Rarely are two teams so evenly matched as Sidney and Scottsbluff. If they played the game a 1,000 times each team just might win 500 of them. As it was the Bearcats erased a 9-point fourth-quarter deficit to down the Red Raiders 57-50 at Western Nebraska Community College's Cougar Palace in a semifinal game of the 2014 District B6 Boys Basketball Tournament Monday. And so, for the season, the teams split their four games. As expected of this pair, the contest was tight throughout--with a few...

I think it means that we have something to really look forward to again next year." Peetz was a playoff team last year after finishing the season with a 6-4 mark. Offensively, Holtz led the Bulldogs in touchdowns scored...

When Katelin Cole stepped to the free-throw line with 5:33 left in the game and the Raiders trailing by 12 points, Sidney was in need of a minor miracle. Mahr's game winner was followed almost immediately by the final buzzer, followed by shrieks of joy...
The Bulldogs saw their season come to an abrupt end in the third-place game of the 1A District 4 playoffs with a 73-60 loss to the Briggsdale Falcons on Saturday morning at Sterling High School. While the Falcons made several runs throughout the game to gain a big lead, the Bulldogs just as often reeled them back in with their own scoring bursts--at least until the later stages of the game. "In this league it's always a game of runs," said the Bulldogs leading scorer Josh Fiscus. "We've always...

The NSAA sure knows how to throw a party. At least it may have seemed like a party to the thousands who were in attendance during the three-day 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships. This particular event was held at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Though capacity can fluctuate depending on the event, CenturyLink lists its capacity as 18,300. It’s a big place. When the evening sessions were underway, with all four classes wrestling at the same time, it was hard to spot an open seat from the floor. From the cheap seats, the view is even m...

Wednesday night. The Bulldogs now stand at 11-9. Peetz next prepares to meet a tough challenge against the No. 3 Caliche Buffaloes (18-2) on Thursday in a...
When Jake Johnson opened the second quarter by completing a three-point play for the Coyotes Tuesday night, it proved to be the beginning of an ill wind for Creek Valley. Second seeded Potter-Dix parlayed their sharpshooting touch of the second period into a 69-56 win over the third seed Storm the D1-12 sub-districts at Mitchell High School. The Coyotes (10-11) move on to the championship game at MHS on Thursday where they will meet No. 1 Hemingford (17-6) at 6:30 p.m. The Bobcats had little tro...

Despite a season that included 36 wins and a spot in the state tournament, Sidney wrestler Michael Muggli was understandably disappointed by the final results. Muggli fell agonizingly short of medaling at the state tournament, held last weekend at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. After winning two of his first three matches at 145 lbs., the Sidney junior was one win away from the Saturday brackets. That match, against Cory Washburn of Ashland-Greenwood, went into three overtimes before being...

In wrestling parlance they call it sudden victory, but for many it can be sudden agony. With one more win needed to assure a medal in the Class B 145 lbs. division, Muggli had the upper hand through much of the match against Ashland-Greenwood's Cory Washburn. But...
