Happy New Year. Not exactly. Not according to the Gregorian calendar anyway. Or the Chinese calendar. I think it’s the Year of the Horse and we’re now in the year 2565. As for the Jewish New Year, that’s not until Sept. 25-26, which will mark the beginning of the year 5775. Kind of reminds me of an old song by Zager and Evans. They had a one-hit-wonder called “In the Year 2525.” They’re from Lincoln, by the way. Bottom line is everybody can have their own calendar, and I have mine. At least for the purposes of this space. It was just about a ye...
Led by senior Brendon Brown, the Red Raiders shaved 28 strokes off their previous team total, finishing second at the Sidney Invite at Hillside Golf Course Tuesday. Scottsbluff took the top prize with a 321 total while Sidney came in at 335. The Raiders total at the shorter Rivers Edge Golf Club in North Platte last week was 363. Laramie (339), Alliance (349) and Gering (366) rounded out the top five. Brown had the low score for Sidney as he braved the winds, challenging pin positions and slick...
Despite some uncharacteristic struggles, Creek Valley managed a fifth-place finish at the Bayard Invite on Tuesday. The Storm finished with a 412 total in their first 18-hole match of the season. The team from Mitchell won the match with a 355 while host Bayard was close behind at 357. After having taken 369 strokes, Bridgeport finished fourth while Chase County’s 373 was good enough for fourth. In the individual competition, Henry Heeg (77) of Kimball picked up a narrow win over Bayard’s Trae Blanco (78). Sophomore Wyatt McMillen was the top f...

The Sidney Soccer Club Black Hawks U-14 team had a long day on Saturday with three consecutive games at Sterling (Colo.) Middle School. To make matters more exhausting - and more interesting - is that each of the three games went right down to the final whistle. Unfortunately for the locals, they came up on the short end of three one-goal games. Sidney took on its first challenge with a 10:30 a.m. start time against Haxtun, Colo. Despite a solid first half, the Black Hawks dropped a 4-3...
Considering the rate at which Raiders teammates Logan Lewis and Jake Heeren are improving their distance in the shot put, they may end up being each other's toughest competition before season's end. With Lewis trumping the field in the shot put, the Red Raiders scored 103.5 points to win the Ed Moore Invitational in Ogallala by a comfortable margin over Mitchell (82) and Cozad (79.5). Host Ogallala (69) finished fourth while Gothenburg (65) rounded out the top five. Coming into the Ed Moore...

After being snowed out at Perkins County on Monday, the Creek Valley Storm managed to taste a little home cooking thanks to the reschedule. The team was also given a little more time to consume the fare. With the 18 hole match shortened to a nine-hole sprint and moved from Grant to Chappell Golf Club Tuesday, the Class C Perkins County Plainsmen edged the Class D Storm in a dual match 195-190 in a battle between non-district foes. The young Storm team was led by their senior, Lane Godfrey,...
There was a time when Kate Woten was just an average high school track athlete. But then she got serious. Woten, a veteran of the 2013 NSAA Track Championships in Omaha and an honor-roll student at Potter-Dix High School, signed a letter of intent on Monday to study and run track at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D. "It's surreal--I never thought this would actually be possible," said Woten. "I didn't let myself think it was possible until it happened because I didn't want to be di...
The Sidney boys track team showed strength across the board on their way a convincing win in the Red Raider Invitational Track Meet on Saturday at Weymouth Field. With mostly sunny skies and temperatures nearing 70 degrees, the setting was ideal for what was the opening outdoor meet of the 2014 season. Sidney's total of 175 points put them well ahead of second-place finisher Ogallala (116). Alliance (110.83) was third. Potter-Dix finished ahead of all the Class D schools with 38.5 points for fif...
Strong individual performances and beautiful weather highlighted the Red Raider Invitational Track Meet on Saturday as a large contingent of schools from three classes descended on Weymouth Field at Sidney High School. Four local schools competed in the event with Class D schools Creek Valley, Leyton and Potter-Dix joining Class B host Sidney. In the girls team competition Gothenburg came out on top with 154 points while Ogallala was runnerup with 116. Sidney followed in third place with 66...
With fifth-place on the leaderboard, the young Sidney boys golf team opened their season to mixed results at the cool and windy River's Edge Golf Club in North Platte on Friday. The Raiders finished with a total of 363 strokes, off the pace set by McCook at 329. Behind the Bison were Gering (343), Grand Island (349) and host North Platte (356). In all there were 11 varsity teams competing. Among the top-10 individual finishers, Ryan Birner secured a fifth-place medal with a 13-over par 83. Anoth...
Leyton High School two-sport athlete and honor-roll student Kassandra Harris has signed a letter of intent to participate in track and study at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. Harris, who was also one of the top players on the volleyball team that went to state the past three years, originally had set a goal to play volleyball when she moved on to college. After medaling in sixth in the discus at the state championships in Omaha last year, Harris began entertaining thoughts of...
As I walked under the highway overpass I first noticed him. Scruffy looking with an unclean beard, unkempt appearance and tatoos all over his body. But that’s not why I came to dislike him so much. We’re in between sports seasons now. Winter season is over and spring sports are just getting started. Maybe this space should be occupied by a “best of” or some kind of a rerun at these times of the year. Instead, I’ll just take a departure from sports for the day and recall that con man and a few other characters I met while hitchiking across th...
All nine Peetz hitters reached base safely at least once, Bradey Holtz put in a 152-pitch performance, and the Bulldogs (1-1) were able to turn back the No. 2 ranked Class 1A team in the state 11-9 on the Caliche Buffaloes (0-1) own ground Tuesday afternoon. Holtz, who went the distance to earn the win, had his pitch count inflated by 13 strikeouts and 8 walks. Additionaly, some defensive miscues in the final innings helped prolong the junior hurler's outing as Caliche plated four runs. "I feel...

Leyton's setter supreme Katy Ernest has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball and study at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff this fall. Ernest is headed to a program that has developed a strong tradition for winning in recent years. During that span WNCC has captured a pair of junior college national championships, in 2007 and 2010. "I was looking for...

Despite the snow and wind that fell outside, the Chadron State College Indoor High School Invite went off as planned on Saturday. With competitors from 15 teams, three states and seven different classes, it was an event more about testing the waters of competition more so than team vs. team. Though there were many Raiders highlights, especially in boys field events, the moments when Sidney's Lucas Rosenbaum grabbed the attention of nearly all in the Nelson Physical Center in Chadron on...
While a winter-like storm raged outside, the Creek Valley Storm track and field team was warm and comfortable inside as it competed at the Nelson Physical Activities Building in Chadron on Saturday. Despite facing 14 other schools, most much larger, the Storm were more than willing to test their competitive spirit at the Chadron State College High School Invite on Saturday. In addition to Cody-Kilgore and Morrill, Creek Valley was one of just three Nebraska Class D schools in attendance. There were also five Class B schools, two class C teams...
