There is something enigmatic about this Nebraska brew. You embrace toasted bread, sweet and almost chocolaty malt, sweetness and something lowdown like chalk on the nose. Yet there’s a subtle bite indicated in there somewhere, akin to pine needles or marinated cherries—it’s difficult to pin down. The flavor is equally involved. Spicy pepper and bitterness prickles your palate and dissipates, leaving a casual, swaggering cocoa powder ease that edges more toward toffee than malted milk. Toasted bread crust comes to mind, as well, before the h...

13 Front St. Potter 308-879-4227 Open: Daily 10 a.m.-late Bag’s is the sort of place every village needs. The corner bar and steakhouse in Potter is dark, sometimes rickety – enough so to send a nervous quiver through the spine of any first time visitor. Yet it is also vibrant and colorful, glowing with local character. More importantly, the narrow kitchen turns out some impressive dishes. Take their farm yard cheeseburger, for example. At a half pound (you can order more petite patties) the...

On Saturday three of us from this office took a side trip to view Lincoln’s stab at assembling the tallest structure ever built from Lincoln Logs. Yeah, we live exciting lives. A team had reconstructed Nebraska’s state capitol with the famed children’s toy, creating a soaring tower some 12 feet high. More than a simple effort to set a Guinness record, the project was billed—in an otherwise tedious address by Lincoln’s mayor—as part of a campaign to emphasize the youthful vigor of the city. Later that evening, we sat with Merle Baranczk, P...

FOOD: Anong’s Thai Cuisine 620 Central Avenue Cheyenne, Wyo. 307-638-8597 Open: Daily 11 a.m.-3 p.m., 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Anong’s Thai Cuisine opened on March 16, and you can tell. Two or three bites into our appetizers, a waitress arrived with the entrees, forcing an untidy moment as several hands shoved plates around the overcrowded table. The intrusion exposed a flaw unfortunately common to new restaurants: service slip ups. Staff members still learning the fine art of expediting often fail to comm...

Kim Jong Un is no fool. Yeah, he looks foolish to the modernized world, strolling with a Napoleonic hand thrust inside his coat or posing at the controls of a Pong-era computer—although, to be honest, I’m pretty much in the same situation when it comes to hardware. Bellicose bluster from a baby faced pudge educated in Switzerland seems comical, at best. And there is that little problem of all out war if he gets a little carried away. But few dictators wield absolute authority these days. They must placate edgy generals, appear heroic to the...

Let’s see … I’m at an age when just lifting myself off the couch can cause injury, my cat keeps strolling across the keyboard and my first day on the job just happened – through no preconceived notion of the bosses, I’m sure – to fall on April Fool’s day. So much for introductions. Over the next few weeks I expect to learn something of this town’s interests, people and streets. Despite my new guy status, however, I’ve already contributed greatly to Sidney’s economy. That’s right, for the past two years I served as editor down the road in Kimb...
