    Hank Bond, Sun-Telegraph|Feb 13, 2013

Just short of his second anniversary as Sidney Police Chief, David M. “Mike” Brown has submitted his resignation to Sidney City Council. He stood before the governing body to offer his official notice of leave at the Tuesday city council meeting, citing family health issues. “Family members of both me and my wife have some long-term health issues and it’s just something that had to be done.” With both families out of the state of Nebraska, Chief Brown said family, “just comes first for me and...

Accountability and risk. There was a time in the late 1960s or early 1970s when Lyndon Johnson put his presidency on the line with the civil rights movement. His advisors and many from his political party felt he shouldn’t do that and the president, being as he was – Texan and unafraid said, “Well what’s the presidency for if you can’t put it on the line? – to make people’s lives better, to improve their station and to provide opportunity.” This, in my opinion, is the way it should be about anything. If you take a political office or if you are...

Running a daily newspaper, or any newspaper for that matter, offers opportunities that make the job very enjoyable. It also enhances, or at least it has mine, the number of experiences I can count in my life. Thursday night here in Sidney I had the pleasure of attending the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet. The rewards were many – as I was able to see the smiles, hugs and handshakes as guests arrived – and I was joined by four staff members here at the table and for the evening. I watched intently as the mc for the night...

    Hank Bond, Sun-Telegraph|Jan 26, 2013

Members and guests of the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Sidney Holiday Inn last Thursday to celebrate a year past filled with memories and to honor members for their contributions and accomplishments to the organization. The banquet room was filled as the Holiday Inn staff served a catered meal for the event. The invocation was offered by Pastor Doug Birky. The master of ceremonies was Hunter Arterburn. United States Congressman Adrian Smith offered remarks on his beliefs...

Sometimes you can’t help but wonder about the media – main stream, bloggers, radical – you take your pick. I can’t help but quit thinking about the overwhelming media coverage of a couple things in the past few weeks. I’d have to go back first to the media fumbling of the ball on the Newtown, Conn., shooting. From the very first reporters on the ground to the final piece filed from that death scene the media continuously fumbled the ball . . . and the facts. I was in my recliner when the first news scrolled across the bottom of the televisio...

Attention Doom-sayers – the newspaper industry is not dead. Kevin Slimp our guest editorialist to the right in today’s edition of the Sun-Telegraph goes to great lengths to point out that his personal experience and research affirm my claim. He got terribly upsent with a television news segment dedicated to spewing this opinionated rubbish on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Let’s take a look. When radio first emitted its first signal there came a speech from the mountain top that the newspaper industry would die out. There would be no more print: No more page...

There’s nothing like looking in the eyes of young people on Christmas morning. This year, while I didn’t get to be where my children and grandchildren were I did get the opportunity to watch Christmas package opening opportunities via Skype on the Internet. Skype for those who may now know allows use of a web-cam or video camera and can be seen by the other party wherever they may be. I had grandchildren in eastern Kentucky and in Nevada – and I was able to watch the proceedings. The beauty of it is getting to watch the faces of those young boy...

Traditions. In life there are things which generate traditions. Sometimes it is birthday tradition or maybe even each holiday will have family traditional holidays. I can say when I was younger even my microscopic family had holiday traditions. The two largest at our house were Thanksgiving and Easter. Christmas, when I was a child, was not a big deal as I had to go off to another town each holiday. When my wife Marilyn and I married Christmas became an important element of our lives. From that very first Christmas when Carol had just come...

A tragedy. People in the media wonder why the general public has no trust in them or on an even broader scale a disdain for the media in general. I’d like to take a few lines of this column, which is running on a day I usually do not include a column, to say that the radio people from Australia who phoned Kate’s hospital room pretending to be the Queen checking on her granddaughter should be humiliated and ashamed. First I want to clearly say there was nothing about this that passed for entertainment or even fair-minded journalism. I ack...

Aggressive. First. Accurate. Followed by honesty and integrity. These three words sum up the editorial mission of The Sidney Sun-Telegraph. As a small town, daily newspaper it is always our mission to gather news in a responsible manner. First, being aggressive allows a certain amount of esteem to be latched onto our journalistic pursuits. It’s essential that those reporting for our newspaper, editing copy, or preparing the printed pages through design apply specific principals in the field of journalism. I have learned over the years to study...
