  • Talking Sports: Making the points

    Stephen McKay|Feb 6, 2014

One of my favorite downtime activities of late is to wander through the basketball section of the NSAA website and scan through that portion labled, "Points Leaders by Class." As the season gets later and later it becomes a more and more interesting occupation. Too bad there isn't a little more down time. Considering the eight Nebraska teams (four girls and four boys teams) in the coverage area of the Sidney Sun-Telegraph, the Class B6 boys race is the most fascinating. There's been a battle...

    Stephen McKay|Feb 3, 2014

Even when the Red Raiders held a convincing 48-30 lead midway through the third quarter over the dangerous Scottsbluff Bearcats, it didn't seem possible the hosts could be taken that easily. As it turns out they couldn't be. Scottsbluff cranked up the heat in the second half, forcing the the Raiders into a donnybrook with their Class B6 rivals. Sidney managed to hold on for a hard fought 66-62 win in Scottsbluff on Saturday night. Sidney advanced their record to 13-4, which includes wins in...

  • Height, accuracy overcome strong Raiders effort

    Stephen McKay|Feb 3, 2014

Chadron invaded the Cabela’s Athletic Facility and came away with a 62-53 win over the Raiders Friday night. Despite Sarah Mahr’s outstanding night, which included 23 points, the Cardinals were led by a pair of 6-1 twin sisters. Ashlea and Bailea Kerr provided matchup difficulties for Sidney all night, as Ashlea scored 17 points while Bailea dropped in 11 more. But another senior, Peyton Hinn, proved the biggest challenge for the Raiders as she drove in 24 points. After a short jumper by the Raiders’ Cody Rowley early in the first quart...

Though Ehler’s opening three pointer was soon answered with an equalizer by Vonsinh Sayaloune, Sidney took the lead for good moments later, when Rosenbaum dropped in a free throw. The Raiders never looked back. In the final two minutes Ehler hit another three and a foul shot for a 13-6 lead after one quart...

  • Sutherland downs Creek Valley

    Stephen McKay|Jan 31, 2014

The Sailors outscored Creek Valley 20-3 in the first quarter and went on to establish a 36-11 lead at the half. The Storm were hampered by the absence of Summer Mueller, who could not attend the game due to illness. “We just didn’t come out to play at all that first quarter,” said Creek Valley Head Coach Bill Wilbur. “We ended up playing a lot of our younger players in the game.” The Storm’s record slipped to 8-5 while Sutherland... Full story

  • Raiders' dramatic rally falls short

    Stephen McKay|Jan 29, 2014

Sometimes you learn more about the soul of a team through its losses than its wins. After a wild fourth quarter the Red Raiders came up just short of a near miracle finish, falling 62-61 to the Sterling Tigers in a non-league basketball game in Wally Post Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Though the Raiders trailed by 9 points with 6:29 left in the final period, they managed to storm back to take a 3-point lead. Despite the effort behind their hard earned advantage, it took only seconds for fortune...
