  • School board hopes to partner with city to cover projects associated with planned new school

    Dave Faries|Feb 4, 2014

Members of Sidney’s school board approached the city council last week, hoping to share costs on projects associated with the new elementary building, should the measure meet with voter approval. The $16.95 bond issue returns to the ballot as part of the May 13 primaries. The school board hopes to replace three aging elementary buildings—North, South and Central—with a single, modern facility to house a growing K-4 population. Residents previously rejected the proposal by a narrow margin of 105 votes in September of 2013. Should the bond issue...

  • From the editor: On the spot

    Dave Faries|Feb 4, 2014

I love a good television commercial. At their worse, they are filled with braying injury lawyers, used cars and salad spinners. In the hands of a marketing genius, however, these brief video segments tell entire stories in a matter of seconds—a task that would have eluded the great writers of any age. Imagine Shakespeare’s agent insisting he cram Claymation raisins and 60s Motown into a half minute meant to entice average Americans to purchase tiny boxes from Sun-Maid—or whichever brands were based in California. In my memory I hold onto such...

  • Raiders hold edge in defensive struggle

    Dave Faries|Feb 3, 2014

There was little reason to peek at the scoreboard on Saturday. Points, after all, were hard to come by in Sidney's 27-16 win over visiting Hershey. The Raiders held Hershey to a mere two points in the first period. The Panthers returned the favor in the second. And until the game's waning moments, it was doubtful either team would break the 20 point mark. "It was a defensive battle, that's for sure," said Katelin Cole. Sidney's Abbi Porter, Cody Rowley and Savanna Rosenbaum clogged the low post...

  • Students compete for shot at the National Spelling Bee

    Dave Faries|Jan 30, 2014

For the second consecutive year, Sidney's Salena Petluri took top honors in the Cheyenne County Spelling Bee. She will go on to compete in the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha, with a chance to represent Nebraska in the national event. The National Spelling Bee is held in Washington, DC and featured on television. The Cheyenne County event was more low key, yet still intense for the 24 competitors. Students from Sidney--Central, West and the Middle School--Leyton and Potter-Dix earned the right to...

  • Police ruse led to Lenstrom's detainment for bank robbery; FBI requests federal arrest warrant

    Dave Faries|Jan 30, 2014

When Sidney police confronted Janetta Lenstrom last Friday morning after the robbery at Sidney Federal Saving’s & Loan, the Potter resident allegedly “broke down, stating she was either going to kill herself or rob a bank, as it was the only way she could think of to get herself out of her current situation.” Details of the confrontation were made available in an FBI affidavit attached to a criminal complaint filed with the U.S. District Court. Lenstrom was taken into protective custody on Friday. The Sidney Police Department and the Cheye...

  • Lone Survivor (R)

    Dave Faries|Jan 30, 2014

The outcome of “Lone Survivor” is never in doubt. Four U.S. Navy Seals drop into a Taliban stronghold targeting a particular leader. They find themselves surrounded by hundreds of well-armed fighters and, as the title suggests, only one man lives to tell the tale. The film is based on a first-hand account by Marcus Luttrell of a failed mission in Afghanistan, played by a captivating Mark Wahlberg. Director Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) reportedly kept the author and veteran handy during production. Too often, expert advice will bog a s...

  • McLeay learns from Sidney residents on eve of Republican debate

    Dave Faries|Jan 29, 2014

Before heading to Gering for Wednesday night's debate between Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate seat, Bart McLeay did something unusual. Yes, he brought a team to help him prepare for the showcase event. But he also walked around downtown Sidney, poking his head into shops, listening to opinions from the Nebraska panhandle. "I like to believe I'm a good listener," he said. "As a lawyer you have to listen to your client to represent them, to do your job." The comment just may represent...

  • Ten Questions with Jay Ehler, Superintendent, Sidney Public Schools

    Dave Faries|Jan 29, 2014

Jay Ehler has served as a history teacher, a basketball coach and--for six years--principal at Sidney High School. In April of 2012 he accepted the position of Superintendent, stepping down as head coach of the Raiders boys team at the same time. He is thoroughly familiar with life in the Nebraska panhandle. As a student-athlete at Scottsbluff High School, he set a school record scoring 50 points in a basketball game--a mark that still stands. Before coming to Sidney, Ehler taught for the...

  • From the editor: Something so real

    Dave Faries|Jan 28, 2014

This week the National Institutes of Health began infecting volunteers with a mild form of the current flu bug, hoping to discover a more reliable vaccine. Now, most sentient types avoid the potentially deadly virus. They know that even if the microscopic beast doesn’t flatten you for good, it can easily knock you around for a week or so. But these foolhardy volunteers know that at the end of a three week quarantine period, some government clerk will be handing them a check amounting to $3,000. Besides, it’s just a mild form. I’ve survi...

  • Voters to again decide on $16.95 million school bond

    Dave Faries|Jan 27, 2014

Sidney's school board will again bring plans for a new elementary school before voters, hoping for approval of a $16.95 million bond. The measure was previously defeated in a September 2013 special election by just 105 votes. The bond will appear on local ballots as part of the May 13 primaries, with the proposed school to be constructed along Fort Sidney Rd. "While it did get voted down, it's obvious almost half of the voters are for it," Sidney Public Schools superintendent Jay Ehler said....

  • Potter woman identified in attempted bank robbery

    Dave Faries|Jan 27, 2014

The suspect who allegedly attempted to rob a Sidney bank on Friday morning was reported to be a 30-year-old Potter woman. Law enforcement authorities are releasing little detailed information on the incident, but Janetta Lenstrom was reportedly identified as the person taken into protective custody on Friday for the attempted armed robbery of Sidney Federal Savings & Loan, across from the courthouse in downtown Sidney. At least until recently she was employed by Points West Community Bank. According to reports, Lenstrom was taken to a hospital...

  • Law enforcement officials arrest suspect shortly after attempted bank robbery

    Dave Faries|Jan 24, 2014

Sidney police and Cheyenne County sheriff's deputies responded to reports of an attempted bank robbery Friday morning at the Sidney Federal Savings & Loan. Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 9:20 a.m. Two hours later the suspect was reportedly apprehended east of Sidney. The arrest was made without incident. The suspect was said by authorities to be a female. She was apparently armed, carrying a small handgun. Police were not releasing her name or other details of the incident at...

  • Top seeds fall in MAC

    Dave Faries|Jan 24, 2014

Sometimes underdogs don't follow the script. For much of the first half and the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, top seeded Creek Valley held the Warriors at arm's length. But a persistent Leyton picked away until they emerged with a 54-48 win in the second round of the MAC tournament Thursday night at Sidney Middle School. The victory sends Leyton to the championship game on Saturday against Potter-Dix. A Katy Ernest buzzer-beater knotted things at 33-33 heading into the final period....

  • Through the roof

    Dave Faries|Jan 23, 2014

Bits of wood, shingles and other materials tumble as a crew from the Sidney Public Works Department demolishes a house at 706 Elm St. on Thursday morning. The house had been deemed dangerous by the city and proper notification sent to the owners. No improvements to meet safety requirements were made, so the city asked for--and received--a court order to demolish the property after the owners removed their personal belongings....

  • Wolff leads Coyotes to first round win

    Dave Faries|Jan 22, 2014

Almost everyone expected the Coyotes to cruise over 2-11 Banner County in the MAC opener at Potter-Dix on Tuesday. The 46-29 outcome might even suggest it was the anticipated cakewalk. But the game was riddled with moments of doubt for the host side. Led by Taylor Evans and her 11 point second half, the surprising Wildcats closed to within 8 points, 35-27, in the early going of the fourth quarter. The rally came at the 7:14 mark. As the clock ticked down to four minutes remaining, however, the...

  • Potter-Dix rolls over Wildcats

    Dave Faries|Jan 22, 2014

What might have been a battle quickly became a rout. After a minute of sparring on Tuesday night in Potter, Coyotes' guard Bryant Knigge pulled off an acrobatic layup, giving the hosts a 5-4 lead. Trevor Harms followed with a power move from the low post and Cameron Purcell sank an open jumper. Potter-Dix never looked back on their way to a 67-42 pasting of Banner County in the opening round of the MAC tournament. "We need to come out intense," Knigge said. "We did that today." The Coyotes...

  • From the editor: Chosen words

    Dave Faries|Jan 21, 2014

They are just words, assembled and stacked with some sort of purpose in mind. Their power when wielded by the right person, however, turns into something forceful. We know what the likes of Shakespeare, Fitzgerald and the great literary artists could make of words—even if the last time we encountered their work was in high school or while watching a Leonardo Di Caprio film. A couple decades ago, while talking with some of the folks responsible for telling future teachers how to conduct themselves in the classroom and—more importantly—how to en...
