In late 1988 and early 1989 a group of Sidney businessmen began to kick around the idea of a large flagpole in Sidney’s Legion Park, with the added potential of a memorial to those who served in conflicts around the world. That idea grew from finding a very large pipe to serve as a flag pole to acceptance of a damaged interstate light pole which now serves as the centerpiece of the Sidney War Memorial. Over time families added to the memorial, which now tells about conflicts the nation’s soldier...

Sidney High School's cross country team has held to the mantra of improving each time they run. They entered the state meet with only continued improvement in mind Saturday, and to let the chips fall where they may. The chips feel very well for the Raiders, with both teams finishing in the top 10. Not a bad run for teams who went from being the largest Class C school to the smallest in Class B. Sidney's girls finished fifth as a team, with two freshman leading the way. Taighlor Arnett crossed...

But that record didn't deter the Lady Raiders as they entered the final, ferociously attacking the Lady Cardinals from the onset, controlling the match from t...

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts returned to Sidney Tuesday, just days after appearing at Sidney’s Oktoberfest to announce Cheyenne County’s Cattle Friendly County designation and participating in the celebration’s opening ceremonies. This visit, however, was more somber, coming the day after it was announced that Missouri-based outdoor retailer, Bass Pro Shops, had made an agreement to purchase competitor Cabela’s, based in Sidney. Since November, when Elliott Management Corp., a New York invest...
Starting tomorrow, a Potter cowboy will enter the rodeo ground at Panguitch, Utah, chasing a long-held dream of becoming a world champion. It's been a long time since Barry Shephard began riding in rodeos. He first began trying to stay atop broncs as a bareback rider, and with a measure of success. At the time, he thought bull riders "were crazy," as they tried to remain aboard one-ton, horned behemoths whose only intent was to rid themselves of the people who dared to climb on their back. But...
