  • Memorial Day services to honor fallen

    Don Ogle|May 26, 2017

This weekend officially kicks off the summer season for many, but Monday, the “end” of the holiday weekend, holds the key to this important national holiday. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor fallen soldiers. It was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Rep...

Through that season the Raiders won six meets, plus the Western Conference and District team titles. "The kids have a lot to be proud of," Christiansen said. Don Ogle|May 24, 2017

More than 50 local athletes made appearances in state track competitions over the weekend, braving cold wet conditions as they took their places among their states' elite. Out of that mix, more than two dozen medals came back to the area, 14 of them in individual competition. Leading the way for local athletes was Sidney High School freshman MJ Johnstone, who made her mark as one of the state's best by winning the Nebraska Class B girls pole vault title. Johnstone went without a miss through...

  • Raiders golfers qualify for state

    Don Ogle|May 17, 2017

Sidney High School golfers have been running on a hot streak through their final meets, handily taking care of challengers going into district competition. That streak continued into Monday's district play, where the Raiders shot a team 316 to qualify for state the second year in a row as a team. Connor Dormann led all golfers into the clubhouse, his 75 good enough to edge Scottslbuff's Gabe Patton (76) and temmate Nate Dvorak (77). Also medaling for the Raiders was Drake DeMasters, who...

  • A shot to remember

    Don Ogle|May 12, 2017

A Sidney golfer carded a links dream last week, shooting his first hole-in-one at Sidney's Hillside Golf Course. In making his historical shot, Carlos Flores hit a six iron just right, bouncing his ball in on Hillside's 145-yard par three 14th hole. "I've been waiting for that for a long time," Flores said. He started playing golf in the late 1980s, and as luck would have it, the man who talked him into trying the game, long-time Sidney coach Dick Yahn, was part of the foursome. Also playing in...

    Don Ogle|Apr 26, 2017

Sidney High School's track teams got a chance to experiment last week at the Scottsbluff Twilight Track Meet, with a number of athletes trying their hands at different events. Through it all, the Raiders found some options as they prepare for upcoming conference and district competitions. "With the weather and the meet schedule, it gave us a chance to do a few things differently," said Sidney Coach John Ganser. Part of the meet's allure is its non-scoring nature, where there are no official...

  • Sidney wins home tourney in playoff

    Don Ogle|Apr 5, 2017

The sun broke through the clouds, giving warmth to the gentle breeze, providing the promise of a nice time for golf. Problem was, that brief window of warmth came after the close of regulation play at the Sidney Invitational Golf Tournament. Prior to that, players fought stiff winds and cold temperatures that placed the wind chill just above freezing for most of the day. "This is the first time I've ever played a whole round wearing a stocking cap," Sidney golfer Elliot Jones said while players...
