  • Cheyenne County corn harvest slowed by weather

    This could be a record year for corn harvest, according to a report from the United States Department of Agriculture. The Nov. 8 report stated that national corn production is up one percent from last month’s forecast and is now predicted at almost 14 billion bushels, which represents a 30 percent increase from last year. If correct, this will mean a record production year for the United States. This would be the highest yield in the U.S since 2009, according to the report.   • Drunk driving numbers concern state, local officials

    Last year alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Nebraska reached the highest total in two decades, according to the state’s 2012 annual traffic crash facts report. This was the only statistic in the report that worried Nebraska Office of Highway Safety administrator, Fred Zwonechek. “The alcohol numbers were a bit disturbing,” he said. In 2012, 43 percent of fatal crashes in the state involved alcohol.   • Downtown display of veterans uniforms serves as a reminder

    Those strolling down Illinois Street enjoying the fine weather last weekend might have noticed military uniforms gracing many of the store windows downtown. These displays, meant to remind citizens to take a moment to think about servicemen and women past and present, are the effort of local man Larry Nelson in conjunction with the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.   • Warren sentenced to prison term for possession, child abuse

    A man who exposed at least one child to illegal drugs was sentenced to 20-60 months in prison on Wednesday for methamphetamine possession and 30-60 months for child abuse. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively. On Sept. 6 Justin Warren, 30, of Kimball pled no contest to possession of methamphetamine, a class IV felony and child abuse, a class IIA felony.     Matthew Emerzian made his first court appearance this week after being arrested by deputies from the Deuel County Sheriff's Office last month for domestic assault, first degree false imprisonment and strangulation which are all felonies as well as carrying a concealed weapon, a misdemeanor.     Theodore Medina, 23, of Sidney was charged last weekend with first degree assault, a felony after an altercation between he and 51-year-old Ernest Ward, also of Sidney. Ward died on Saturday night at Sidney Regional Medical Center. Yesterday, Cheyenne County attorney Paul Schaub filed an additional charge of manslaughter, also a felony, based on what he learned from the preliminary autopsy findings. “My decision to file additional charges was motivated by the added information,” Schaub said.     After much debate over the storage of asphalt millings at Kielian pit last month, the Sidney planning commission issued a conditional use permit last week to Werner Construction to do work out of the pit.     Widespread power outages occurred across an area covered by the Wheat Belt Public Power District on Tuesday.     Although direct sales and firearms sales were somewhat disappointing, Cabela’s still saw revenue increases in the third quarter of this year. Cabela’s boasted a total revenue increase of almost 15 percent to around $850 million during 2013’s third quarter. Retail store revenue increased about 20 percent to around $550 million.     Some damaged city streets will soon received a little face lift. The city received bids for the 2013-2014 crack sealing contract last week. The city budgeted $75,000 for the process this year. Sidney received bid from four companies for the project this year, which is more than the city generally received in the past. Bid prices ranged from 34 cents per foot to 96 cents per foot.
