I first heard of O.J. Simpson on television—black and white television, to be precise. During some long ago bowl game, the announcers kept referring to “Old Jay” Simpson, or at least that’s what I heard. I imagined a grizzled veteran named Jay, his hair dusted by age, slipping through the line of scrimmage. College kids looked old to a tyke like me, anyway. His college career was legendary, as was his time in the NFL. But those of us once forced to dial up friends from fixed positions or stop them on street corners to pass along the most re...
The Post 17 Seniors came away from last weekend's Crete tournament with a split. dropping games to Lincoln Lutheran and the home club while beating Rawlins and Pleasant Dale. An ugly final inning tilted the scoreline in SIdney's opener. Lincoln Lutheran padded a 5-0 lead, adding 7 more runs to claim a 12-0 win. Nine Sidney errors did not help matters. Travis Garska took the loss, allowing five runs over six innings of work--only one of which was earned. Post 17 managed only three baserunners. Ga...

Abbi Porter admits she did not expect to earn MVP honors for her efforts in Saturday's West Nebraska All-Star volleyball game. After all, the opposing East team swept the final four sets to claim a convincing 4-1 win. "When I heard them announce 'from Sidney,' I thought 'no way,'" the Raiders standout said. The honor probably should not have come as a big surprise. Porter led the West with 14 kills. She assisted on the final point in her side's opening set 25-20 victory and turned three blocks...
Four yards from pay dirt, a mere 11 seconds remaining on the clock and with the score locked at 19-19, sudden death looming. That was the problem facing the West late on Saturday night as they huddled one last time. Sidney's Logan Lewis had the solution. "I told them to give it to me," he said. "I knew I could score." The Raiders' running back took the ball and sprinted toward the left pylon, outracing three blue-jerseys to break the deadlock and give the West their first win in the West...
Leyton quarterback A.W. Frerichs had one day to spend at home following the West Nebraska All-Star game in Scottsbluff before traveling to Hastings for yet another stellar contest. This time, however, Frerichs will be in a more familiar setting. The graduated senior was named to the Sertoma 8-Man All-Star Football team, which gathered for practice at Hastings College on Monday. The East and West squads will work out through the week in preparation for Saturday’s showcase event. “It’s truly an honor,” Frerichs said. “I like that I get to play o...

Deann Kimble received 36 months of probation and will have to perform 50 hours of community service for her role in the suicide of her husband, Russell Kimble in March of this year. Citing a lack of criminal history and apparent remorse on the part of the defendant, Judge Derek Weimer gave Kimble credit for time served. Kimble, age 53, appeared for sentencing in Cheyenne County District Court on Thursday on an amended charge of assisting suicide, a class four felony. She had originally been arraigned April 8 on one count of assisting suicide...

Eight wrestlers from Alaska--many of them state qualifiers--will train at the school, tour Sidney and shop at the Cabela’s retail store. On Wednesday, June 18, the wrestlers will compete in a dual, featuring Sidney’s Michael Muggli, Kane Taylor, Jack Fedderson and Derek Robb, as well as other area grapplers. The event, set for 7 p.m. at Sidney High School, is open to the public. Afterwards, wrest...

For those privileged to have access to KDUH-TV out of Scottsbluff, John Clanton is the face of panhandle high school sports--and has been since 2001. Each evening during the season he travels the region, shooting footage of everything from football to track before hustling back to the studio to present results on the nightly newscast. His journey began, however, at a television station in Augusta, Georgia--the town in which the Philadelphia-born Clanton grew up. 1. How many games do you see in...

Ogallala might have nightmares about T.J. Garska. If so, they should be forgiven. The Sidney hurler simply overpowered visiting hitters Tuesday night at Legion Park. On his way to a 5-3 complete game win, Garska fanned 14 and walked just one. During one stretch, he struck out five Ogallala batters in a row. "It doesn't matter how hard you throw as long as it's in the zone," he said. In support of that statement, Garska cut the strike zone 68 times-68 strikes compared to 21 balls. He shot down th...
Rumors surfaced that Werner Construction, general contractor for the 10th Avenue improvement project, had abandoned completion after work stopped with the road still unfinished. The reality is less dramatic, according to Sidney Public Services Director John Hehnke. Deficiencies with the installation of the new curb, gutter and pavement caused the delay. "There were voids in the concrete and tears in the surface," Hehnke explained. "The flow line of the gutter wasn't consistent." After...

Big flags are symbolic of one thing, for the most part—used car sales. Just about every large auto dealership across the country unfurls one of those eye catching linens, measuring half a football field or thereabout, waving over a shining sea of polished metal and plastic. Perhaps some of these vehicles are liveried in amber or majestic purple, who knows. Of course, there were large flags of greater consequence. I have no idea exactly when Baltimore seamstress Mary Pickersgill finished the most famous of these. It was 200 years ago and it w...
One play defined Sidney's 12-2 loss at McCook on Sunday. With bases loaded and one out in the bottom half of the third, a low Scott Phillips pitch skipped away from Sidney catcher Kyle Burton. What ensued was an agonizing comedy of errors-three, in fact-that allowed all three McCook base runners to score. "Sloppy," said Post 17 third sacker Bradey Holtz when asked to describe the contest. "We had little small mistakes and big mental errors." Sidney committed seven errors in the final three...
