  • Ten Questions with Don Ogle, Information & Education Coordinator, South Platte Natural Resources District

    Dave Faries|Mar 13, 2014

Don Ogle started out in the newspaper field, working with the Pine Bluffs Post and the Sidney Sun-Telegraph before moving into public relations. He even served as publicist for an amusement park ride manufacturer in Colorado. Yet he grew up on a farm near Burns, Wyo. and spent summer weekends at Lake McConaughy. Even during his newspaper career he would help out on the land. All of this made his transition to natural resources easy. He has been with South Platte NRD for almost seven years. 1....

  • Beyond the numbers

    Dave Faries|Mar 13, 2014

It might be dangerous to ask Jim Margetts to tap out the “Chicken Dance” on his piano. The non-trumpet half of the band Two Men and a Trumpet played at a German restaurant while in college. Just about every night someone requested the memorable tune. “That would be on my list,” he said when asked about songs that made him cringe. But the list is short. For the most part, Margetts and his trumpet-playing partner Adam Lambert enjoy just about every piece of music written for their instruments. Their concert selection includes classical, jazz—ev...

  • From the editor: Not fighting words

    Dave Faries|Mar 11, 2014

Ah, another ignoble spectacle. On one end, President Barack Obama appears helpless as Russia envelopes the Crimean section of Ukraine, at least to impatient eyes. The volley of words from the White House is reminiscent of Obama’s response to the crisis in Syria, now in its fourth year. On the other a predictable assortment embraces the leadership style of Vladimir Putin, despite its blatant anti-humanitarian, anti-democratic stance. This group consists mostly of knee-jerk opponents of anything Obama. Not that the president’s stern verbal war...

  • Local student wins first place in state essay contest

    Dave Faries|Mar 10, 2014

West Elementary sixth grader Haley Kennedy knows what it must have been like for children living during the American Revolution. For starters, she said, "you would have had to help with the family farm or business and do extra chores." Her essay on the subject, written as part of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution contest, was recently awarded first place in the state. Students taking part in the contest were asked to explore the lives of children during the...

  • Sidney group starts motorcycle ministry

    Dave Faries|Mar 6, 2014

Mark Zalesky loves to ride his motorcycle. He also knows that love can hurt. He spent a year in the hospital recovering from an accident, waiting for a long list of painful injuries to mend. His legs are still held together by metal and he walks with a limp. But the pastor of the First Christian Church in Sidney also believes love can heal. He wanted to ride again. "I said 'God, if you'll get me back on a motorcycle, I'll start up a ministry,'" Zalesky recalled. On March 15, if weather permits,...

  • From the editor: Better here than there

    Dave Faries|Mar 4, 2014

Why would anyone wish to bury themselves—figuratively—in the wilds of western Nebraska? People residing in more sophisticated climes toss around names like Canali, Rocky Patel and Astin Martin. They speak of commuting times and cocktails at happy hour. They attach the same importance to area codes we do to the coveted 39 or 21 license plates. In urban areas they debate such options as Punjabi, Neapolitan or New American for dinner. We savor Bud Light and toss verbal accusations over the choice of Ford over Chevy to haul us there. So why rel...

  • Sidney location named Cabela's Store of the Year

    Dave Faries|Mar 3, 2014

The management team at Cabela’s retail store in Sidney had gathered for a video conference last week. Every store in the chain was connected, hoping to learn which one had earned the coveted Store of the Year Award. But there was a problem. The monitor in Sidney’s conference room had gone blank at the most inopportune time. It didn’t take the team long to go from anxiety to elation. “We looked down the hall and here they came,” said Connie Carrillo, retail marketing manager for the Sidney location. Chief Executive Tommy Millner and a group of... Full story

  • Police investigate alleged drive-by shooting

    Dave Faries|Feb 28, 2014

On Sunday night a Sidney family’s evening was interrupted by an apparent drive-by shooting. Investigators are looking into the incident and tracking down leads, Sidney police chief B.J. Wilkinson said. The alleged shooting occurred on Sunday evening around 8 p.m. Amy Bell was at home with her children when they apparently heard a shot and called police. When officers arrived, they discovered a bullet hole in the window facing 11th Ave. The bullet had continued through to the kitchen wall. No one was hurt in the incident. At press time police w... Full story

  • Leyton plays waiting game to waylay Indians, earn trip to finals

    Dave Faries|Feb 28, 2014

The Warriors began preparing for next week's district finals encounter with Cody-Kilgore moments after the buzzer confirmed their 52-39 win over Minatare on Thursday night, closing out sub-district play. "We practice tomorrow," Alex W. Frerichs said when asked how long he could savor the D2-11 title. Reaching the finals for the third year in a row was not as simple as the score might indicate, however. Leyton led by as much as 15 in the third period, but the Indians began punching back. Over a 1...

  • The Monuments Men (PG-13)

    Dave Faries|Feb 27, 2014

There was once a charming, make-believe world that appeared on screens big and small. Married couples retired to separate beds. Petty troublemakers like Eddie Haskell represented the worst of juvenile delinquency. Family members donned suits or dresses to relax at home. Oh, sure—gritty film noir murder flicks coexisted with this Rockwellesque world. Even in the toughest of these, however, few characters uttered more shocking than the “d” word. This held true even in war movies: bloodless death, aching sentimentality and the occasional “aw,...

  • Ten Questions with Randy Brown, Sports Announcer KSID Radio

    Dave Faries|Feb 26, 2014

Randy Brown is the voice of Sidney High School sports. When the Raiders score a touchdown or hit a three pointer, it is to his cadence. Brown's picturesque calls have earned him both praise and a large following. And he has been at it since 1982, when a friend in broadcasting asked him to help out on the air. The KSID personality grew up on a Sidney area farm. But he is well versed in Red Raiders sports, having participated in football, basketball and track in his high school days. 1. The high...

  • From the editor: The balance of power

    Dave Faries|Feb 25, 2014

So Victor Yanukovych apparently fled into parts unknown, trailed by charges of murder after months of political unrest and popular protest against his regime. In shorthand, the revolt against the Ukrainian president began when his government rejected a potential agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Vladimir Putin’s Russia—notwithstanding Ukraine’s historic distrust of their neighbors, which runs so deep the people welcomed Hitler’s troops as liberators from their envelopment by the old Soviet Union. As a result,...

  • Raiders roll in season finale

    Dave Faries|Feb 24, 2014

From the moment Sarah Mahr took a skip pass from Cody Rowley and converted from three point range to break and 8-8 draw in the first, the outcome was rarely again in serious doubt. Abbi Porter rejected two consecutive Alliance shots, Mahr drained another three and the Raiders were on their way to a 47-36 road win on Friday. In the aftermath, however, the Raiders were in an analytical mood. "We lost focus," Katelin Cole observed. "We need to work on boxing out." Up by as many as 17 points deep...

  • Slow start fails to stop Sidney

    Dave Faries|Feb 24, 2014

Although Sidney handled Alliance in the end, chalking up a runaway 76-62 win on the road Friday night, the hosts dominated in the early going. "They came out and hit us in the mouth," head coach Erik Kohl said. The Raiders were able to put points on the board, but Alliance seemed to score at will. Six different Bulldogs helped the hosts forge a 23-15 lead at the start of the second quarter. But Kohl's crew began to adjust defensively. Sidney closed up passing lanes and shut down fast break...
