  • Talking Sports: Spring sports coming to exciting finishes

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Apr 16, 2015

After Sidney High School freshman Jakob Austad landed in the long jump pit last Friday at the Mitchell Invite, he bounced up and waited for the tape to be read. He sensed it was a good one. After the tape was stretched and the verdict read, Austad pumped his fist in excitement. It was the longest he’d ever jumped. On his next leap, he went even farther. Believe it or not, there’s not much time left for personal-best efforts. Amazingly enough, the spring sports season has entered the home stretch. There are just 19 school days left until the...

  • Robb 'drops the hammer' on collegiate opponents

    Stephen McKay|Apr 14, 2015

For any follower of Sidney High School sports, it's no surprise to hear that 2013 graduate Kali Robb is now breaking breaking records in college. After all, she broke many records at SHS, even some of her own. While a three-sport (volleyball, basketball and track and field) standout in Sidney, Robb has since narrowed her athletic focus down to track and field as a thrower at Concordia University in Seward. In addition to breaking the school indoor record in the shot put (47 feet, 5 inches), she...

  • Talking Sports: Opening Day brings back fond memories

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Apr 9, 2015

“To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born.” No good. Better not plagiarize Charles Dickens so early in the morning. “I was born in the house that my father built.” That’s how Richard Nixon opened his autobiography. But I was born in a Long Island hospital on a cold, snowy morning. “My family is American, and has been for generations, in all its branches direct and collateral.” Great line, and true enough for my family too. But Ulysses Grant came up with that opening sentence to his life story more than a centur...

  • SIDNEY INVITE GOLF TOURNAMENT: Red Raiders finish in 5th

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Apr 8, 2015

After the conclusion of the Sidney Invite at Hillside Golf Course on Tuesday, the future of the Red Raiders may be as hard to see as was the No. 1 green through the dense fog that greeted the players at their morning tee times. As the tournament was delayed a half hour by the fog, the Raiders finished in a disappointing tie for fifth in the varsity team competition. Despite the finish, there were a number of hopeful signs that suggest they could be able to compete with the top teams in their dis...

  • Talking Sports: Tiger at the Masters still worth watching

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Apr 2, 2015

I saw an article online recently indicating that Tiger Woods had fallen off the world’s Top 100 golfers list for the first time since 1996. Considering his amazing and rapid rise to the top – and subsequent domination of the PGA Tour – I find that pretty astounding. There have been a lot of articles written about Woods lately. But that’s always been the case – especially whenever a major rolls around. It’s even more so at Masters time – a championship he has won four times. Though Woods owns four green jackets, he hasn’t been so fitted for o...

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. – The Sidney High boys' golf team opened its season a little slow at the North Platte Invite on Monday, but still managed a third-place finish among the nine teams entered at the Lake Maloney Golf Club. McCook, one of the favorites in the district B-4 race, won the event by 10 strokes over host North Platte. Sidney finished with a 356 total. "Since it was our first meet and we didn't get a few guys going until last week because they were at state basketball, it's an a...

  • CV golfers fall in dual match

    Stephen McKay|Mar 31, 2015

GRANT, Neb. – After qualifying for state last year, the Creek Valley High golf team opened its season with mixed results in a dual meet with Perkins County at the Pheasant Run Golf Club in Grant on Monday. After losing its top gun from last season in Lane Godfrey, the Storm are left with a young team that hopes to fill the gap. Perkins County won the two-team event with 184 strokes to Creek Valley's 207. Brett Godfrey was the low scorer for the Storm with a 47 over the par-36 nine-hole layout. B...

  • SIDNEY TRACK & FIELD INVITE: Host Red Raiders sweep titles

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 30, 2015

As Sidney High School's Preslie Allen and Gothenburg's Kayla Weyers lined up for the 800-meter run Saurday at the Sidney Invite track and field meet at Weymouth Field, they were farther apart at the start than they were at the finish. With the aid of Allen earning double gold in the 800 and 4x800 relay combined with many other strong performances, the Red Raiders' track teams defended their home turf with a sweep of both the boys' and girls' titles. The boys edged Ogallala 150-143, with...

  • SIDNEY TRACK & FIELD INVITE: Leyton, CV hold own vs. larger schools

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 30, 2015

When Leyton High' senior Kaitlyn Berner crossed the finish line in the 1,600 meters at the Sidney Invite on Saturday, she discovered it wasn't exactly her favorite event. But she still may find occasion to push herself over a metric mile again before the season is over. Creek Valley Storm freshman Payje Misegadis, on the other hand, just may have discovered she just might be better suited to running sprints after finishing the Division II 100 meters in fourth place. With Leyton and Creek Valley...

  • Peetz sweeps opening twinbill

    Stephen McKay, Sports Writer|Mar 27, 2015

PEETZ, Colo. – Though it may have seemed like a long winter, the opening-day pitchers for Peetz High School didn't seem to have much rust to shake off. As the Bulldogs' nine came out of hibernation Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Prairie by scores of 9-2 and 6-5 in the season opener for both teams, the Peetz hurlers fanned 32 batters in 14 innings. With a fierce wind that blew consistently at more than 20 mph, Bradey Holtz took to the hill in game one and erased 18 Mustangs' hitters via t...
