    Stephen McKay|Mar 31, 2015

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – The Sidney High boys' golf team opened its season a little slow at the North Platte Invite on Monday, but still managed a third-place finish among the nine teams entered at the Lake Maloney Golf Club. McCook, one of the favorites in the district B-4 race, won the event by 10 strokes over host North Platte. Sidney finished with a 356 total. "Since it was our first meet and we didn't get a few guys going until last week because they were at state basketball, it's an a...

  • CV golfers fall in dual match

    Stephen McKay|Mar 31, 2015

GRANT, Neb. – After qualifying for state last year, the Creek Valley High golf team opened its season with mixed results in a dual meet with Perkins County at the Pheasant Run Golf Club in Grant on Monday. After losing its top gun from last season in Lane Godfrey, the Storm are left with a young team that hopes to fill the gap. Perkins County won the two-team event with 184 strokes to Creek Valley's 207. Brett Godfrey was the low scorer for the Storm with a 47 over the par-36 nine-hole layout. B...

  • SIDNEY TRACK & FIELD INVITE: Host Red Raiders sweep titles

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 30, 2015

As Sidney High School's Preslie Allen and Gothenburg's Kayla Weyers lined up for the 800-meter run Saurday at the Sidney Invite track and field meet at Weymouth Field, they were farther apart at the start than they were at the finish. With the aid of Allen earning double gold in the 800 and 4x800 relay combined with many other strong performances, the Red Raiders' track teams defended their home turf with a sweep of both the boys' and girls' titles. The boys edged Ogallala 150-143, with...

  • SIDNEY TRACK & FIELD INVITE: Leyton, CV hold own vs. larger schools

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 30, 2015

When Leyton High' senior Kaitlyn Berner crossed the finish line in the 1,600 meters at the Sidney Invite on Saturday, she discovered it wasn't exactly her favorite event. But she still may find occasion to push herself over a metric mile again before the season is over. Creek Valley Storm freshman Payje Misegadis, on the other hand, just may have discovered she just might be better suited to running sprints after finishing the Division II 100 meters in fourth place. With Leyton and Creek Valley...

  • Peetz sweeps opening twinbill

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 27, 2015

PEETZ, Colo. – Though it may have seemed like a long winter, the opening-day pitchers for Peetz High School didn't seem to have much rust to shake off. As the Bulldogs' nine came out of hibernation Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Prairie by scores of 9-2 and 6-5 in the season opener for both teams, the Peetz hurlers fanned 32 batters in 14 innings. With a fierce wind that blew consistently at more than 20 mph, Bradey Holtz took to the hill in game one and erased 18 Mustangs' hitters via t...

  • CHADRON INDOOR HIGH SCHOOL TRACK MEET: Red Raider teams shine in 2015 opener

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 23, 2015

CHADRON – If you want to find a quick way to go a short distance, you may want to hitch your wagon to Sidney's' Von Seggern sisters, Sara and Kelly. If a longer distance is your goal, maybe a ride with the Red Raiders' 4x800-relay team of Jachob Wiedeburg, Hayden Lienemann, Brody McKnight and Logan Uhlir will get you there on time. While there were no team points tabulated, no medals awarded and no sun to bask in, the annual Chadron Indoor High School Track Meet gave 450 student athletes from 1...

CHADRON – With a field rich in Class B and C teams, Creek Valley High had a solid opening to its 2015 track season at the Chadron Indoor High School Track Meet at Chadron State College on Saturday. While the annual event does not record team scores or issue medals, the Storm managed to hold their own in a field rich with larger schools. • Talking Sports: Peetz, Sidney put on great show for fans

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 19, 2015

It’s been quite a week. Congratulations to the Peetz and Sidney boys’ basketball teams for giving their fans a great show at state. I didn’t get to see the ‘Dogs in Loveland, but at least I saw them punch their ticket at regionals. The Peetz vs. Arickaree/Woodlin regional final might have been the most entertaining game I saw all year – and that’s saying a lot. There’s something exciting about watching a team that is clearly an underdog work themselves to complete exhaustion in pursuit of victory. They wanted to win so badly they offered up th...

  • Year ends with loss in state title game

    Stephen McKay|Mar 16, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. – Through the inevitable pain that follows the loss of a championship game, a broader picture of what was accomplished slowly emerges – especially when measured against what was expected. Despite falling 60-51 to Elkhorn South (21-5) in the finals of the 2015 NSAA Class B Boys' Basketball Championships Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena, third-seeded Sidney (22-5) had its remarkable season come to an end at a time and place no one seriously contemplated three or four mon...

  • Sidney's '81 team honored at state

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 16, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. – While the 2015 version of the Sidney Red Raiders boys' basketball players made it to the Class B NSAA state tournament, they just may have benefitted from some positive karma coming from the stands at Pinnacle Bank Arena. In attendance for the Raiders run at a state championship was a group of men who knew just what the present-day Sidney players were going through. Four members of the 1981 Sidney Red Raiders state championship team were in Lincoln to be honored by the NSAA at h...

  • 2015 Nebraska Class B State Tournament: Red Raiders poised for title shot

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 13, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. – Sidney High School is in the state finals. The No. 3-seeded Red Raiders (22-4) burst onto the state scene today by repulsing a late comeback attempt by the No. 2 Beatrice (21-2) Orangemen to reach the finals of the NSAA Class B Boys' State Basketball Championships on Friday afternoon with a 51-48 victory at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Raiders will meet No. 4 Elkhorn South (20-5) for the title. Elkhorn South beat top-seeded Gretna 59-58 in the other semifinal on Friday. The c...

  • 2015 Nebraska Class B State Tournament: Bearcats declawed

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 12, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. – After picking up three fouls in the first quarter and four by halftime, Sidney High School's Jake Heeren could have been in for a very short morning. Instead, Heeren came back on the floor three minutes into the third quarter and eventually sank the game-winning basket with 5.7 seconds remaining to propel the Red Raiders to a 65-63 win over archival Scottsbluff in the opening round of the 2015 NSAA Boys' Basketball Championship at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Thursday morning. The R...

  • Talking Sports: When in Lincoln, find a fitting flick for motivation

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 12, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. – It always seems when I’m in Lincoln or Omaha for a state basketball tournament, there’s some movie on the TV box that takes my attention away from this task. When the Leyton Warriors were in Lincoln last year, my focus was divided between filling this space and watching the “Maltese Falcon” with Humphrey Bogart. The final line of that movie is Bogart’s, “That’s what dreams are made of.” It seemed appropriate to somehow incorporate that notion in with the Warriors own dreams. Last month in Omaha, what could have been a more...

  • 2015 Nebraska Class B State Tournament: Assist administrator

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 11, 2015

In mid-February of 2013, Alliance led Sidney High School 60-58 with 0.9 seconds left to play at the Cabela's Athletic Facility. But after the Raiders' sophomore-point guard Lane Harvey was fouled attempting a shot behind the arc in front of a packed house, the Red Raiders were given one more chance to please the home-town crowd. After his first two free throws swished though the strings to tie the game – assuring at least another chance in overtime – Harvey was surrounded by his bac...

The Bulldogs handed Arickaree/Woodlin its first loss of the season and – with the upset – advances to the Colorado Class 1A State Tournament in Loveland at the Budweiser Events Center beginning on Thursday afternoon.
