  • Cabela’s Holiday Shootout

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Jan 2, 2013

As long as Sidney High School boys basketball coach Erik Kohl can figure his own team out, the Red Raiders are likely to put up more struggles. “Right now, if I am coaching against us, I’d play a zone against us,” Kohl said after watching his club fall 52-49 to Gering in Saturday afternoon’s third-place game in the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout. “We are going to have to keep guys in the gym later than they have been recently in practice.” In dropping successive games to close out their own hol...

  • Lady Raiders run past Cheyenne South

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 29, 2012

While its offense wasn’t clicking on all cylinders, the Sidney High School girls’ basketball team made sure that Cheyenne South could hardly get the ignition to turn. Playing near shutout basketball in the first half, Tyler Shaw’s club didn’t get one phase of its game to complement the other until midway through the fourth quarter of a 37-15 semifinal victory Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout. Sidney (7-1) will meet 10-0 and unbeaten Douglas (Wyo.) at 1:30 p.m.... Full story

  • Raiders tripped up in OT

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 29, 2012

Currently, Sidney High School’s boys basketball team and overtime games are anything but bedfellows. Friday night, the host Red Raiders fell prey once more to the extra session, dropping a 60-58 decision to Cheyenne (Wyo.) South in the second semifinal of the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout. South’s Mark DeBruyn, after coming up short on two potential game-clinching shots in regulation, sank a three-point play on an inbounds pass with 10.8 seconds remaining to account for the game’s last points....

  • Raiders’ defense rises to occasion

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 28, 2012

In the early going of Thursday night’s Cabela’s Holiday Shootout matchup with host Sidney, Gothenburg’s boys basketball team succeeded in playing to its strengths, building a 17-9 lead behind the inside play of 6-foot-8 sophomore Tanner Borchardt. That’s when the host Red Raiders began doing what they do well — knocking down 3-point shots and using their defense to jump-start the transition game. SHS quickly erased the deficit and gradually pulled away to a 58-49 victory. Erik Kohl’s cl...

  • Lady Raiders hold off Swedes

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 28, 2012

Karissa Segelke and Kylee Price provided the offensive lift, and the Sidney High School Lady Raiders’ defense held up just enough to frustrate Brittyn Munster in the final seconds in holding on for a 46-43 win Thursday evening against Gothenburg in the opening round of the Cabela’s Holiday Shootout. Segelke and Price combined for 20 of SHS’s 27 second-half points, and Tyler Shaw’s club improved to 6-1 by using a 6-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to reverse a 36-34 Swedes lead. Segelke... Full story

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 18, 2012

The legal wheels are grinding once again in the The City of Sidney’s property nuisance abatement case against Marvin O. Filsinger of Filsinger Excavating and Filsinger Emergency Services. The city on Monday filed a motion to abate public nuisances before Cheyenne County District Judge Derek Weimer. The motion, filed by Fort Collins (Colo.) attorney Charlie Cuypers and Sidney City Attorney J Leef, alleges Filsinger has not complied with the Judgment ordered by Weimer on March 15, and the city is seeking to enter the property south of the C... Full story

  • Prep Roundup: Warriors pick up big road win

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 18, 2012

HEMINGFORD – Leyton High School’s boys basketball team had to wait a year for its chance, but the Warriors didn’t waste the opportunity Saturday night to atone for last year’s triple-overtime home loss to Hemingford. Holding a five-point halftime lead, Gary Oltmann’s team ratcheted its defense in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 22-11 in the second half of a key 50-34 nonconference road matchup. The victory raised LHS’s mark to 6-0. “We got our revenge,” Oltmann said. “We held onto our appointment with them, and this game has been on...

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 18, 2012

Powerful Lexington took home the team title, while the host Sidney High School wrestling team finished third in the team standing at Saturday’s Red Raiders Invitational. “I think if we’d had finished a bit stronger we might have moved up a notch,” SHS coach John Ganser said, “but no question, Lexington was the class of the field.” Lexington (128 points) outdistanced Cozad and SHS (79.5 and 68 points, respectively) in the nine-school field. Sidney finished with nine medal winners, including t... Full story

  • Lady Raiders manage to slip past Alliance

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 14, 2012

ALLIANCE — Even when things were falling apart Thursday night, the Sidney High School Lady Raiders didn’t lose sight of two key marching orders: keep playing defense, and whenever possible, get the ball to the best option. SHS followed those rules to the very end, and for that, was able to escape Alliance with a 32-31 Western Conference win. Finding every which way to lose a double-digit lead — be it through poor foul shooting or sloppy ball-handling — the Raiders (4-1, 1-0) got out of town with a victory when Madi Malzahn intercepted a Lady...

  • Second-half defense sparks Raiders to victory

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 14, 2012

ALLIANCE — A little persistence goes a long way. Just ask Sidney High School’s boys basketball team. With its offense struggling to reach halftime Thursday night, the Red Raiders used their defense to keep host Alliance in check at intermission by way of a 19-17 deficit. In the third period, Erik Kohl’s club put everything together en route to a 45-36 Western Conference road victory. Ignited by pressure defense and a rapid-fire transition game, Sidney (3-2, 1-1) wiped out a six-point Bulldogs lead by going on a 19-3 run to close out the quarter...

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 14, 2012

OSHKOSH — Tanner Wernsman and Nathaniel Vortuba were double-winners on the mats Thursday night as Sidney High School’s wrestling team swept a triangular match against both Hershey and host Garden County. Wernsman opened the Red Raiders’ 65-12 win over the host Bulldogs by picking up a quick pin at 160 pounds, and also won by a first-period stick in his bout against Hershey’s Wyatt McConnell. Picking up pins against Garden County were Tucker Wintholz (heavyweight) and Lane Riley (145). Vortuba (138) won by technical fall, and the remaind...

  • Travel always an issue in Panhandle prep hoops coverage

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 13, 2012

It seems like it was just yesterday that I first stepped into these offices and began my beat on the news side. Today, I find myself at the sports desk, while still keeping an eye on certain items on the news beat. Whereas I parachuted into this slot at the end of our fall sports coverage, winter sports season — always a busy time — has arrived. And after a few weeks at it here, I have determined with certainty that basketball is a much different beat than I have previously experienced. Bac...

  • P-D girls grab late lead, fend off Leyton charge

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 12, 2012

POTTER — So, if the shots aren’t dropping for you, what is left to do, if you’re Conner Wolff? Keep shooting. Wolff, while bobbling an entry pass, hit a short jump shot off the right side that gave the Potter-Dix girls basketball team the lead for good Tuesday night in a 39-37 victory against visiting Cheyenne County neighbor Leyton. Wolff’s basket, coupled with three key defensive plays and an additional free throw from her sister Morgan, settled an issue that had four ties and eight lead ch... Full story

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 12, 2012

POTTER — For about 10 minutes of playing time Tuesday evening, Potter-Dix High School’s boys basketball team hung around with visiting Cheyenne County rival Leyton. That’s when Sam Schumacher got into the act, and it was lights out for the Coyotes. Schumacher, held scoreless for the first quarter, buried a 3-point basket from the right wing early in the second period, igniting a 40-7 run that propelled the Warriors (4-0, 2-0) to an easy 69-32 Minuteman Activities Conference road victory. • Creek Valley, Potter-Dix hoops endure a troubled Saturday night

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 11, 2012

Saturday evening was none too kind to the Creek Valley and Potter-Dix high school’s basketball programs, whose boys and girls were swept by Caliche (Colo.) and Paxton, respectively. TIGERS TOO STRONG FOR COYOTES Paxton proved too tough a visitor for P-D, winning the girls contest, 58-27, and then handing the boys a 90-34 thumping. Conner Wolff managed a team-high 16 points for the Potter-Dix girls’ squad, but Paxton rolled to an easy victory on the strength of 17 points from Brekkan Martinosky. Emma Holz added 13 points and Taylor Hol...

  • East Sidney Expansion consultants address concerns

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 7, 2012

With two days of open-house feedback under their belts, East Sidney Expansion Project officials wrapped up the first round of public input with a 90-minute formal presentation Thursday evening at Cheyenne County Community Center. “This is a very complicated project,” said Jeff Winston, master plan consultant of MIG/Winston. “It’s easy to build a home, but it’s more difficult to create a neighborhood.” MIG/Winston is part of the consulting team put in place by Cabela’s, which on Nov. 19 announced...

  • Segelke to sign dual-sport letter with Concordia today

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 6, 2012

No need to be decisive if you’re Karissa Segelke. Segelke, a three-sport standout in the Sidney High School Lady Raiders’ athletics program, was looking to continue her basketball and track careers — she also starred on SHS’s Final Four volleyball squad — at the college level. When the dust finally settled, Segelke settled on the best of both worlds. This afternoon, the SHS senior is set to ink a national letter-of-intent to attend Concordia University in Seward, as a member of the Bulldogs women’s basketball and outdoor track programs. ... Full story

  • Things went a-foul Friday night in Potter

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 5, 2012

Other than the obvious task of it being my personal assignment, there had to be some other rhyme or reason for what transpired Friday evening in Potter. In a contest that dragged on for what seemed like forever (actually, it was pretty darned close to two hours), the Potter-Dix girls opened their season with a 55-47 victory against visiting Sedgwick County, (Colo.). But for now, we can set the score aside, because a quick peek inside the numbers reveals that those in attendance were sitting in... Full story

  • One crazy game: fouls, free throws

    John Roark, Sun-Telegraph|Dec 1, 2012

POTTER – It certainly won’t go down as a thing of beauty, but Potter-Dix High School’s girls basketball team will take it. In a lengthy, rugged and sloppily-played affair, the Coyotes broke away from a halftime tie with a 17-2 third-quarter run, then almost squandered it in a 55-47 victory against Sedgwick County that will be better remembered for its futilities than anything else. The teams combined to foul 71 times, and what’s more, the Coyotes and Cougars combined to shoot 105 free throws,... Full story
