitors to the 2013 NSAA Track and Field Meet, it just may seem like the Colosseum in Rome 2,000-years-ago. Today, hundreds of high-school athletes will or have already departed for Rome and the great Colosseum, here forward to be known as Burke Stadium in Omaha. There will be two days of games beginning t...

  • Post 17 readies for summer schedule

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 15, 2013

Hit the cutoff man. Back up the play. Sacrafice bunts, suicide squeezes and safety squeezes. Take the pitch, swing away. Hit and run, run and hit. So far, for the Sidney Post 17 American Legion baseball teams, its just been drill-baby-drill. Fundamentals, proper excecution and more fundamentals. But next week, it’s no longer just the mundane, but necessary routine of daily practice. For on May 22, summer begins. Not the arbitrary summer determined by some tilt of the earth towards its sun. But t... Full story

  • Barton qualifies for state

    Stephen McKay|May 13, 2013

After it was over, Sidney’s Taylor Barton lay flat on his back beneath the bough of a large shade tree. It was a long day in near 90-degree heat, but Barton had accomplished what he set out to do. By finishing sixth in the Class B, District four Golf Tournament at Scotts Bluff Country Club yesterday, Barton qualified for the state tournament with a five-over par 77. The state’s are scheduled for May 21-22 at Jackrabbit Run Golf Course in Grand Island. Overall, the host team was the easy win...

  • Eleven Raiders heading to Omaha

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 10, 2013

Last week at the Bayard BCD Meet in Alliance, Sidney’s Morgan Linneman and Logan Lewis were named Athletes of the Meet. But that was just the warm-up act. For the show stopper, the pair set out to demonstrate how some hard work and talent can earn an all-expenses paid trip to Omaha. And for some added showmanship, several others have joined the troupe. For Nebraska Class B high school track athletes, the day of reckoning had come Thursday in the District Track Meet at Bearcat Stadium in S... Full story

  • State hopes on the line, area athletes shine at districts

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 9, 2013

Though Kate Woten of Potter-Dix trailed by about 100 yards in the early going of the 3,200-meter run, the cool-headed two miler didn’t panic. After gaining the lead on the second-to-last lap only to lose it again on the final backstretch, she still didn’t panic. There was something she wanted and it showed. Depite a spring of rainouts, snow days and bad weather all around it was ready-or-not time at the Class D District Track Meet at Chappell yesterday. On the line were invites to the 2013 NSA... Full story

  • Raiders disappointed with outcome

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 8, 2013

If you follow Sidney’s Taylor Barton around the golf course for a few holes without counting strokes, you’ll be hard pressed to figure out whether he’s playing well, poorly or somewhere in between. For the record he played well. After failing to break 80 in his last three competitive rounds, Barton looked no different yesterday on his way to shooting a two-over par 74 at the Scottsbluff Country Club. It’s Barton’s best competitive round this season. As a team Sidney, which shaved 25 strokes off... Full story

  • Raiders dominate Bayard BCD

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 7, 2013

Some things just aren’t made to stay the same. At Bulldog Stadium in Alliance on April 30, Sidney senior Sam Arterburn was locked in a neck-and-neck struggle for second place in the 1,600-Meter Run. When it was over Levi Avila of Mitchell left Arterburn nearly four seconds behind. The Sidney miler had to settle for third. Six days later things were different. The Sidney Girls proved best of the pack at the Bayard BCD track meet with 114 points to host Bayard’s 99.5. Bridgeport finished thi... Full story

  • Haircut highlight of Legion fundraiser

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 7, 2013

Even though Scott Phillips often looked like the he was in a dentists chair having two front teeth pulled without anesthesia, he managed to be a good sport thoroughout his hair-owing ordeal. Among the more than 80 items offered up in a silent auction to benefit Sidney’s American Legion baseball program, Scott Phillips head-of-hair may have been the most unusual. But at this gathering, held at the Buffalo Point Restaraunt Sunday night, it was this good cause that took center stage. And when a t...

  • Despite rough outing, Raiders on course

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 4, 2013

Despite not playing particularly well, the Sidney Raiders Golf Team looks like a group that can put a bad day behind it quickly. After the round they sat around the table making light of some of their bad holes. Had they been able to avoid bad holes, the story may have been different. The Sidney team finished 5th (365) of the seven teams competing at the Monument Shadows Golf Club in Gering. Cheyenne Central (321) won the meet with the Lions second (336) and Cheyenne East was third with 347. Senior Taylor Barton, despite scoring a nine and a...

  • Local teams adapt to spring white out

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 2, 2013

Since this spring sports schedule has played out more like a winter sports season, area coaches and activity directors needed to become as creative as artists and flexible as a circus performers when scheduling--or rescheduling--practices and events. “The weather in western Nebraska is so unpredictable this time of year, it’s very tough for kids to get into a rhythm,” Leyton Activities Director James McGown explained. Without exception, every sports schedule in this area has been affected by weather. While many events have been posponed many...

  • Learning as you go

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 2, 2013

You encounter this scenario far too often at the sports desk. Someone with a grudge objects to mention of a local high school athlete in the most disrespectful, juvenile and generally incoherent tone. More often than not, the letter arrives anonymously. These notes quickly end up in the trash. No point heard, no lesson learned. That’s how it is with us human beings. We generally respond best when approached positively. I, for one, am fond of constructive criticism. It helps me get better. Anyone who takes pride in what they do would never w... Full story

  • Coyotes look to improve despite series of personal bests at Pine Bluffs

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|May 1, 2013

Some people are never satisfied. Despite 21 personal-best performances and additional event wins, many members of the Potter-Dix track team didn’t feel it was a solid performance. “I would say about 15 were by athletes experienced in the event for which they earned a personal best,” said Coyotes head coach Robert Hilpert. At the Pine Bluffs High School Invitational at Carlstrum Field yesterday the Coyotes boys team finished in second place with 95 points. Lingle-Fort Laramie was best with 117 p... Full story

  • My amazing introduction to sports

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 25, 2013

It all started on a cold, snowy February morning on Long Island, NY. No, that’s no good. True, but silly. “I was born in the house that my father built.” Nope. No good. Not true. Besides, didn’t that come from Dick Nixon? “My family is American, and has been for generations, in all its branches, direct and collateral.” Well that’s true, sort of. But Ulysses Grant wrote that line about 130-years before me. It would be true for my family too, but three of my siblings have married foreign spouses. One brother married a British woman, anothe... Full story

  • Hot and cold

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 24, 2013

In a welcome change from recent weeks, student athletes finally took center stage over the weather at the Best of the West Classic track meet in Scottsbluff on Tuesday. Though the high temperature of 43-degrees was about 20-degrees below normal and winds from the northwest were steady at 14 mph, the skies remained mostly sunny. “The cold weather was a problem for us, but it was the same problem for everyone,” said Sidney head coach John Ganser. “I’m just very pleased with how we compete... Full story

  • Legion gears up for season

    Stephen McKay, Sun-Telegraph|Apr 23, 2013

Despite uncooperative spring weather the American Legion Post 17 baseball program has already put in some hard work. Legion baseball held about a dozen practices to date, though many have necessarily been held indoors. This past Sunday the squads took advantage of a rare break in the snow storms for an outdoor workout. “Despite the bad weather we’ve managed to be pretty productive nonetheless,” said first-year seniors head coach Tim Herrera. As the team prepares for another season it’s a remin... Full story
