  • Warriors battle, fall short

    Dave Faries|Feb 21, 2014

Six points. The margin of Garden County's 43-37 win over Leyton in Thursday night's sub-district title game represented a gap the Warriors could not span, no matter how much heart, grit and hustle they put into the task. It was a margin the Eagles established in the first half, when they outscored the top seeded Warriors by 5 points in the opening quarter and one more in the second. Otherwise, the two sides matched up evenly, putting up identical numbers after the halftime break. Leyton head...

  • 3 Days to Kill (PG-13)

    Dave Faries|Feb 20, 2014

A father with a particular set of skills. A naive daughter. An assignment in France. It would only seem natural if a scowling Liam Neeson strolled into one of the opening scenes, draped in a black winter coat. But this is not another episode of “Taken.” There is no kidnapping. There is, however, quite a bit of retribution--dished out this time by Kevin Costner, back in a lead role for the first time since ... well, it’s really hard to remember. Costner plays a government hit man looking to get out of the game after decades of slaughter. It’s...

  • Porter signs with Bellevue

    Dave Faries|Feb 20, 2014

Abbi Porter was looking to play volleyball for a small school with a winning tradition. Coming off their seventh consecutive appearance in the NAIA tournament, Bellevue University was looking to reload with a solid young middle hitter. "We knew it was a great fit," said Bellevue head coach Trish Siedlik. Porter signed her letter of intent to attend and play volleyball for the eastern Nebraska school, located outside of Omaha, during a ceremony at Sidney High School on Wednesday. After a...

  • Ten Questions with Ramona Joyce Director of Cheyenne County Visitor's Center

    Dave Faries|Feb 19, 2014

Ramona Joyce has been telling people where to go for nine years. At least that's how long she has served as director of the Cheyenne County Visitor's Center, perched atop the hill across from Cabela's retail store. Although born in Montana and a longtime resident of the Denver area, Joyce considers Sidney home. She moved to town in 1991, after all, and spent many years with Nienhueser Construction before taking over at the visitors center. 1. What question do you hear most often? 'How do I get...

  • Warriors win ugly, head to sub-district finals

    Dave Faries|Feb 19, 2014

The Warriors expected to knock off Banner County-and it showed. On paper, Leyton pounded the Wildcats in the sub-district opener Tuesday night in Gering, coming away with a 44-18 win. But it was hardly their usual sharp performance, at least in the beginning. "We were way too relaxed," senior point guard Kelsey Waite explained. In the first quarter the Warriors failed to take advantage of four Banner County turnovers. When the girls in blue presented them with a traveling turnover, Leyton handed...

  • From the editor: Two men and a day

    Dave Faries|Feb 18, 2014

You know, I’m not even sure if President’s Day comes with a possessive apostrophe. The holiday consolidating the celebration of two American icons born inconveniently in the same month is just that kind of afterthought. Yeah, government employees and school children enjoyed a day off. To the rest of us it was just more of the same. But George Washington and Abraham Lincoln deserve a little more. To be fair, however, we’ve come to treat Washington as a marble man, a founder carved in stone and emblazoned on street signs across the country, devoi...

  • Raiders roll in final home game

    Dave Faries|Feb 17, 2014

Tyler Wintholz and Logan Lewis put an exclamation mark to Sidney’s 54-36 win over Mitchell on Saturday evening. Deep in the fourth quarter, Wintholz took possession on the left wing and waited for developments. Suddenly he lofted the ball across the face of the rim, where Lewis nabbed it mid-air and dropped it for a smoothly executed ally-oop. “We don’t get style points at the post,” Lewis said with a laugh. “I was just hoping he made a good pass and it was on the money.” Despite the margin—and the added flair—the contest at Cabela’s Athlet...

  • Juelfs, Sharman lead Coyotes to win in OT

    Dave Faries|Feb 12, 2014

Over 36 minutes the game tipped and teetered, generally in favor of the home side. But two brief moments, consuming no more than 20 seconds in all, gave visiting Potter-Dix a 41-37 overtime win at Peetz. The first came just before what would normally be the final buzzer. Peetz senior Melissa Schumacher had sliced through the Coyotes defense to give the home side a 37-34 advantage. On the other end of the floor Coyotes long rang specialist Taylor Juelfs found herself confronted by white jersey...

  • Bulldogs overcome Potter-Dix with "controlled chaos"

    Dave Faries|Feb 12, 2014

Tre Lewis referred to the Bulldogs manic press defense as "controlled chaos." In the aftermath of Tuesday night's hard charging 74-63 home win over Potter-Dix his description seemed apt. The visitors led by as much as 14 at times and still held a relatively comfortable 45-37 advantage with five minutes to go in the third period. Four Coyotes-Bryant Knigge, Tyler Magninie, Jake Johnson and Trevor harms were into or on their way toward double-digit scoring. And just after the break, the were able...

  • From the editor: The agony of the feature

    Dave Faries|Feb 11, 2014

I can’t stand the Olympics. Or, to be more precise, I can’t stand Olympic television coverage. The competition can be thrilling. Even the biathalon—that bizarre combination of cross country skiing and target shooting—challenges the fitness, mental focus and skill of athletes involved. But for every minute skis skid through man-made white powder snow, for every gentle shove propelling a curling stone down the ice, viewers must endure long stretches of blather. A study conducted by the Philadelphia Inquirer during the 1992 winter games found t...

  • Raiders win wild one over Scottsbluff

    Dave Faries|Feb 10, 2014

Time slowed agonizingly between the moment Scottsbluff guard Dillon Hernandez pushed off toward the rim and the first hum of the final buzzer. Paxton Ehler erased that second from his mind. "I saw him go up," the Raiders senior recalled, "then I was helping him off the floor." To Tyler Wintholz, that instant brought to mind another buzzer-beating effort. "I was thinking 'not Gering again,'" he said. On Friday night, Gering's Jose Palomo burst Sidney's hopes for a road win by sinking a last...

  • Raiders edge Gering to close out regular season

    Dave Faries|Feb 10, 2014

The Raiders seventh dual win of the year, a 40-36 thriller over visiting Gering, might have seemed improbable at the start. Sidney conceded 12 points to the Bulldogs right off the bat, forfeiting points in the 120 and 126 weight classes, retrieving a handful only when the visitors left 285 open. And they were down in team points 12-8 early on, despite wins by Zach Borges and Michael Muggli. The turning point came when Ryan Nieto battled Gering's Quentin Timblin to a draw after three periods,...

  • Contract awarded for Greenwood Rd. project

    Dave Faries|Feb 6, 2014

The city received two bids for the box culvert project on Greenwood Rd. During last week’s city council meeting the board voted unanimously in favor of the lowest bid. While Infinity Construction submitted at total of $162,561 for the project, Paul Reed Construction & Supply came in significantly higher, with an estimate of $220,284. The figure guiding the city’s decision was in the $181,000 range. Infinity Construction noted that the delivery of steel reinforcement may affect the completion date, planned for the end of March. The time fro...

  • Franklin tops, team second in speech competition

    Dave Faries|Feb 6, 2014

Sidney High School senior Kelsey Franklin took top honors in Persuasive Speaking at the Plainsman Invitational speech competition at Perkins County, on Feb. 1. As a team, Sidney finished second out of 17 school participating, placing ahead of the hosts. Ogallala won the event. Although Franklin brought home the only title, she led a strong contingent of Raiders in the first competition of the year. Five individuals earned medals, as did the Oral Interpretation group and the acting duets. In addition, Thomas Webb was recognized as Top Novice for...

  • The Lego Movie (PG)

    Dave Faries|Feb 6, 2014

A nefarious dictator threatens to enforce his domination over the world and only one man can save the helpless inhabitants. Batman? No, although he is part of the good guy crowd. Superman? Not a chance. The heroes from the “Star Wars” films? They are hardly capable of leading the way. How about a motorcycle enthusiast and revolutionary by the name of Wyldstyle? Her role involves protecting The Special—that is the chosen one’s title—from ill rather than heading the charge. In the brilliant “The Lego Movie,” freedom depends upon a lowly construct...

  • Fatal accident kills panhandle oil man, passenger

    Dave Faries|Feb 5, 2014

Panhandle businessman Bruce Evertson, a prominent figure in the state’s oil industry, was killed in a highway accident on Tuesday along with his passenger, Robin Lapaseotes of Bridgeport. Evertson, CEO of Evertson Companies in Kimball, was behind the wheel of a Cadillac Escalade traveling east on Nebraska Highway 88 in Morrill County. According to the Nebraska State Patrol, he collided head-on with a westbound semitrailer, driven by Dennis Dobrinski of Bridgeport. Dobrinski was taken to Regional West Medical Center with what were described a...

  • City to pay Wheat Belt for power line projects

    Dave Faries|Feb 5, 2014

With east Sidney expansion projects underway, Sidney’s city council reached an agreement with Wheat Belt on the necessary relocation or transfer of electric distribution lines affected by new construction. As part of the plan, the city would compensate Wheat Belt $5,550 for the removal of an overhead line running alongside Ft. Sidney Rd. Wheat Belt would also receive $10,338 to help with the installation of a new underground line. Because city electric will take over some existing Wheat Belt lines, including a joint use line running along T...

  • Ten Questions with Megan Mcgown Community Development Director

    Dave Faries|Feb 5, 2014

Megan McGown seems to be everywhere, from city meetings to events downtown. Sidney's Community Development Director joined city hall after seven years serving as director of the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. Yet her plans entering college were far removed from the world of business recruitment, retention, historic downtown preservation and all the other aspects of her position. No, the sandhills native hoped for a career in law and studied criminal justice. After graduation, however, she...

  • Hospital, Cabela's expansion ready to move forward

    Dave Faries|Feb 4, 2014

The city approved the final plat for both the Cabela’s corporate office expansion and the Sidney Regional Medical Center addition. The yes vote by Sidney’s city council last week allows both projects to move forward to their next phases. Cabela’s plans to grade and develop a 27-acre section adjacent to the company’s current headquarters facility. While work will cover the entire plat, Cabela’s expects to build upon the land as needed. The initial construction will include an office structure and parking, as well as preparation of the remaining...
