The Sidney Public Library received the donation to get a new desk about a year ago. The previous desk had been in place for 45 years, and with advancements in computers and technology, a desk more suited to those needs was needed for the various wires. Roberta Peters started writing books when she went into retirement. She has since published six titles: “Our Amazing Dogs,” “Our Amazing Cats,” which has two volumes, “How to Make Your Cat Adore You,” “The Cat Lady Collection” and “Some Incredibly Important Notes to Myself.” The animal rescue shelter she opened in 2002 called Hi Paws inspired the five books about animals. The Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on Monday to review and consider the approval of submissions by Dustin and Renee Thomas to replat Idlewild I Subdivision and Stephen and Paula Wolff for a 39.96-acre subdivision known as Lobo Estates, along with an application to change zoning from Agricultural to Residential Estate. December 9-15 is Computer Science Education Week nationwide. Judy Roach's fourth-graders at Central Elementary School participated in the Hour of Code program on Wednesday. The Hour of Code program allowed students to get onto csedweek.org and play some games to learn about computer coding. On Wednesday, Judy Roach's fourth grade class at Central Elementary School met up with their pen pal, face to face. Well, sort of. Roach's class participates in the Nebraska Ag in the Classroom's Ag Pen Pal Program, which has advanced beyond the old method of communication. Roach's classroom was paired up with Jeff Huffman, a farmer in Maxwell. Huffman and Roach used technology to update the notion of pen pals. On Tuesday, Norma Long from the Cheyenne County Ladies Chamber presented a check in the amount of $1,101.43 to Koti Petluri of Sidney Community Schools, to be dedicated toward the purchase of a sandbox, shed and stove. As the year draws to a close, the primary focus of Monday’s School Board meeting was the 2012-2013 audit completed by Rauner and Associates. The Nebraska Department of Education and state statutes require that all schools complete annual audits. Julie Peetz, a representative from Rauner and Associates, came to the meeting to walk the board through the year’s finances. The Gloribells of the First United Methodist Church has only been preparing for their 17th annual Christmas concert since the beginning of October, as the bells had to be refurbished. Sunday, December 8 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, the 17th Worldwide Candle Lighting will take place. The Worldwide Candle Lighting is an event put on by The Compassionate Friends. The event is to remember and honor families who have had children pass away. It unites loved ones around the globe by lighting candles for one hour.
