Saturday afternoon featured absolutely perfect weather for the annual Guns & Hoses Charity Softball game over at the softball fields next to Legion Park. Friday, August 11 was a gorgeous evening, giving Sidney's annual Night of Hope Walk for Cancer absolutely perfect summer weather for the event, and a big crowd turned out for the festivities. Night of Hope raises awareness and money for those fighting cancer and cancer survivors. This year's event raised nearly $50,000. 17 teams made the walk this year, with Team Fox being the top team. The Cheyenne County Community Center's Co-Ed Softball League is winding down, and August 14th's slate of games helped determine August 15th's matchups for the championship game. Monday's action had the Bad News Bears facing off with Ump Yurz on Field 1 at 6 p.m. while the Dalton Dingers matched up against the Red Hot Aces on Field 2. SIDNEY - The Cheyenne County Board of Commissioners and Equalization Board met Monday morning with a packed agenda that lasted well into the afternoon. On Monday night, the Village of Potter Trustees met for the monthly meeting, with Acting Secretary Melissa Gorsuch, Chairman Hal Enevoldsen, Vice-Chairman Dale Enevoldsen and Secretary Vern Nelson in attendance. It's been a fun season for the Cheyenne County Community Center Softball League, if somewhat marred by multiple cancellations and rescheduled games due to the area's fickle weather patterns. Leyton's Lady Warrior Volleyball team had an unexpected trip Monday, coming down from Dalton to practice at the Cheyenne County Community Center. The gym floor at Leyton High School was refinished and not quite ready for use, so Leyton Volleyball Head Coach Natasha Haupt had her girls come down to Sidney for their scheduled morning practice. Sidney Regional Medical Center did their part in raising money for the Night of Hope Cancer Walk on Tuesday, August 1, when their "Pie-In-The-Face" fundraiser ended, and the "victim" turned out to be Dr. Ariel Soriano. A number of doctors and administrators had donation buckets at the hospital and other locations for the last few weeks in preparation for the event. On August 12, the second annual Clint "Gus" McCrea Memorial Youth Bull Riding competition will be held in Potter. The all-day event will happen on route 77 between I-80 and Highway 30. The event is held to raise awareness of suicide and self-harm in the Rodeo and Bull-Riding Community, and is named for Clinton McCrea of Potter, who passed away on March 31, 2019. It was a fine way to open this year's Cheyenne County Fair on Saturday, with the Sidney Cheer and Dance teams taking first place at the Rowdy's Round Up Cheer & Dance Competition. CHEYENNE COUNTY – The Cheyenne County Visitors Committee (CCVC) approved six grants and discussed scheduling a special meeting for its 2023-2024 budget. SIDNEY - The Elks Lodge in Sidney was the hot spot in Cheyenne County Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon as the Way Out West Theater performed "Peter Pan" to three sold out crowds over the weekend. For the last four years, the Panhandle area sports scene has been dominated by the best athlete in the region, Luke Kasten of Potter. The Potter-Dix 2023 graduate burst on to the scene four years ago as a freshman, leading the Potter-Dix Coyote 6-Man football team to a resurgence that in following years saw undefeated seasons and chances to play for State Championships. Sidney's American Legion Post 17 Junior Baseball team traveled up to Gering over the weekend for the Area District Tournament, and lost their elimination game to Alliance on Sunday in a heartbreaker, 9-to-8. Although Saturday morning started out cool and overcast, the heat was on at the Sidney Aquatic Center as the Sidney Stingray Swim Team hosted their annual meet that brought together the finest young swimmers in the Panhandle area and beyond.
