PEETZ, CO.-- It was the Fall of 2018 the last time the Peetz Bulldog Football team beat the Prairie Mustangs, and the last four years have seen the Bulldogs fall to the Mustangs by lopsided scores. LODGEPOLE-- The 99th Annual Old Settler's Days celebrations have come and gone, and the weekend weather held out and made the events fun for all. There was no rain that disrupted any events, although the sun generated a lot of heat during the days. The events started Saturday morning with the Old Settler's Golf Tournament, a four-person scramble. The teams enjoyed perfect weather out on the links. SIDNEY--Another special session of the City of Sidney Council was held at Sidney High School on August 22 at 5:30 p.m. A large turnout of approximately 125 citizens attended the meeting, which featured the sale of 812 13th Avenue, with many of them voicing their opinions on the sale of the city-owned property. SIDNEY-- On Wednesday, August 22, Teresa Grant of Sidney was critically injured in a one-vehicle accident when her 2010 Ford F-150 Super Cab Pick-Up collided with the 13th Avenue bridge railing. HOLDREGE, NE -- Sidney Football Head Coach Ryan Smith said a few weeks back that it was good to get this season's furthest away game, all the way out in Holdrege, out of the way early. He didn't count on having to make the nearly 8-hour round-trip twice in two days. STERLING, CO.--Sidney's Lady Raider Volleyball team started their season with two road contests in Colorado, the first against Sterling on Thursday, August 24 and the second on Saturday, August 26 in Yuma. Sidney had a slow start in the match up against Sterling, dropping the first set 13-to-25 against the talented Lady Tigers. DALTON-- Leyton's Warrior Football team opened their 2023 season at home Thursday evening, and the visiting Hemingford Bobcats gave the Warriors more than they could handle, dominating the home team in a 58-to-18 win. Leyton received the ball and started first on offense, but a few miscues with snaps and a tough Bobcat defense forced a punt on the first possession. DALTON--With a refinished gym floor ready for action, the Lady Warriors of Leyton started their 2023 volleyball season off on a positive note with two big wins against visiting Minatare and Potter-Dix. SIDNEY- Monday's Cheyenne County Commissioners' meeting was held at 8 a.m. sharp Monday, August 21, and the main items on the agenda concerned firefighting equipment, budgeting of ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds, and a report by Doug Hart, Cheyenne County Highway Superintendent. It was a season of fun, and a season of rain outs, but all went well over the past week as the Division I and Division II Co-Ed Softball leagues held their playoffs and championship games. In Division II, the Bad New Bears beat Creekside 16-to-3 to earn their place in the Championship game. The MashUp team beat the Dalton Dingers in walk off fashion in the bottom of the 7th inning, 8-to-7. COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- The 6th ranked Western Nebraska Community College Lady Cougars traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa on Saturday, August 19 to compete in the Reiver Classic Tournament, and ended the competition with a 3-and-1 record. On Tuesday, August 8th, a special Sidney City Council session was held at the Sidney High School auditorium. The reason for the change of venue was the robust public interest over the sale of the building and property of 812 13th Avenue, known through the city as "Big Red", to Worldwide Trophy Adventures (WTA). We interviewed three of the key players involved in the WTA/812 13th Avenue sale and purchase transaction to clarify some of the issues involved and to give citizens a clearer understanding of the deal as proposed. Saturday afternoon featured absolutely perfect weather for the annual Guns & Hoses Charity Softball game over at the softball fields next to Legion Park. A big crowd came out to root on their favorite team, and the players and families had a great time with the event. Friday, August 11 was a gorgeous evening, giving Sidney's annual Night of Hope Walk for Cancer absolutely perfect summer weather for the event, and a big crowd turned out for the festivities. Night of Hope raises awareness and money for those fighting cancer and cancer survivors. This year's event raised nearly $50,000. 17 teams made the walk this year, with Team Fox being the top team. The Cheyenne County Community Center's Co-Ed Softball League is winding down, and August 14th's slate of games helped determine August 15th's matchups for the championship game. It's been a fun season for the Cheyenne County Community Center Softball League, if somewhat marred by multiple cancellations and rescheduled games due to the area's fickle weather patterns.
