Sidney's Lady Raider Girls Basketball team defeated Scottsbluff Saturday to win the Western Conference Tournament and jump out to their first 3-and-0 start since 2008. Sidney's sharp shooting and tough defense took them to the championship round, first with a blowout defeat of Arvada on Thursday then by outlasting Chadron Friday night to set up the showdown with Scottsbluff Saturday afternoon for the championship. Leyton's Lady Warrior Girls Basketball team opened their season strong with two big wins, on the road against Kimball on Friday and at home Saturday against Morrill. Their season opener on Friday had them matched up against the Kimball lady Longhorns, a team that struggled with a 7-and-15 record last year. Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

Potter-Dix's Coyote Basketball team started the 2022-23 season strong with a thorough beating of the visiting Morrill Lions on Friday at Potter-/Dix High School. After a 20 win season last year, the Coyotes looked sharp and ready to be the top of the class in D2 basketball. The matchup against Morrill started out slow, with both teams playing good defense and having difficulty getting inside for easy shots. Potter-Dix was up 6-to-2 at the end of the first period, then started to loosen up their... Full story

Friday afternoon kicked off the 2022-23 season for the Lady Coyotes as they hosted the Lady Lions of Morrill. • Storm Boys Drop Opener To Hyannis

    Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

Last year, the Creek Valley Storm Boys Basketball team opened their season at home against Hyannis, and dropped the contest 69-to-13, which was the first of many losses in a difficult 2-and-21 season for the Storm. This year, Creek Valley traveled to Hyannis for the season opener, and although they didn't get a win, the 74-to-33 result was a lot closer than last year's contest. Hyannis was a powerhouse team last year, ending the season with a 22-and-2 record until getting bounced from the... Full story

  • Lady Storm Struggle in Opener

    Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

After a 2021-22 season that had the Lady Storm struggle and notch just two wins, Creek Valley's opening loss to the Hyannis Lady Longhorns did have bright spots, the most being that the Lady Storm kept the game close and were able to move the ball well on offense. With only one senior on the roster, Elizabeth Whiting, the Lady Storm are relying on their younger players to provide spark and athleticism this season, and in their first game they played well. The 39-to-29 final score did not end up...

  • Warriors Open With Two Wins

    Mike Motz|Dec 8, 2022

Leyton's Warrior Boys Basketball team opened their season with wins over Kimball and Morrill, both in convincing fashion. Leyton traveled to Kimball Friday night for their season opener, and although the Longhorns squad played better than last year's three-win team, the Warriors wasted no time in building a lead on the Longhorns from the start. With good passing and patience on offense, the Warriors built a 19-to-10 lead at the end of the first period. Kimball played better defense and got... Full story

Peetz's Bulldog Boys Basketball team opened their season with a loss at the annual Carlisle Classic Tournament to eventual winner Caliche, 58-to-42. The Bulldogs were unable to come back from a big Buffalo early lead. Trailing 21-to-6 after the first period and then 39-to-14 at the halftime break, Peetz rallied in the second half, outscoring the Buffaloes 28-to-19, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit and Peetz came up short. Mike Motz, Sidney Sun-Telegraph|Nov 24, 2022

The big race that was being watched in Cheyenne County on Election Day was for the Cheyenne County Assessor. • Adversity and Geography

    Mike Motz|Nov 24, 2022

When I first started as the Sports Editor for the Sun-Telegraph five years ago, the Winter Sports season had just kicked off and I was getting to know the area teams. A number of them, including the Sidney Girls Basketball team, were doing really well and were on their way to qualify for the State Tournament. I heard from a number of people, all Cheyenne County natives, a similar sentiment about the State Title prospects of our local teams. "Not gonna happen" and "Those eastern teams always beat... Full story

    Mike Motz|Nov 3, 2022

It was fitting that Sidney's Lady Raider Volleyball team punched their ticket to the 2022 NSAA State Tournament with a three-set sweep of Omaha-Duchesne Academy on Saturday afternoon as it was that same Omaha-Duchesne Academy team that bounced the Lady Raiders from the State Tournament the last time the Lady Raiders qualified back in 2019. Sidney owns a 28-and-6 record, is undefeated at 6-and-0 in District competition, and does not seem to be a team preoccupied with the past or "looking back" at...
