  • Sidney achieves success at State

    Stephen McKay|May 27, 2014

Coming into the final event of the Class B 2014 NSAA State Track & Field Championships in Omaha, the Red Raiders boys team held a tenuous grip on second place. It would be up to the 4x400-relay team to preserve a 1.5-point lead and earn the Raiders a prime spot in the closing ceremonies. After the final race was over and a school record set, a swarm of Raiders sprinted in from every corner of Burke Stadium to join in an impromptu celebration. Over the low fence that separated fans and coaches fr...

  • Woten, Rozelle lead charge in Class D

    Stephen McKay|May 27, 2014

As three local schools sent qualifiers to the 2014 Class D NSAA State Track & Field Championships in Omaha last weekend, it was hard not to notice the many talented seniors leaving and the many underclassmen just beginning to make their mark. Perhaps the transition was best visualized by the Potter-Dix Coyotes girls team. As senior Kate Woten said her farewell in grand style, freshman Alexus Rozelle served notice of her arrival with a debut no less spectacular. Rozelle medaled in both events in...

  • Miscues cost Sidney in weekend split

    Stephen McKay|May 27, 2014

Scott Phillips baffled Hershland's lineup throughout Sunday's Gering Tournament finale. He allowed only eight balls hit beyond the infield, two of those being excuse me bloopers. When the home side threatened in the third, he fanned Jayden Foster and coaxed Landon Maassen into a feeble pop up, stranding two in scoring position. "I didn't want to add to the pain," Phillips said. By that point Sidney had already committed three errors in the field, reacted too slowly to stop Colton Marshall's stea...

  • Sidney sweep of Chadron brightens rainy evening

    Stephen McKay|May 22, 2014

Under threatening clouds, spattered by occasional spits of rain and buffeted a stiff wind blowing over Legion Field's center-field fence, Sidney's junior-senior double header went on without delay Wednesday night. For Sidney's Legion teams, however, the evening was bright, as they took two from Chadron on home ground. Keaton Wakefield shined on the mound for the juniors as he picked up the 4-2 complete-game victory. In the nightcap, the seniors broke open a tie game with a four-run fifth to cap...

  • Talking Sports: Head on a swivel

    Stephen McKay|May 22, 2014

I guess I'm like at least a few others going to the 2014 NSAA State Track & Field Championships in Omaha this weekend who are a little obsessed with the coming weather out east. I've been visiting the Weather Channel website on a daily basis now for the past 10 days. I don't suppose the report from 10 days out is especially accurate, but I've been looking anyway. For the record, the reports have been pretty consistent. The latest report from the Weather Channel indicates a 50-50 chance of...

  • Legion player selected for All-American squad

    Stephen McKay|May 21, 2014

Sidney American Legion baseball player Colton Onstott was selected to an Under Armour All-American baseball team recently, allowing him to showcase his talents to college coaches and professional scouts. Onstott, the starting catcher the past two seasons for the defending district champion Sidney Post 17, will travel to Jupiter, Florida next month. While at the Baseball Factory’s Under Armour Southeast Championships, he will experience competition against some of the best young players in America. In July he will attend a similar event in G...

  • Brown, Raiders fall just short of state

    Stephen McKay|May 20, 2014

Though Sidney saved their best team golf for the district tournament, the Red Raiders came up two places short in their bid to qualify for state. With senior Brendon Brown again leading the way with a 79, Sidney scored a 332 to finish in fifth place at the B-4 District Tournament at Cozad County Club Monday. McCook was crowned district champions with a 301 while Scottsbluff was close behind at 305. Broken Bow also earned a trip to state with a total of 310. A three-way playoff had to commence...

  • Creek Valley earns trip to Kearney

    Stephen McKay|May 20, 2014

Led by event runner-up Lane Godfrey, the Creek Valley Storm qualified as a team for the 2014 NSAA Boys State Golf Championships. A third-place finish at the District D-5 Tournament at Oregon Trail Park Golf Course in Sutherland on Monday ensured that all four from the squad will be on their way to Kearney next week. Godfrey finished three strokes behind Crawford's Colton Micheel for the top spot with his 83. The Storm's only other senior, Cory Phillips, also put in a good day with a 98. The two...

  • Sidney edged out in opener

    Stephen McKay|May 19, 2014

Following a long winter, mother nature must have been as anxious for baseball as the large crowd that gathered at Legion Field for opening day. Although blue skies, warm temperatures and a stiff wind blowing in from center field seemd like a good way to start a season, both Sidney American Legion teams ended up just one run short on Sunday. McCook earned a pair of comeback wins as it toppled the juniors 4-3 and the seniors 3-2. Lane Harvey went the distance on the hill for the seniors and...

  • Raiders sending 15 to state after district success

    Stephen McKay|May 16, 2014

Led by Logan Lewis and Lucas Rosenbaum - each who qualified for state in four events - the Sidney boys were crowned champions of District B-6 Thursday. The girls also had a good meet with a fourth-place finish behind champion McCook. The Raiders boys tallied 112 points to easily outpace runner-up Scottsbluff. But district track is more about the fight for a place at the 2014 NSAA State Track & Field Championships May 23-24 in Omaha. The top three finishers in each event earned an automatic bid t...

  • Golfers struggle in advance of districts

    Stephen McKay|May 16, 2014

The Red Raiders golf team had a rough outing at the Ogallala Invite on Thursday, just four days before the District B-4 Tournament is scheduled to begin. Sidney finished sixth among the 12 teams competing with a total of 368. McCook won the match with a 313. Sidney's score was not up the the standards of its past two matches which had been very encouraging. "I'm extremely disappointed. I really don't get it," said Raiders Head Coach Chuck Christensen. "Hopefully it all turns around by Monday."...

  • Coyotes finish first and second; ten bound for Burke

    Stephen McKay|May 15, 2014

Potter-Dix turned out to be show stoppers at the District D-11 Championships at Morrill High School as they earned a first and second place in the team competitions on Wednesday. The girls won their competition by a fairly comfortable margin, outpointing Leyton 113-92. The boys were edged by Garden County 106.5 to 105. Perhaps more important for the athletes was the chance to qualify for the NSAA State Track and Field Championships at Burke Stadium in Omaha on May 23-24. For those from...

  • Six Warriors punch their tickets to Omaha

    Stephen McKay|May 15, 2014

If you want to know how exciting it is to qualify for state, just ask Leyton's Katy Ernest and Shaela Jenkins. Though she attended as a sophomore to support her teammates, Ernest had never before competed at Burke Stadium. Now a senior, she had just one more chance. Those tears she shed at the end of the shot put competition were tears of happiness. Ernest eclipsed her previous personal best at just the time it would do her the most good. She threw 33-08.50 to earn a silver medal and a ride to...

  • Mueller, Straber sisters Storm toward state

    Stephen McKay|May 15, 2014

Despite some initial confusion, Creek Valley's Jessie Straber was the first of the Storm to qualify for state Wednesday at the Class D-11 District Championships at Morrill High School. After freshman Jessie earned the trip by tying for second in the high jump, sister Jerry, a senior, soon claimed a nearby seat on the bus. Her runner-up finish in the triple jump earned a ticket to the dance. The Storm finally completed their roster for the NSAA State Track and Field Championships when Summer...

  • Storm claim first team win at Sutherland Invite

    Stephen McKay|May 14, 2014

Though Creek Valley had already learned they were the champions of the Sutherland Invite Tuesday, edging North Platte by two strokes, there was still one more score to settle. Fresh off the heels of his best round of the season at Kimball last week, Lane Godfrey attempted to win a second consecutive individual gold medal. But he and Anselmo Cano of Garden County would have to go overtime to settle the matter. Godfrey admittedly wasn't as sharp as he was in shooting a 73 at Kimball's Four Winds...

  • Peetz star headed to Bethany College

    Stephen McKay|May 13, 2014

Because of his joy for a game that has been part of him as long as he can remember, Josh Fiscus not only brought his considerable talents to the Peetz basketball court every game the past four years - he also brought a big smile. Fiscus recently decided to continue playing his favorite game, signing a letter of intent to Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Fiscus will have about a third of his expenses paid with a basketball scholarship. The player Bethany Swedes Head Coach Clair Oleen has...

  • Raiders dominate Bayard BCD

    Stephen McKay|May 12, 2014

As Sidney's Logan Lewis posed for pictures with a large medallion around his neck following the Bayard BCD Invitational on Friday, it must have seemed a little like deja vu. In what was a fitting end to a remarkable day for the Sidney Red Raiders--both the boys and girls earned runaway victories--Logan Lewis was was awarded the Male Athlete of the Meet award. The boys took the title with 142 points to top runner-up Mitchell (112.5) by nearly 30 points. In the girls competition, Sidney (116...

  • One tough inning knocks Peetz from state tourney

    Stephen McKay|May 12, 2014

Jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the Class 1A 2014 CHSAA State Baseball Championships at All-Star Park in Lakewood, Colorado Saturday, Peetz had plenty of reason to feel optimistic about moving on. But then the fourth inning happened. Powered by five runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Dove Creek Bulldogs turned back the local 'Dogs in a first-round game 9-7. Although he held Dove Creek hitless through two innings and scoreless through three, Bradey Holtz was removed during a shaky fourth. Cody...

  • Talking Sports: Book learning

    Stephen McKay|May 8, 2014

“What a stupid I am.” That’s what Roberto De Vicenzo said after the 1968 Masters Tournament. “I’m such an idiot.” The words of Phil Mickelson following the 2006 U.S. Open. I don’t remember what Colin Montgomery said after his final round that year. Nor do I remember what Jean Van de Velde said after the 1999 Open Championship. But they were stand-up guys at least, I remember that. But for the first 13 and most of the past four years I’ve played golf all my life. Most of that golf has been recreational. But I’ve played enough competitive golf...
