Four individuals face sentencing Wednesday morning in Cheyenne District Court, including two Sidney men who have changed pleas to amended drug charges. Leland Blake, 57, and Donald Schlieker, 50, have both entered guilty pleas to. Schlieker originally pleaded not guilty to two Class III felony counts of unlawful delivery of marijuana and Class III possession of a defaced firearm. Blake at first faced two Class II felony charges of delivery of Vicodin (hydrocodone), a DEA Schedule III controlled substance. Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub ha...
It was a time to grip the short bottoms. The uniforms were drenched. The legs were getting heavy from playing a two hour-plus game. And everything showing on the Sutherland gymnasium scoreboard was hardly in its favor. Even so, the Leyton High School boys’ basketball team is heading back to the state tournament. The long drive back to Cheyenne County Tuesday night had me drawing comparisons with what I had just witnessed: Gary Oltmann’s team refusing to lose in taking a 74-68 tri...
Though realizing both sides need a bit more time to finish their respective depositions, Cheyenne County District Judge Derek Weimer this morning set June 17 as the start of what looks to be a week-long trial in the child-abuse case against Nancy Gipfert. “I have a myriad of trail dates in the summer,” Weimer told the court. “This needs to get to trial.” Gipfert, 55, Sidney, is charged with one count of Class II felony intentional child abuse. Her attorney, Donald Miller, requested a continu...
SUTHERLAND — Brennen Cruise stood in front of his team’s bench Tuesday night, his maroon uniform drenched in sweat from a long, difficult night of playing basketball. “We were in deep trouble,” the junior center said. “This was the hardest game I ever played in, and it didn’t look good.” But appearances can be deceiving, particularly when heart and desire are involved. Twice, Cruise and his Leyton High School boys basketball teammates stared the brink of elimination dead in the eye, using a...
SCOTTSBLUFF — It didn’t take long for Sidney High School boys’ basketball coach Erik Kohl to realize what his team was in for at Monday’s District B-6 semifinals against McCook. “On our first possession, we ran an offensive set that had been good for us all season,” Kohl said. “We typically have up to six looks on it. Tonight, we had none, and I turned to our assistants and said, ‘It might be a long night for us.’” And a long evening it was: Sidney struggled to score all evening, and the Bison p...
For both Leyton and Potter-Dix, it’s apparently win or go home this evening in their respective Class D District finals. In Class D2-6, Leyton’s Warriors will carry a 20-1 record into the Sutherland finals against Sandhills/Thedford (22-4), while Potter-Dix (9-13) has the rugged task of taking on top-ranked Paxton (24-0) in the Creek Valley D1-6 finals in Chappell. LEYTON ON EDGE During volleyball season, LHS caught a break after being upset in the District finals, earning a wild-card bid. Tha...
Cheyenne County Community Center is sponsoring a youth basketball tournament this weekend, with 58 teams from the Tri-State area taking part. Boys and girls in grades 5 through 8 will participate in the event, which began Friday night and will run through the championship rounds Sunday evening. Approximately 136 games will be played in the two and a half day tourney, with games being played in five facilities in Sidney: West Elementary, Sidney Middle School, Sidney High School, St. Patrick’s Church and at CCCC. Teams from northern Colorado, t...
A Wednesday traffic stop resulted in the arrest of two Colorado individuals on felony drug and weapons charges in Deuel County. Adam Tuttle, 24, and Laura Goldmann, 23, no address listed, have already appeared for presentment on four charges each: Class II felony possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and Class II possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, along with two Class IV counts of possession of a controlled substance, more than a pound; and possession of a...
SCOTTSBLUFF — Sidney High School girls’ basketball coach Tyler Shaw sat solemnly on the bleachers late Thursday evening at Western Nebraska Community College, perhaps trying to replay two or three situations that ended with the Lady Raiders playing for tonight’s Scottsbluff B-6 District championship. But it’s likely that in each scenario, the thoughts simply bounced off, like so many shots did in a mind-blowing, 37-35 semifinal upset loss to Gering. Even though his team’s defense literally...
Down eight points late to Creek Valley in Monday night’s opening-round, the Potter-Dix High School boys’ basketball team probably couldn’t dream the position it is in today. However, Chad Miller’s upstart and fourth-seeded Coyotes completed a sweep at the Sidney D1-12 Subdistrict Thursday by rallying past Crawford 49-44 at Cabela’s Athletic Facility. Bryan Knigge scored six straight points to give P-D (9-13) a 43-42 lead with about a minute left, and the Coyotes were able to hang on at the fo...
MITCHELL — While worrying about wild-card point possibilities and the like is all good and fine, Leyton High School boys basketball coach Gary Oltmann would just as soon keep winning — those kind of things have a way of taking care of themselves. The Warriors (20-1) on Thursday night completed their mockery of the Mitchell D2-12 Sub-district with an easy 62-33 win against Sioux County. “I’ll put the sign up tomorrow that we’re in the Sweet Sixteen,” Oltmann said. “If this were the NCAA tournamen...
LINCOLN — Nearly two dozen Cheyenne County high school students were recognized recently as earning Academic All-State honors for the fall season by the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA). Since 2006, the NSAA’s awards program — presented in conjunction with the Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association (NCPA) — has recognized students who meet the criteria for nomination (individual academic excellence, leadership and significant contributions in their NSAA activity) by their s...
MITCHELL — Leyton boys basketball coach Gary Oltmann wasn’t in the mood for horsing around Tuesday night in his team’s post-season opener. Coming out in a full-court press against Banner County, the top-seeded and once-beaten Warriors steamrolled the Wildcats with a 30-2 start, en route to a 65-34 romp in the Mitchell D2-12 semifinals. “We haven’t come right out and started with a press,” Oltmann said. “From the tip, we ran and jumped at them, playing them a man the entire court.” Junior Dylan Brenner and senior Sam Schumacher were big benefi...
What has gotten into the Potter-Dix boys basketball team during this week’s Sidney D1-12 Subdistrict tournament? According to Coyotes coach Chad Miller, the answer is as simple as the shot chart. “Lately, we’ve been getting good shots, but they haven’t been dropping,” Miller said Tuesday night after his fourth-seeded club pulled a mild 62-47 semifinal upset of No. 1 seed Minatare inside Cabela’s Athletic Facility. “We’ve been shooting like 33 percent. Tonight we took care of the basketball, and...
OMAHA — Taking the toughest road, Sidney High School senior 195-pound wrestler Tanner Wintholz emerged Saturday morning with a third-place medal at the Class B state finals inside Omaha’s CenturyLink Center. After losing 4-1 in the opening round to eventual Class B champion, Eric Engler of Beatrice, Wintholz needed to win five consecutive bouts in the wrestlebacks to earn his spot on the podium. “He took the difficult route,” Red Raiders coach John Ganser said. “He came all the way back afte...
Not much was going Potter-Dix’s way offensively in the late stages of Monday night’s Sidney D1-12 Subdistrict opener, so the Coyotes turned to defense in an effort to change their fate. Trailing MAC rival Creek Valley by eight points with four minutes remaining, P-D turned up the heat, forced turnovers and used Luke Johnson’s three-point play to snag a pulsating 43-42 victory against the Storm at Cabela’s Athletic Facility. “In the third quarter, we were missing short jumpers,” Coyotes coach Chad Miller said. “We had to do something els...
Perhaps among a few fans, some doubts were cast about Lane Harvey’s ability to deliver in the clutch. Not any more. The Sidney High School sophomore point guard, with time ticking down — and his Raiders trailing Alliance by a pair of points late Friday night at Cabela’s Athletic Facility — was fouled while launching a 3-point attempt in front of the SHS bench. With .9 seconds remaining, Harvey went to the line and buried all three shots, enabling Erik Kohl’s club to eke out a 61-60 victory a...
OMAHA — Sidney senior 195-pounder Tanner Wintholz is the lone Red Raider remaining in the state wrestling finals at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center. Wintholz won both three bouts in today’s wrestlebacks, while both Scott Kelsey (220) and Michael Muggli (132) were eliminated. Wintholz (21-4) pinned Schuyler’s Tyler Brabec in his first-round consolation bout, getting the stick in the final seconds of the second period. Wintholz then came back and decisioned Nate Meier of Pierce, 5-2, earning a berth in the quarterfinals opposite Alliance freshma...
Even though his team wasn’t setting the world on fire at the free-throw line, Sidney High School girls basketball coach Tyler Shaw had to appreciate how they were getting there. Despite making a deplorable 10 of 27 foul shots, the Lady Raiders (16-6) closed out the regular season with a 56-50 victory against Alliance (10-11) at Cabela’s Athletic Facility. Sidney ran off a 9-2 run midway through the fourth period to settle an issue that probably dragged on for way too long, considering SHS...
OMAHA — Sidney High School’s wrestlers will have the long route today in attempting to reach Saturday’s state finals medal round at CenturyLink Center. Red Raiders sophomore 132-pounder Michael Muggli, and two seniors, Tanner Wintholz (195) and Scott Kelsey (220) will all have wrestlebacks today after losing bouts Thursday. Muggli (28-9), however, is in slightly better position, as he won his first-round bout — an 11-2 major decision against Noah Lau of Northwest — before falling in the quart...
When senior standout Rylee Hanks is in a groove, the Crawford Lady Rams usually have enough to get by. Yet it’s a totally different ballgame when her teammates get involved, as the Creek Valley Lady Storm learned during Thursday night’s Sidney D1-12 Subdistrict at Cabela’s Athletic Facility. Hanks managed her 30 points, but it was freshman center Kaitlin Rudloff’s 13 points and nine rebounds that provided further damage in a 60-44 Crawford victory. “We struggled when we were a one-perso...
Creek Valley High School’s girls’ basketball team has apparently found a home away from home, as in Sidney. After winning last month’s Minuteman Activities Conference championship on the Sidney Middle School floor, Bill Wilber’s Lady Storm were back at it again Tuesday night. Pulling off a mild postseason upset, Creek held off rival Potter-Dix, 49-46, in the Sidney D1-12 Subdistrict semifinal at Cabela’s Athletic Facility. “I guess we do like it here, don’t we?” Wilber cracked. Shaking off an...
Sidney wrestling coach John Ganser will take some company with him this weekend to the state finals in Omaha, but he came really close to needing a bigger vehicle. Advancing three qualifiers from their own Class B-4 District held at Cabela’s Athletic Facility, the Raiders darned-near had all but one of their entries reach the final round. Senior Tanner Wintholz (195 pounds) and sophomore Michael Muggli (132) repeated as state qualifiers for the Red Raiders, and senior 220-pounder Scott Kelsey a...
MITCHELL – Draining eight 3-pointers, the Sidney High School girls basketball team improved to 15-6 with a 69-44 victory Saturday afternoon at Mitchell. Sarah Mahr dropped three treys and scored a team-high 14 points for the Lady Raiders, who grabbed a 19-7 lead after a quarter, and never let up. SHS pushed the advantage to 31-15 at halftime and 51-29 heading into the final period. Karissa Segelke added 13 points, Morgan Linneman nine and Katelin Cole eight for Sidney. Mahr hit three 3...
MITCHELL – Sidney High School’s boys basketball team gave up a few big shots early Saturday afternoon at Mitchell, but as the game progressed, the Raiders hit several themselves. Nailing nine 3-point shots and improving defensively over the final three periods, Erik Kohl’s Raiders improved to 14-7 with an easy 74-42 win. “Mitchell hit us in the mouth early,” Kohl said. “They hit some big shots in the first quarter, but as the game went along we got better. We set a goal of multiple quarters of a...
