  • Leyton girls earn return trip to MAC championship game

    Stephen McKay|Jan 23, 2015

Second-seeded Leyton High earned the right to defend its MAC Tournament championship Thursday night as the Lady Warriors snuck past the Creek Valley Storm 52-48 at Sidney Middle School. For the Storm (5-7), it was the second straight season its MAC hopes were dashed by Leyton (6-7) in the semifinals. Last season, Creek Valley came in as the top seed while coming into the 2015 tournament as No. 3. Leyton will meet the other semifinal winner Potter-Dix on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. for the...

  • Top-seeded Potter-Dix survives against Bayard

    Stephen McKay|Jan 23, 2015

Though the Bayard High School Lady Tigers gave Potter-Dix little trouble in their previous meeting earlier this month, the Cats nearly clawed their way to an upset victory in the rematch. But the top-seeded Lady Coyotes (11-2) survived the scare to prevail over No. 4 Bayard (5-9) 39-36 in the semifinal round of the Minuteman Activities Conference Tournament last night at Sidney Middle School. The win earned Potter-Dix a ticket into the championship game against the No. 2 Leyton Lady Warriors. Le...

  • Talking Sports: A walk down memory lane with famous pros

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 22, 2015

I played softball with Craig Swan in the summer of 1986. Maybe you never heard of Swan, but he pitched in major leagues for about 10 years. As a national league hurler, he struck out a lot as a hitter – but he could smack the daylights out of softball. I haven’t crossed paths with too many famous athletes in my time, but they always seemed to be memories that stick with me. Funny how they never remember me though – even on the rare occasions when I have met one for a second time. On Friday night at 7, the Sidney High School boys’ basketb...

  • Leyton pulls away against Storm

    Stephen McKay|Jan 21, 2015

DALTON – For almost 11 minutes, it looked as though it would be a long, drawn-out struggle to see whether Leyton High or Creek Valley would advance to the semifinals of the 2015 Boys' MAC Tournament. But when the score reached 22-22 with about 5:40 left in the half Tuesday night, the Warriors' offensive depth began to turn the tide. Though facing stiff resistance early, the defending MAC champions and third-seeded Warriors went on to eliminate the No. 6 Storm 73-56 in Dalton. Leyton earned a t...

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 20, 2015

CHAPPELL – By being awarded a third seed in the 2015 MAC Tournament, the Creek Valley High girls' basketball team just may have the rest of the conference teams right where it wants them. Powered by a first-quarter offensive explosion, the Storm found little trouble on their way to a first-round victory over sixth-seeded South Platte with a 58-34 win at the Thunder Dome on Monday night. Last season, the top-seeded Storm were defeated by eventual champion Leyton in the semifinals. As the third s...

On Saturday at Lexington (1-12), the Raiders also led much of the way. But when the Minutemaids rallied to seize the lead in the fourth quarter, it was the Raiders who had to mount a comeback to ear...

  • Sidney puts Bridgeport on the mat

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 16, 2015

In Sidney High School's wrestling dual with Bridgeport Thursday night, there were no distractions for the large group of spectators who showed up to watch the action at the Cabela's Athletic Facility. With just one mat where only one match played out at a time, there was no place for the wrestlers to hide. It was a night of one-on-one action and all eyes were on the center ring, much different than the invitationals the Red Raiders compete in when multiple matches are playing out...

  • Talking Sports: Forget a game at a time, let's analyze the MAC, Districts

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 15, 2015

While coaches are always insistent on their players taking it one game at a time, it’s not so for press and fans. We can look forward all we like. With that in mind, we can’t help but look ahead as the Minuteman Activities Conference and District tournaments creep ever closer. Now that we find ourselves at about the halfway mark of the 2014-15 season, using the term “big game” becomes ever more meaningful. There are several such contests on the hardwood in the coming week. With the MAC Tournament set to begin Monday, a possible preview of the...

  • Leyton girls fall at home against Bridgeport

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 14, 2015

DALTON – After its shooting went ice cold in the third quarter, the Leyton High girls' basketball team wasn't able to duplicate its season-opening win over Bridgeport in a non-district game Tuesday night. The Lady Warriors record slipped to 4-6 following the 38-24 loss to a team two school sizes larger. Leyton, however, maintains a solid 2-1 mark in District D2-11. The Bulldogs' record improved to 7-4 and they sit at 1-2 in District C2-12. Dani McKay led the Warriors in scoring with six p...

  • Porter lives her dream

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 13, 2015

There is no bond with a tighter grip on Sidney High School graduate Abbi Porter than her family. But she sure loves volleyball too. Bring up the subject of volleyball with Porter and her eyes light up and a smile overwhelms her face from one ear to the next. She's wanted to play volleyball – and play it well – since she was a little girl. And she has spent countless hours in practice chasing that human illusion called perfection. After earning four varsity letters playing volleyball at Sid...

  • Sidney KOs Gering via late technical

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 12, 2015

With the seconds ticking away and opportunities for victory at Gering dwindling, Tyler Wintholz found himself just where he'd been much of the night – in perfect position to score. But with just seconds remaining, he would only get one chance. Despite being fouled, Wintholz proved steady and true while returning Lane Harvey's last-second drive through the hoop. It came just an instant before the final tick of the clock. The Wintholz deuce – helped in part by a fortuitous technical foul call – ca...

KIMBALL – With less than 20 seconds to go in the third quarter at Kimball on Thursday night, the Sidney High girls' basketball team found themselves with the biggest deficit either squad had faced all night. Then Emily Mahr started to heat up. With the help of Mahr's hot hand, the Raiders took control of the game over the final 8:17 to win 46-38 against the Kimball Longhorns (4-3). The Raiders evened their record at 5-5 and remain at 1-0 in District B-6. For the Raiders, they will have little t...

  • Sidney cruises to 60-20 victory

    Stephen McKay|Jan 9, 2015

KIMBALL – With games coming up on consecutive nights against a pair of district rivals, it would have been easy for the Sidney High boys’ basketball team to look past the Kimball Longhorns. But Sidney emerged from the visitors locker room with a unified message: Good teams beat the teams they are supposed to. And the Red Raiders did so in convincing fashion with a 60-20 win over the Longhorns of District C2-12. “Sure, looking past a team you’re supposed to beat is something we have to worry about,” said Sidney head coach Erik Kohl. “But if we c...

  • Talking Sports: With holidays over, let's get back in the swing of things

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Jan 8, 2015

Not even three weeks have passed since my return to Sidney and much of that time was occupied by the lull of the holiday break. I haven’t seen much basketball and not until I get to Hemingford today will I see any wrestling. Nevertheless, with just a few basketball games under my belt, I have already noticed some impressive teams and performances. From the distance of the sidelines, it’s hard to tell from one season to the next how teams may suffer or benefit from the off-season changes. It’s a fact of life that players graduate and fresh...
