  • Coyotes Fall To Tigers, 53-36

    Mike Motz|Dec 15, 2022

There are few teams in D2 that can match up against the Potter-Dix Boys Coyote Basketball team, and it looks like the undefeated Paxton Tigers are one of those teams. Last season, the Coyotes came away with a 13 point win in the one game they had against Paxton, but even in the loss, the Tigers knew how to play defense against Potter-Dix, limiting the Coyotes to just 43 points. In Saturday's matchup, the Coyotes had one of those games where everything seemed to go wrong, while the Tigers...

  • Lady Coyotes Split Over Week

    Mike Motz|Dec 15, 2022

Potter-Dix's Lady Coyote Girls Basketball team got into the winning column on the ledger, against a team that they have had their way with recently in Creek Valley. On Friday, the Lady Coyotes traveled to Chappell to match up with the winless Lady Storm, and the game was a tough defensive battle from the jump. A hard-fought first period ended with Potter-Dix grabbing the scoring edge, 12-to-10, but it was clear that this game was going to be a battle with both defenses creating turnovers, bad...

Leyton's Lady Warrior Girls Basketball team remained unbeaten with a 3-and-0 record after surviving a late surge by the visiting South Platte Lady Blue Knights Friday in Dalton. After opening the season with a decisive win against Arthur County then a win by forfeit over Minatare, the Lady Blue Knights could not keep up with Sedgwick last Tuesday and dropped their first game. They then faced a 3-and-0 Lady Warrior team that was more than up for the challenge. Led by senior scoring leader Hailey...

  • Remembrance of Cheyenne County's First WWII Casualty

    Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

I received a phone call on Monday from Jacquin Coxon, a former Sidney resident with a very deep connection to the community. The 93 year-old Ms. Coxon was calling from a senior residence in Loveland, Colo., to talk about her step-brother Myron Eugene Goodwin. Goodwin was the first Cheyenne County casualty of World War II. He was killed in action on December 7, 1941 aboard the U.S.S.West Virginia when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She told me how Myron would have been 102 years old now if...

Leyton's Lady Warrior Girls Basketball team opened their season strong with two big wins, on the road against Kimball on Friday and at home Saturday against Morrill. Their season opener on Friday had them matched up against the Kimball lady Longhorns, a team that struggled with a 7-and-15 record last year. Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

Potter-Dix's Coyote Basketball team started the 2022-23 season strong with a thorough beating of the visiting Morrill Lions on Friday at Potter-/Dix High School. After a 20 win season last year, the Coyotes looked sharp and ready to be the top of the class in D2 basketball. The matchup against Morrill started out slow, with both teams playing good defense and having difficulty getting inside for easy shots. Potter-Dix was up 6-to-2 at the end of the first period, then started to loosen up their...

    Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

Last year, the Creek Valley Storm Boys Basketball team opened their season at home against Hyannis, and dropped the contest 69-to-13, which was the first of many losses in a difficult 2-and-21 season for the Storm. This year, Creek Valley traveled to Hyannis for the season opener, and although they didn't get a win, the 74-to-33 result was a lot closer than last year's contest. Hyannis was a powerhouse team last year, ending the season with a 22-and-2 record until getting bounced from the...

  • Lady Storm Struggle in Opener

    Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

After a 2021-22 season that had the Lady Storm struggle and notch just two wins, Creek Valley's opening loss to the Hyannis Lady Longhorns did have bright spots, the most being that the Lady Storm kept the game close and were able to move the ball well on offense. With only one senior on the roster, Elizabeth Whiting, the Lady Storm are relying on their younger players to provide spark and athleticism this season, and in their first game they played well. The 39-to-29 final score did not end up...

  • Warriors Open With Two Wins

    Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

Leyton traveled to Kimball Friday night for their season opener, and although the Longhorns squad played better than last year's three-win team, the Warriors wasted no time in building a lead on the Longhorns from the start. With good passing and patience on offense, the Warriors built a 19-to-10 lead at the end of the first period. Kimball played better defense and got...

Trailing 21-to-6 after the first period and then 39-to-14 at the halftime break, Peetz rallied in the second half, outscoring the Buffaloes 28-to-19, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit and Peetz came up short. Caliche senior Tanner Gerk and junior Orran Adolf each...

Sandhills has now provided the funding for two mobile pantries, and had only one...

    Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Nov 24, 2022

The big race that was being watched in Cheyenne County on Election Day was for the Cheyenne County Assessor. Normally an assessor's race is not a very high-profile office, but over the past year there has been much attention drawn to the assessor's race due to members of the community expressing dissatisfaction with the financial direction of Sidney. After the election, the unofficial results were posted and Hajek received 2260 votes versus Keller's 1017. Jordan Hajek was formerly the Cheyenne...

  • Adversity and Geography

    Mike Motz|Nov 24, 2022

When I first started as the Sports Editor for the Sun-Telegraph five years ago, the Winter Sports season had just kicked off and I was getting to know the area teams. A number of them, including the Sidney Girls Basketball team, were doing really well and were on their way to qualify for the State Tournament. I heard from a number of people, all Cheyenne County natives, a similar sentiment about the State Title prospects of our local teams. "Not gonna happen" and "Those eastern teams always beat...
