It startles you the first time. You are driving down Elm St. toward the point where the towering blocks of downtown fizzle to an end when the realization comes. That is the Texas Schoolbook Depository building. That is the Grassy Knoll. This is Dealey Plaza, where the world stopped for a moment, where a new generation was cast adrift, where the imagined America began to unravel. On Nov. 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy—America’s youngest president—was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. It was 50 years ago, yet the sights and sound...

Richard Novak last visited Sidney in the middle of blizzard, one of those blinding, howling Western Nebraska winter days. "I couldn't even see the parking lot," he recalled. Few could-only a handful of people showed up for his recital and disappointed organizers from the High Plains Arts Council suggested they call the whole thing off. But the robust tenor from Texas just shook his head, knowing the show must always go on. "Let's do it," Novak told the group. Someone brought up on the legendary...
The bard himself recognized the massive difficulty of cramming a sprawling tale into narrow confines. Shakespeare's classic "Henry V" opens with a prologue, apologizing for the inability of the author to fit "vastly fields" and large armies onto the stage of his oval theater in London. He added another plea after being forced to crunch years of time "into an hourglass." Writer-director Gavin Hood faced a similar dilemma in bringing the 1985 novel "Ender's Game" to the small screen, in a manner...
With Leyton up 2-0, but struggling badly in the third set, Jodi Craig huddled her team and did what any coach would do: she quoted a t-shirt slogan. The slogan, selected by her seniors before the season began, informs all that good teams can win when they're ahead, great teams can win when they're behind. "I said 'here's your chance to prove you're a great team,'" Craig explained. In brushing past Hay Springs 25-14, 25-16 and 25-21at Bayard Thursday night to earn the D2-6 district title and the...

The funds, raised in part through the company's charity golf tournament, will help cover the enrollment cost for children who otherwise couldn't not afford to participate. There are currently over 200 local students... Full story
Leyton needed only three sets to capture the D2-11 sub district title on Tuesday night. Yet Diedra Waite expressed as much relief as satisfaction. "We knew it would be intense," the sophomore hitter said. The Warriors dropped South Platte for the third time this season, only in this instance by lopsided margins of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-9. But head coach Jodi Craig marveled at her squad's resilience, as if the outcome had been in doubt until the final serve. "We were able to outlast them," she...
Leyton could approach Monday night's sub district opener as if it were a warm up match for the district final to come. The top seeded Warriors dispatched Banner County, winner of three games all season, in three sets. Only in the second did the Wildcats break into double figures, as Leyton tallied scores of 25-8, 25-13 and 25-8. Yet it was hardly the quick, efficient sweep some expected. Banner County took early leads in the first and second sets, thanks to the tricky deliveries of Dalle...

Ethan Nelson was born to sketch and to paint. Well, perhaps not literally-though the Dalton native did win a prize in the Nebraska Fence Post Christmas Art Contest in 2002, when Nelson was just five years old. Meanwhile Charlotte Endorf lives to tell stories from this state's past. Decked in period costume, she often appears before captivated crowds reliving the pioneer days, the travails of those plodding along the Oregon Trail or life in a slumping sod house on the plains. The two talents...

Four minutes of football just before halftime decided Friday night’s rivalry game between Leyton and Potter-Dix. The host Warriors claimed a lopsided win, 50-24, allowing two harmless late scores to narrow final margin. For much of the game, Leyton’s defense showed its stubborn side. Meanwhile A.W. Frerichs pierced the bitter night air for 237 yards passing—Dylan Brenner his favorite target—and Jared Westman pounded out 112 more on the ground. But, as Potter-Dix head coach Dale Frerichs pointed... Full story
At set point in overtime of the finale, after yielding momentum to Chadron in the two previous sets, after watching the visitors take the game to the brink moments earlier, the Red Raiders had one thought on their minds. In the words of Cody Rowley, “We cannot lose this.” Coming off the weekend’s disappointing performance at the conference tournament, Sidney’s thrilling five set win over the 18-1 Cardinals was a lesson in character. After shocking the visitors in the first two, 25-22 and 25-... Full story
What type of government do we want? Smaller? More efficient? Do we even know? One group insists upon slashing federal responsibility to what they presume are akin to Jeffersonian levels. Of course, many in this group revere American troops, while Jefferson was wary of the formation of a U.S. Navy or standing army, considering them potential threats to liberty. The man committed to the idea that all men are created equal held onto his slaves, fearing the loss of his personal economy. Then, one night after reading of the Missouri...
Thirty seconds into Friday night’s confrontation, both visiting South Platte and Potter-Dix had big plays and points on the board. For a moment, it appeared as if the game might turn into one of those freewheeling eight-man affairs. Apart from the first half minute and a one-sided outburst in the second, however, this was a defensive struggle. But the outburst—24 unanswered points for the Knights—settled the matter, as the visitors overwhelmed Potter-Dix, 40-20. “We couldn’t stop them when we ne...
Fierce rivalry, diverse personalities and the sort of danger that causes the average person to burrow into the safety of cubicles and suburban homes—it’s the stuff that ancient storytellers and Hollywood filmmakers feed on. When all of those elements are found in auto racing, however, Hollywood tends to cower from the inherent drama and find only caricature. The film capital has turned the ethos that compels someone to slide behind the wheel of a monster on asphalt into farce, such as “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" or the hilarious “Tall...
It was a night of ups and downs for Potter-Dix. After knocking down Bayard in two sets to open Tuesday night’s triangular at Kimball, the Coyotes fell in three to the hosts—capturing the first in thrilling fashion, slumbering through the next then rebounding to battle the Longhorns deep into the finale. In droll numbers, Potter-Dix beat 25-22, 25-19. In the nightcap, the opened with a 27-25 win, then dropped the last two by scores of 25-10 and 25-21. But the last was a series of almosts, in whi... Congressional approval now sputters at 10 percent or thereabouts. And for reasons particular to American politics, the members of this once august body hardly care. That’s right—grouse all we want, the likes of Boehner, Cantor, Reid, Cruz, Gohmert and Pelosi merely shrug. What this nation thinks of their lack of performance means nothing to those voted into office. Our form of democracy was not supposed to work this way. Although the founding fathers entered into some bitter arguments, they understood that governing bodies exist to resolve disp... Full story
