The whistle was as much a part of Saturday’s game as the jump shot. In the first quarter alone, Leyton and Hemingford combined for 15 fouls, compared to 18 points. Unfortunately for the host Warriors, 14 of those precious points belonged to Hemingford, who handed Leyton a 50-31 loss. “It was their defense,” Dani McKay said, explaining the outcome. “They’re quick and they’re tough.” Quickness was only evident in briefs spurts, however. From the start, infractions set the pace. Less than half a minute from the tip, contact by the Bobcats’ Cali...

As the jackpot for Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing rocketed past the $600 million mark, clerks at local outlets struggled to keep up with demand. "They're going pretty quick," said Billy Steele at Western Convenience. "It's always this busy when the jackpot gets this high." By mid-morning on Tuesday, lottery officials bumped the estimated payoff up to $636 million, the second largest amount in U.S. history and nearing the $656 Mega Millions figure from March of 2012. As a result,...
I don’t know if there’s a scholar out there willing to risk an otherwise stellar academic career by devoting a few months to answer what I consider an important question or not, but I would love to find out (without conducting the research myself) just when lists became an American obsession. Certainly the phenomenon predated the 1977 publication of “The Book of Lists” and David Letterman’s nightly top ten lists that followed. Perhaps it could be traced to the “Hit Parade” and other accounts of the week’s top songs, reaching back to the 194...
The top shooters on both sides were slowed by lingering mid-week illness. And in the back of their minds, players on each team realized that tough opponents waited on Saturday, as well. None of it mattered on Friday night, though, when rivals Creek Valley and Potter-Dix sparred over a grueling, draining 32 minute span. “It’s always fun when these two teams get together,” Coyotes’ guard Bryant Knigge pointed out. “Any game can go either way.” Potter-Dix emerged from the fray with a 60-53 home win. But “frantic” may have been a more appropriat...
On the face of it, Creek Valley cruised to a 61-40 win at Potter-Dix on Friday night. But Storm head coach Bill Wilber saw things differently. "Against Hyannis and Maxwell we ran," he said. "Tonight-I don't know if they were thinking about Caliche." Perhaps the tentative nature he perceived resulted from a flurry of fouls that slowed play. Both teams earned the bonus just a few ticks into the second quarter. Creek Valley went to the line 41 times during the game, while the Coyotes picked up 11...

On Monday afternoon Sidney police recovered the city truck stolen over the weekend. It was located in a pasture near power lines north of town. The 2004 Chevrolet 4x4 with a flatbed was parked next to hay bales and had been disguised. Wind partially uncovered the vehicle. “We suspect the intent was to revisit the truck,” police chief B.J. Wilkinson said. The truck suffered minor cosmetic damage, but was otherwise intact. Police recovered physical evidence and have developed several leads, but the investigation is continuing. City street dep...
Over the weekend, match ups were determined for one of the greatest—or at least the most egalitarian—contests in the world. No, not the NCAA football bowl selection farce. Rather I’m referring to the FA Cup and its all-important third round draw. For those unfamiliar, FA stands for the Football Association, the body governing soccer clubs in England. Most people are familiar with the big name teams, such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. As a United supporter, I cannot bring myself to mention the other Premier League squad...
Creek Valley didn’t need much to outscore Hyannis on Friday night, just two brothers and teammates willing to battle around them. Lane and Brett Godfrey combined for 41 points in the Storm’s 61-28 performance in the season opener. Seven other Creek Valley players scored, as well, while a defense led by Wyatt McMillen held the visitors to single digits in all but one quarter of play. “We’ll take a win any day,” McMillen said. “We got to get experience.” The Storm began the year with no true post up player and just one senior. But that senior—L...
The Storm weathered bouts of sloppy play and unusually timid free throw shooting to claim a 46-41 home win over Hyannis in the season opener on Friday night. “First game,” guard Jerry Straber said with a shrug. “We were getting the mistakes out of the way.” By rights, Creek Valley should have stretched their lead early. But the halftime advantage of 29-24 hid a harrowing tale: visiting Hyannis chalked up more than half of their points from the line, sinking 13 of 18 free throw attempts, compared to just 3 of 12 for the home side. “It was defin...
Come from behind wins are nothing new in high school basketball. The manner in which Saturday night's game changed in Potter-Dix's favor, however, surprised even those involved. Down 10-8 at the start of the second quarter, senior guard Bryant Knigge slapped the ball away from his Banner County counterpart. It shot toward the sideline and might have soared into the front row seats, but a referee's leg intervened. The ball careened back into play-and into the hands of Knigge, who raced all alone...
Girls Basketball Potter-Dix 49 Banner Co. 31 The Coyotes and Wildcats were clenched in a corner like boxers for three of four quarters. That Potter-Dix came away with a comfortable 49-31 home win on Saturday had much to do with a dominant second period performance, their ability to force turnovers and a quick start to the affair. In fact, the Coyotes threatened to turn the contest into a rout from the opening tip. Within seconds of the whistle, Tiffany Lewis drew a foul and hit one of two. Alexu...
Margaritas opened quietly—sort of. On an afternoon in mid-November, management unlocked the doors. They opted against social media buzz. They did not even try for a word of mouth build up. Instead, they simply switched on the sign posted with the neighboring Conoco station. Restaurants like a “soft” opening, giving them precious time to work out any kinks before the crowds arrive. The result in Margaritas case? “Oh, my God,” said manager Juan Alcaraz. “The restaurant was packed. It was impossible to keep up.” Well, they never had to resort to...
Once upon a time the folks at Disney produced timeless classics, enchanting but with a dark edge. Perhaps this is because they could mine a trove of centuries-old tales from the time when a patch of woods concealed mystery and very real dangers, when a step-mother favored her own children while appearing wicked to those of the ex-wife, when the idea that a jealous sorceress might silence those more comely seemed plausible. In a children's film Cruella De Ville-the ultimate baddy-planned to...

Over the weekend Babe Heffron died. No big deal, really. Heffron was 90 years old—the range in which time claims so many people. The shadow moves, as poet Rolf Humphries wrote. Of course, late in life Heffron had advanced from the position of regular old World War Two veteran to something special. He served in the company featured in the HBO mini-series “Band of Brothers.” Following on the heels of “When Trumpets Fade” and “Saving Private Ryan,” it was one of the productions responsible for imposing realism on our normally whitewashed i...

Obviously this is Thanksgiving week. You know and fear the stories: six lane highways running bumper to bumper, even past the mall exits; airport security lines clogged by once-a-year novices clumsily untying shoes or elbowing their way back through the masses to toss a jacket on the conveyor belt; hour long waits to pay for a tin of cranberry sauce as someone up ahead grills the cashier about turkey recipes. AAA Travel Services anticipates that more than 43 million Americans will venture 50 miles or more to gather with family, watch a little...
