  • Lady Raiders edge Minutemaids for 56-50 victory

John Verser, Publisher of the Sun-Telegraph|Jan 18, 2016

Sidney had the advantage for most of the game, but had to hold off a tough rally from Lexington in the final minutes of the game to win, 56-50, Saturday night at Cabela's Athletic Facility. "It was good for our team to be in a tough spot and get out of there with the win," Sidney coach Tyler Shaw said. "Last week in McCook we found ourselves in a similar spot and didn't get the job done. We were happy with the effort and plays the girls made down the stretch to come out on top." The Lady...

John Verser, Publisher of the Sun-Telegraph|Jan 15, 2016

Mikenna Curlee is happy to have her future mapped out. The 5-foot-11 Peetz senior inked a volleyball scholarship with North Platte Community College Thursday, and she couldn't be more relieved with that decision. "It was really a relief to know where I'm going to be at and have things planned out," she said. "I'll get the opportunity to play with several girls from the area who I know and who I've played against, so I'm looking forward to that." Curlee had a team-high 291 kills for the Lady...

John Verser, Publisher of the Sun-Telegraph|Jan 11, 2016

Fans expecting to see a close, gritty game for the third time against Gering this season instead got an offensive show. It was the Raiders' third win in three tries this season against the Bulldogs. With the game knotted at 4-4, Sidney went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good and outscored Gering 15-5 for the remainder of the opening quarter. Back-to-back Zack...

  • Defense, rebounding helps Lady Raiders top Gering

John Verser, Publisher of the Sun-Telegraph|Jan 11, 2016

When the shots weren't falling early in Friday night's game, Sidney used a strong defensive effort to defeat Gering. The Lady Raiders (9-4) held the Lady Bulldogs to just 10 first half points en route to the 43-25 victory. "Gering is a bigger team than we are, so anytime you can hang with them in terms of rebounding you are doing well," Sidney coach Tyler Shaw said. "Getting second chances against them is huge." Shaw added limiting Gering's inside offense turned out to be key in Friday's game....

The Raiders picked up wins over Chase County, Gering, Gordon-Rushville and Wray, Colo. Their lone loss was to Gothenburg. SHS wrestling coach John Ganser said his team had its ups and downs in the event. "Dual wrestling is a little bit different than wrestling in a tournament. You want to get all the bonus points that you can and not give up any," he said. "We gave up some...

  • Raiders 'win' Western Trails tournament

    John Verser|Jan 8, 2016

Is it possible to win a tournament without actually winning it? Sidney did just that Thursday at the Western Trails Conference Tournament in Kimball. The Raiders bested Bridgeport by half a point in the team standings to take the top spot in the tournament, even though they couldn't technically win since they are not a member of the conference. Sidney wrestling coach John Ganser said the tournament gave his team quality mat time and helped shake some rust off after the Christmas break....

  • Sidney bucked region temperature trend in 2015

    John Verser|Jan 7, 2016

Even though most of the region had a warmer 2015 than normal, Sidney’s average temperature was just below average in 2015. Sidney had an average temperature of 49.7 degrees Farenheit last year, which was four-tenths of a degree cooler than normal, according to meteorologist Richard Emanuel of the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, Wyo. Emanuel said the difference was more pronounced in the more western areas of the NWS Cheyenne office’s coverage area than in the east. While temperatures were warmer than normal in the west, he said the Panhan...

Here is a look back at some of the stories that made news in Cheyenne County during 2015. January Sidney's Wendall Gaston was inducted into the Nebraska Jaycee Hall of Fame in Lincoln. "I've learned a lot of different things from my time with the Jaycees, it's been a very good experience," said Gaston, a former mayor and pharmacist. John Verser, Western Nebraska Observer|Oct 2, 2015

POTTER – Potter-Dix found three different ways to win Thursday night. The Lady Coyotes (12-2) won a nip-and-tuck battle in game one, roared back from a 7-1 deficit in game two and jumped out to the early lead in game three to sweep visiting Creek Valley 25-20, 25-19 and 25-16. Potter-Dix coach Sarah Dvorak said her team started a bit slow, but eventually got rolling by game three. "It took us two full sets to get where we needed to be," she said. Banner County activities director Kari Gifford confirmed this week that the school has canceled the remaining six games on its 2015 schedule. She said the school would see if the program could continue in the future. “We will reevaluate our numbers and our interest level to see if we can try again,” Gifford said. “Due to participation numbers and injuries, we were unable to continue this year.” Banner...

Bierman's latest stop was the duckpin bowling alley in Potter, which means he has now bowled in every bowling alley in Nebraska. "It's been a lot of fun," he said after bowling a couple games last Friday night in Potter. "Wherever we travel, at least the bowling shoes always come with, because it saves us on having to...

The Coyotes (3-5) used a hot start from Cameron Purcell to jump out to the early lead and Trace Sharman had the hot hand after that as they stomped South Platte, 70-46, on Saturday. Sharman led the way with 21 points, while Purcell scored 20.
