Offensive woes plagued the Sidney American Legion seniors at Legion Field Wednesday night as they managed just five scattered hits in a 6-0 loss to Gering in a district contest. Zack Means led the offense with three hits in as many at bats while Jake Heeren and Arik Doty were the only other Sidney players to get a hit. Means was the starting pitcher and took the loss despite a solid outing amid some control issues. He went five innings and surrendered a pair of runs – just one earned – on fou...
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – After the Sidney American Legion senior team gathered for a lengthy talk after a lopsided loss to Class A Westco Tuesday night, it met in a tight circle and shouted, "family!" Despite the 13-1, five-inning loss, the seniors made a strong appearance of unity afterwards with a mind toward leaving the events of the night on the field in Scottsbluff. Though the seniors yielded eight walks and committed five errors, they left the field with their focus on a district game a...
New Sidney High School head football coach Chris Koozer had his first opportunity to run his team through its paces last week and is beginning to settle into a day-to-day routine despite a few challenges. Fresh from Burke Stadium in Omaha where he performed his final duties for Grand Island High School at the state track & field meet as an assistant coach, Koozer is now on the job here in Sidney. Though not quite surrounded by all the comforts of home, Koozer is just happy to be back on the job...

Creek Valley sophomore Brett Godfrey, who qualified to play in the Class D NSAA Boys State Golf Championships as an individual, played some of his best golf of the season despite a troubled final nine holes. Godfrey finished with a 180 total after rounds of 86 and 94 over the 6,518-yard par 71 Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney. That was good enough for a tie for 37th among the 96 golfers entered. Godfrey opened his tournament on Wednesday with an 86 in which he completed his nines in...
At the 2015 NSAA State Track and Field Championships in Omaha last weekend, I watched the final event from the west hill at Burke Stadium. My vantage point for the race was perfect for watching, and Sidney High's Donna Wiedeburg had us covered for photos. The race was close from start-to-finish, but when Hunter Secrest passed the leader down the stretch in the third leg, I began to think Sidney could win a state championship. Over the final 400 meters, Alex Linneman had the lead on the final...
The Sidney American Legion baseball teams finally held their home opener at Legion Park Wednesday night after twice being postponed by rain last weekend. The juniors (2-0) opened the doubleheader with a 7-1 win over Hershland while the seniors (1-1) lost a tight contest 6-5. Jake Heeren, who pitched the final three innings in relief of starter Keaton Wakefield in the nightcap, was the hard-luck loser for the seniors. Heeren struck out the first five batters he faced and fanned six overall....
OMAHA, Neb. – Shortly after gaining three points for the Sidney High School boys' track team in the 200-meter dash finals – the second-to-last event of the 2015 Class B NSAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday – Sidney High School sophomore Alex Linneman shook his head. "I feel like I could have done better," said Linneman, who finished sixth. "We're down in points. I needed a P.R. We needed that race and the 4x400 too." Linneman was right. The Raiders needed to take at least 12 point...
OMAHA, Neb. – After reaching the Class B state track meet for the fourth straight season, Sidney High School high jumper Savanna Rosenbaum was hoping to gain one more experience to remember her high school track career by – a state medal. While Rosenbaum, a senior, accomplished what she set out to do on a tense final jump at 5 feet, 2 inches, the Red Raiders were powered largely by a group of underclassmen who are likely dreaming of greater glory for next year. The Sidney girls finished the 201...
OMAHA, Neb. – With a mixture of outgoing state veterans and upcoming underclassmen, each of the local Class D high schools were represented by strong performers at the NSAA Girls' State Championships. None of the squads had enough firepower to compete for a team title though. Giltner won the state championship with 38 points to edge out runners-up Wynot and Axtell, which each scored 36. The top eight teams were separated by just eight points. Potter-Dix ended the meet with five points, Leyton w...
OMAHA, Neb. – If the Potter-Dix High boys' track team wasn't having enough success after ending an 11-year gold-medal drought and fighting for first place among the top Class D teams in Nebraska for two days, how about going out with a school record? Meanwhile, the Leyton Warriors, with just a small contingent on hand to represent the boys, also managed a school record. And both Warrior qualifiers will be back to try again next season. With 30 points, the Coyotes tied for fourth with Wausa in t...
OMAHA, Neb. – About a year ago, somewhere along the road between Omaha and Potter, four recently adorned NSAA track and field medalists began to dream of greater achievement. They didn't so much talk about how good it would feel to be a state champion. They talked more about what it would take to get there. But once Jake Johnson, Sam Bogert, Cameron Purcell and Cooper Hicks, in that order, ran themselves to a state championship on Friday in the 3,200-meter relay, they couldn't help but think a...
Wasn't it just a few days ago that state basketball concluded in Lincoln? Well, it sure seems like it. Especially when you look outside and see a blinding snow storm. It's hard to believe Nebraska state track is just hours away and opening day for the American Legion baseball program is just days away. The Red/Black scrimmage at Legion Park Thursday night at 6 is just a taste of what's to come. Opening day is this Sunday at Legion Field with a junior/senior doubleheader against McCook. The junio...
OMAHA, Neb. – The 2015 NSAA State Track & Field Championships are set to begin at Burke Stadium in Omaha this weekend. Dozens of local student athletes have qualified for one of the NSAA's most spectacular showcases. The meet is scheduled to start Friday and conclude with championships the next day. Three local Class D high schools – Creek Valley, Leyton and Potter-Dix – qualified a total of 23 student-athletes for the big show with several others making the trip as relay alternates. Creek...
Coming off a 2014 track and field season in which the Red Raiders boys finished as the runner-up at state, matching the success of last season could be a tall order. But with a strong cast on both the girls' and boys' teams heading to Omaha, 2014 may have been just a warm-up act. Not only are both boys and girls looking for a high finish as a team, but several Raiders look to be in a fair position for a gold medal. The Raiders have not had a state champion since Paul Hamilton was a three-time...
Despite mostly ideal playing conditions at Hillside Golf Course, scores were generally high as the Sidney High School boys golf team missed qualifying for state by seven strokes with a fourth-place finish at the District B-4 tournament on Monday. Scottsbluff won the district title with a total of 317 strokes with McCook finishing second with 334. Gering was the final team to make the state field at 352. The Raiders fourth-place total was 359. "It's pretty disappointing especially when you...
OGALLALA – As two of the top Class B shot putters in Nebraska began their battle at the Class B-6 District Track and Field meet in Ogallala on Thursday – with their long-distance throws causing an ever-increasing frequency of ear-splitting roars – a sizable crowd began to gather around the throwing ring. The loudest eruption was reserved for the final throw by Sidney High's Jake Heeren. With Heeren routinely putting the shot well beyond his previous personal best (54 feet, 4 inches) he claim...
OGALLALA – With state meet berths and district bragging rights on the line, the Sidney High Lady Raiders came through in grand style Thursday at Ogallala High School as they captured a share of their first Class B-6 District title. With Sidney needing to make up five points in the final event to catch Scottsbluff, the Raiders' 4x400-meter relay team stepped up. The group of Preslie Allen, Abby Heller, Natalie Radcliffe and Genessa Schilz, erased the deficit with their third-place finish in t...
MORRILL – Boosted by Jake Johnson, Cooper Hicks and Kelsey Rozelle qualifying for state in four events, the Potter-Dix Coyotes boys' team won the District D-11 Track and Field Championships at Morrill High School on Wednesday. The Coyotes amassed 153 points to finish well ahead of second place Garden County with 119 points. Leyton was third with 84 while the Creek Valley Storm picked up nine points to wind up in eighth. Perhaps more importantly for many of the competitors, the top two finishers...
MORRILL – For Leyton High's Abbe Draper, it could be a long wait to see if she qualified for the 2015 NSAA State Track and Field Championships scheduled for next week. With berth's at state and district bragging rights on the line at Morrill High School on Wednesday, the teams of Class D-11 did battle with the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes reigning supreme as the District champions of 2015. The Coyotes finished well ahead of runner up Crawford with 125 points to 94. The Leyton Warriors and Creek V...
I don’t follow professional sports as closely as I once did. Maybe there’s just not as much time or maybe it’s less exciting to watch the teams I’ve rooted for all my life struggle year after year. When I was a kid, I would root for my favorite baseball team with everything I had, even if they were 30 games out of first in September. That just doesn’t work for me any more. But even now, I get excited when one of my teams gets into the playoffs. Even if one of my favorites start to play well early in the season, I begin to get intereste...
LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Peetz Bulldogs are going to miss their seniors. For the upper classmen on the Peetz High baseball team, they can take pride in having reached the Class 1A CHSSA State Baseball Championships for the third consecutive year. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were eliminated from the tournament by dropping their opener to the second-ranked Community Christian Crusaders 17-0 at All-Star Park. While the Bulldogs' (5-8) season came to an end, the Crusaders (19-3) moved on the the semifi...
Before the Colorado 1A North Central League Track and Field Championships at Sterling High School last week, Peetz High junior Garrin Cox needed the throw of his life in the shot put to qualify for state. By launchiung the shot put better that 40 feet for the first time in his career, Cox opened up a seat for himself on the bus to state with inches to spare. Cox will join 10 of his teammates who have qualified for this week's state meet at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood, Colo. The meet beg...
