  • Sidney boys win conference

    Stephen McKay|May 5, 2014

As Sidney's Jachob Wiedeburg crossed the finish line, holding off a charging Chadron runner, he gave a gentle fist pump. Though completely exhausted from his effort he seemed to know that he not only ran the race of his life, but helped shutout two Alliance runners in the process. With a boost from many personal best performances, the Sidney boys track team took back from Chadron High School their first conference title in 44 years on Saturday. Meanwhile the Raiders girls also had a number of...

  • Local stars shine at Best of the West

    Stephen McKay|May 2, 2014

Close finishes, personal best efforts and plenty of drama made up the annual all-star track & field event known as The Best of the West Classic in Scottsbluff Thursday. Representatives from three area schools - Sidney, Potter-Dix and Leyton - sent qualifiers to the event, and all came away with the hardware of success. As only qualified team members were present, the Best of the West is more of an individual event than a team affair. However, the Sidney boys managed to outpoint the other 21...

The Sidney Red Raiders Golf team struggled to their worst team score of the season Thursday at the home of its most dangerous district opponent, Scottsbluff. Sidney finished the tournament with a total of 382 strokes at Scotts Bluff Country Club. Sidney's low score was again turned in by senior Brendon Brown, who recorded an 89. • Talking Sports: Making the show

    Stephen McKay|May 1, 2014

Once upon a time I could be transfixed for hours by the Baseball Encyclopedia or Baseball Almanac. Now the information once housed in those enormous volumes can be found right at our fingertips on the Internet. I spent some time recently scanning through all the major league players born in Nebraska. It’s a long list, but most of them seem to be from back east - Lincoln and Omaha are well represented, the panhandle not so much. It’s a population thing of course. The odds are somewhat better that a player would be from the east. Only one player...

  • Swift as a Fox

    Stephen McKay|Apr 30, 2014

Somewhere above the tree line approaching Pikes Peak, after more than 13 miles of running, up more than 7,000 vertical feet, Sidney's Stan Fox had already been separated from his senses. Though a highly skilled and well conditioned athlete, even Fox was not immune from the symptoms of oxygen deprivation. Despite having entered orbit as he approached the summit of the Pikes Peak Marathon, Fox pressed on. Feeling strange and light headed, his brain fought to function in the thin air above 14,000...

  • Deaver signs to play at Concordia

    Stephen McKay|Apr 29, 2014

Michael Deaver, the sometimes forgotten player in the Red Raiders' powerful backfield last season, signed a letter of intent to play football at Concordia University in Seward on Monday. While Deaver has been passionate about playing football since middle school, he thought his career had come to an end in a playoff game at Gretna last November. But then he received a surprise telephone call about a month after the season finale. "Coach (Vance) Winter called me on the phone one day," said Deaver...

  • Split personality

    Stephen McKay|Apr 28, 2014

Splitting the team between two venues on Friday may have affected team point totals. Still, the Red Raiders boys finished third at Scottsbluff's Twilight Invitational on Friday. Meanwhile the girls managed third place at the George Calvert Invite in Mitchell the same day, while the boys ended up in eighth. A pair of invaders from out of state were the story in Scottsbluff as Kelly Walsh from Casper, Wyo. and Rapid City (S.D.) Stevens finished ahead of the Sidney boys with 139 and 115 points...

  • Young lineup shows promise at Alliance

    Stephen McKay|Apr 28, 2014

With the bulk of the varsity team not in attendance and another injured during play, the Red Raiders finished fifth at the Alliance Invite Saturday. By scoring an impressive 300, Scottsbluff was the runaway winner of the event as four of their counted rounds were completed in less than 80 strokes. Their fifth score was an 80. As for the Individuals, Koy Potthoff was the winner with a one under par 71. The Raiders' most experienced varsity golfer at Sky View was freshman Nate Dvorak....

  • Brown, Dvorak lead Raiders on windswept Gothenburg course

    Stephen McKay|Apr 25, 2014

On a largely treeless course the wind was able to sweep over the countless mounds and hollows of Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg on Thursday, preventing most in the large field of 74 from gaining any consistency over the par 72, 6,335-yard track. The Sidney Red Raiders finished in fifth among the 14 teams attending with a total of 355 strokes. Meanwhile Sidney's district rivals McCook and Scottsbluff were separated by just two stokes for the top spot. The Bison came out on top with their...

  • Talking Sports: Streetwise

    Stephen McKay|Apr 24, 2014

I’ve hesitated to bring up this topic lest the subject of it be put at risk because of these words. I’ve lived in big cities and small towns and just about everywhere is the unfortunate reality of homelessness. I didn’t think it was an issue in Sidney until I came across one so unfortunate being last summer. I felt bad for him and hoped that he could pull himself together before long. Or at least that he could find the help he needed. I saw him occasionally throughout the fall and winter. But sightings became increasingly rare as the tempe...

  • Creek Valley makes a mark at Sutherland

    Stephen McKay|Apr 23, 2014

Creek Valley's Mason Low set a new standard for himself in two events while Hannah Schievelbein erased an old mark of hers that had stood for two years at the Wallace Invite on Tuesday at Sutherland High School. In the shot put Low finished second with a new lifetime best of of 44-05. Shortly thereafter he flung the discus 126-03 to medal in sixth place. The secret of Low's success just might have been in his footwork. "I was wearing some new throwing shoes," said Low. "Now I can actually spin t...

  • Godfrey conquers wind, competition at Perkins County

    Stephen McKay|Apr 23, 2014

With Lane Godfrey topping the leaderboard, The Creek Valley golf team finished fourth among 12 teams competing Tuesday in the Perkins County Invite at West Wind Golf Course. Godfrey had even nines of 39 for his 78 total, despite the strong winds which caused much of the field to struggle. He saved his best for last, as he went one-under par for the final two holes--including a birdie 2 on 17. Godfrey was the easy winner of the first-place medal. The runnerup carded an 88. “He played really well especially when you consider how hard the wind w...

  • Peetz pounds Weldon Valley to wrap up regular season

    Stephen McKay|Apr 23, 2014

Bradey Holtz hit for the cycle and the Peetz baseball team couldn’t have found a better way to wrap up their regular season Tuesday as they swept both games from district rival Weldon Valley. Because of limited practice time and a truncated game schedule early in the season, the Bulldogs had struggled to get comfortable at the plate. After regular slate of games recently, and routine practices, Peetz exploded for 46 runs on their home diamond. Peetz turned back the Warriors by scores of 25-6 and 21-8. “We’re much more comfortable at the plate...

    Stephen McKay|Apr 21, 2014

Three-sport standout and honor-roll student at Creek Valley Summer Mueller, of Lodgepole, made a verbal commitment to study and play basketball at Doane College this fall. "There were a lot of things I liked about Doane," said Mueller. "But when I saw how beautiful the campus was that was really the clincher. I knew this is where I wanted to go." While Mueller is already committed to playing basketball at Doane she also had a tryout with Tigers volleyball coach Gwen Egbert. The Doane coach was h...

  • Talking Sports: Time is of the essence

    Stephen McKay|Apr 17, 2014

There are a lot of cliches in sports. One of the oldest is that “records are made to be broken.” But there are also those records which many or even most of us think will never be touched. Baseball seems the most numbers crazy of the four most popular American professional sports. Baseball fans love the numbers. Me too. When I was a little boy I would pour through almanacs and record books scanning the statistics. A lot of the records I came across then still stand today. Yet after seeing a number of records fall over the years, I consider no...

  • Girls Track - Leyton, Creek Valley take podiums

    Stephen McKay|Apr 16, 2014

As Leyton's Kaitlyn Berner was preparing to run her first competitive 800-meter race at Chappell Tuesday, Warriors distance coach James McGown gave her some useful advice. "Stick close to Ashley Burr," he said. Though Berner followed her coaches advice to the letter, she still couldn't catch the veteran Creek Valley runner down the stretch. But Berner managed to get the best of her friend and adversary Burr in another closely fought battle. With the Burr-Berner rivalry being just two of many...
