Though six games have already been played on the high school gridiron this season, teams in District B8 open a new season, of a sort, Friday night. Here's a news flash: It will be here until Redskins owner Daniel Snyder or his successor changes the name. Sooner or later there will be capitulation. Alli Ehler and Jachob Wiedeburg of the Sidney Red Raiders led the girls and boys teams to first and second respectively in the Western Conference Cross Country Meet at Oregon Trail Park in Gering on Monday. Ehler and Wiedeburg both finished second individually. Ehler came in at 21:33 while Wiedeburg's 18:18 earned him a silver. The Potter-Dix Coyotes football team ended a three-game slide with a convincing 60-6 win over the Crawford Rams last night. The win at Crawford evens the Coyotes record at 1-1 in the district and 2-3 overall. The Coyotes rushed for 121 yards as quarterback Tyler Magninie led the way 77 yards on just 10 carries. By virtue of its third-place finish at the district tournament yesterday in Alliance, the Sidney Red Raiders golf team is headed to state. Additionally, by finishing in the top 10, Rachel Petik and Jessica Campbell qualified for the individual competition. The Raiders completed yesterday's match in 361 strokes to card ahead of fourth-place Gering (378) by a comfortable margin. Two players from the Creek Valley Storm golf team, Tabetha Hayes and Maddy Johnson, competed at the Class C5 District Tournament in Ogallala on Monday. Hayes, a junior finished with a 112, while the freshman Johnson came in at 137. Both players have made steady progress throughout the season. Hayes went on a streak of lowering her career best in four of her final five regular-season tournaments. In the Storm's most recent match she shot a career low 107. With a 4-2 record the Sidney Red Raiders volleyball team lost out on a third-place tiebreaker to the Ogallala Indians at the two-day Twin Cities Volleyball Tournament over the weekend. Though Ogallala and Sidney both finished with identical marks, Ogallala was awarded third by virtue of more set wins than the Raiders. Sidney sophomore Rachel Blauert learned last week that she will not be eligible to participate in the Class B District 4 Golf Tournament today. Since Blauert has been taking part in both varisty and junior varsity matches this season, she ended up playing in more matches than allowed under NSAA rules. The NSAA publication "Boys and Girls Golf Manual" states, "participation in interschool golf competition by any school student shall be limited to 12 meets. While a frigid wind from the north carried a sideways snowfall 30 mph across Weymouth Field, the Sidney Red Raiders dropped a heartbreaking 27-24 loss to the Lexington Minutemen in a non-distict contest Friday night. After opening the season with three straight victories the Sidney gridders have since backpedaled to even their mark at 3-3. Lexington's win advances them to 3-3 as well. The Peetz Bulldogs volleyball team dropped three straight sets to division the leading Fleming Wilcats on the road Friday afternoon. Fleming's record remains perfect in division play at 7-0. Peetz, meanwhile is close behind at 6-2. The Bulldogs overall record was evened up at 7-7. Fleming won the three sets with ever decreasing margins, 25-12, 25-16 and 25-18. Despite 303 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns from Bradey Holtz, the Peetz Bulldogs dropped a high scoring affair to league opponent Fleming 67-49 on their opponents cold and windy home turf on Friday night. With their second straight loss, Peetz is now 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the league. "The wind was so strong neither one of us could pass or punt when going against it," said the Bulldogs head coach Scott Sorensen. The Peetz Bulldogs volleyball team advanced its record past .500 to 7-6 with a straight-set victory at Briggsdale Thursday night. The district win also advanced the Bulldogs record to 6-1 in the conference. Meanwhile the Falcons (4-5) remain winless in district competiton at 0-5. The Panhandle Senior Ladies Golf Association held their final outing of the season at Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering recently. Finishing in first place with one birdie was the team of Joyce Asmus, Mary Ann Brothers, Myrna Carroll and Vickie Nemnich. Also with one birdie was the second-place team of Sharon Havely, Claudia Benda and Gail Magers. With a large group of students having traveled the 20 or so miles from Bridgeport to Dalton, the battle for the loudest student section at Thursday night's volleyball match was too close to call. But on their home court the Warriors proved too much for the Class C2 Bulldogs, as they won in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-20. For Leyton it was their 19th win against just one loss. Last Friday at Alliance the Bulldogs hosted the Lexington Minutemen football squad in similar weather conditions as those faced by McCook and Sidney at Weymouth Field the same night. While Weymouth Field appeared to hold up well under the adverse weather conditions, the Minutemen were not so lucky at Alliance. Sidney senior golfer Rachel Petik carded an 88 to lead a group of six Raiders qualifiers at the Best of the West Tournament at Gering's Monument Shadows Golf Course on Wednesday. Petik's score was good enough to earn her second place in what amounts to an area all-star event. Only players that have broken 100 in competition were eligible. Despite a raucous-home crowd and an energetic-pep band behind them the Scottsbluff Bearcats couldn't match the energy of Sidney's Red Raiders on the volleyball court. With the final going overtime, the Potter-Dix Coyotes volleyball team lost a tough five-set match to the South Platte Blue Knights in a non-district matchup Tuesday night. On South Platte's (6-5) home ground, the Coyotes (4-9) were felled 25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 15-17. "This was a close match the entire night," said Potter-Dix Head Coach Kristi Jung. The only thing that seems to be able to stop Creek Valley's Tabetha Hayes from reaching lower and lower--a good thing in golf--is the end of the regular season. For the fourth time in her last five rounds, Hayes again cut her competitive best. Her 107 at the Hershey Invite yesterday was a career-best round by three strokes. With more than 20 teams competing from all around state in the University of Nebraska Kearney Invite yesterday, the Sidney Red Raiders girls cross country team finished 11th while the boys were 16th. More than 420 long-distance runners from over 20 states competed Saturday, Sept. 28 in the Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon and Half Marathon, running through some of the best scenery Nebraska has to offer. The Leyton Warriors swept past three opponents to win the Potter-Dix Volleyball Invite on Saturday. Leyton first came back to top Pine Bluffs, Wyo. 23-25, 25-22 and 25-15.
